sick of work

i guess not.... but i'm not a big financial risk-taker - maybe at some point... but if not now, then when

i just think it's pretty funny/depressing that, with the advent of all this technology where we can go whereever/do whatever we want - most people don't leave a 50-mile radius for most of their lives

i'm ready to go do something somewhere (everywhere), but i don't wanna come back to a cardboard box

hence, lotto (too bad they don't even have lotto in this weird-ass state  )

Come to my Seminar

Pay off all you debt, dont have to make a lot to not work. Hell my brother plays poker for a living and does well, over 1 mill cash and has not worked for anyone in 10 years. I wrote him a check and he said "Wow it's already 2006, this was in November". He has no idea what day it is or even year. Not too bad of a life ;)

Reminds me of that scene from Office Space (one of the best all time movies BTW) (moral of the story is at the end of this dialogue):

Peter Gibbons: What would you do if you had a million dollars?
Lawrence: I'll tell you what I'd do, man: two chicks at the same time, man.
Peter Gibbons: That's it? If you had a million dollars, you'd do two chicks at the same time?
Lawrence: Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I were a millionaire I could hook that up, too; 'cause chicks dig dudes with money.
Peter Gibbons: Well, not all chicks.
Lawrence: Well, the type of chicks that'd double up on a dude like me do.
Peter Gibbons: Good point.
Lawrence: Well, what about you now? what would you do?
Peter Gibbons: Besides two chicks at the same time?
Lawrence: Well, yeah.
Peter Gibbons: Nothing.
Lawrence: Nothing, huh?
Peter Gibbons: I would relax... I would sit on my ass all day... I would do nothing.
Lawrence: Well, you don't need a million dollars to do nothing, man. Take a look at my cousin: he's broke, don't do shit.

It's interesting that you say you are sick of work. I'm hearing from more and more friends who are saying the same thing. I think companies are pushing employees to a virtual breaking point recently - which is bad and makes me worry about how bad the recession will between 2009-2011.

I'm feelin this today!

I do know a job that I would like though:

see, that's kind of the problem. i want to do stuff - travel more, for instance. without a job, i can't pay for it. with a job, i can't go anywhere.

i guess this is kind of brought up by being run ragged at work lately.... but then you start thinking about it.... even if you're not working all the time, you ain't goin anywhere in the 16 hours you have before you gotta be at work the next day (or, lately, in my case, the 10-12 hours i have off)

damn, i've only been out of school 2 years - that's not a good sign heh

need to win the lotto:frown:

Join the club. Microsoft is one of the nicer shiters being the masters of window dressing and large cute fonts, but man ...behind the scenes getting shafted still feels the same no matter where you put in your time.

Modern corporate America sucks.

Mega Millions is up to 325 or so this week. I bought $5 worth. I figure if I can take home half that in one lump sum- I can grid last at Monza for several seasons in Formula 1 before being broke again. :frown:

This thread really makes me happy that I don't have a job. Granted I bet I work more hours in a day than most people here but it has never felt like work.

maybe if you just take a massive dump on company time you'll feel better? Just sit there for an hour with the newspaper, dropping a bomb.

Ohh boy. Let me tell you about work...

1) The paid on call staff divert calls to me because they don't feel like dealing with it. I do not get paid for this.
2) Sometimes the above calls come in at absurd times.. Just this morning at 4:30am my phone starts ringing from staff who don't care that I'm not an on call employee. 8 times they phoned. I didn't answer it as at 4:30am when I hear ringing its like vietnam. I now have a sore ear, pulled neck muscle, and very little sleep. Yes, it is that bad.
3) GM subtly blames problems on me, despite the problems having nothing at all to do with me
4) Co-worker who takes one hour lunches and shows up late and does nothing gets pissy because I decide to do some of my own PHP coding on my unpaid lunch break, and proceeds to firewall my connection between our office and my remote server
5) Communication is a joke. If someone thinks I screwed up on something, it spreads like wildfire to every other employee who all offer their own uninformed opinionated theories about what I could be smoking before I show up for work every day... Never does management ask me directly about something I did.
6) I get very little respect. It is a very small company and I am considered somewhat of a senior employee as I fall into the 30% or so of staff who have been there over 2 years. Yet, I have new employees continuously harassing me with "hot sister" remarks, and other such things. They do this because they want to fit in with the other senior guys who like to joke around.
7) Management makes promises to prevent everyone from quitting, and then ignores them when they think everyone has forgotten. Company says they will cover all benefits within 2 months (~6 months ago, I still pay for it). Company says they will provide annual cost of living wage increases (~1.5 years ago, no wage change).

This is quite the rant, but I'm pretty much at the end of the line. Nearly every hour I'm not at work, I'm doing heavy development on a dating site project. The sooner I can get this project up and profitable, the sooner I can punch my co-workers in the face and tell my boss to get bent. I like the company's direction and the work, but seriously there is more drama in this small office than anywhere I've ever seen.

I hear the same, and I experience it first hand too. It's September and I still have over 4 weeks of vacation left. I literally haven't had time to take it. I definitely feel burned out. Not sure how much more I can take, I REALLY need some good time off.

I have a lot of friends who routinely work 10-12 hours a day all week long. It's just too much.

Your comment about the recession is interesting. I think how much free work employers are getting by making salary, non-union employees work too hard and too many hours. If employees stop doing that(because they're burned out, not because they're disgruntled), this illusion of American efficiency will burst.

You guys have to be nuts to have 1 second of vacation time saved up. If I had a job and had anytime saved up to take off I would take it off and build something that would insure I didn't need to go back.

I did have a job once a long time ago and I had no sick time saved up. I called in sick and the person who answerd the phone, the guy who thought he was "the boss" says...you don't have any sick time to take. I said that doesn't change the fact I am sick, and I just hung up the phone. Truth be told I had an offer that day to do a one time project that paid more for the day then the job paid for 2 weeks. It was a no brainer for me. How anyone can work somewhere where you can sit down and figure out just how much you will make 20 years out with your yearly raise is nuts IMO. Especially whenit matter very little if you put in any effort or not. fact is I can not just give a shit about what I do. I have to do what ever I do wide open, full throttle, balls to the wall, and if I am going to put in that kind of effort I better be getting paid for it.

Haha no. That actually reminds me of something else they did... we have a 42" LCD on the wall for network graphs and video cameras, and one day I came in and someone had put up a picture of my sister from her myspace page.

I don't think it would be wise for them to screw with me as I have very intimate knowledge of the network and its weaknesses. Under normal circumstances I would never even make such a threat, but if this continues then I'm sure I would be tempted.

Don't like your job.. spend all the rest of your waking hours figuring out another way to make money. More school. Relocation. A little discipline and a little dedication to improving yourself goes a long way.

It usually comes down to one thing. You are 7X or 8X (or 9X) years old on your death bed realizing you were too afraid to take any real risk to better your situation.

Then it all hits you. You were taking an even more dangerous risk everytime you woke up in the morning complacent. You literally risked everything without even knowing it.

If it makes you feel better most people are this way. Doesn't/wouldn't make me feel any better though.

I quite like my job actually... if I were to be independently wealthy, I wouldn't give a second thought about whether I'd still be there. I'd still go in every day. Here's hoping I get to test that claim someday :).

SteveNY, what do you to make $?

That's a brilliant statement.

I like my job too! That said, I'm currently on a vacation here in Hilton Head Island, SC at a stunningly beautiful resort, with my wonderful wife & daughter. I wouldn't object to being in a financial position where I didn't have to work, but that's not my reality. I'm looking into buying a business with some other folks in order to try to start generating some passive income. We'll see whether it works out that way....
