Reminds me of that scene from Office Space (one of the best all time movies BTW) (moral of the story is at the end of this dialogue):
Peter Gibbons: What would you do if you had a million dollars?
Lawrence: I'll tell you what I'd do, man: two chicks at the same time, man.
Peter Gibbons: That's it? If you had a million dollars, you'd do two chicks at the same time?
Lawrence: Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I were a millionaire I could hook that up, too; 'cause chicks dig dudes with money.
Peter Gibbons: Well, not all chicks.
Lawrence: Well, the type of chicks that'd double up on a dude like me do.
Peter Gibbons: Good point.
Lawrence: Well, what about you now? what would you do?
Peter Gibbons: Besides two chicks at the same time?
Lawrence: Well, yeah.
Peter Gibbons: Nothing.
Lawrence: Nothing, huh?
Peter Gibbons: I would relax... I would sit on my ass all day... I would do nothing.
Lawrence: Well, you don't need a million dollars to do nothing, man. Take a look at my cousin: he's broke, don't do shit.
It's interesting that you say you are sick of work. I'm hearing from more and more friends who are saying the same thing. I think companies are pushing employees to a virtual breaking point recently - which is bad and makes me worry about how bad the recession will between 2009-2011.
need to win the lotto:frown:
Ohh boy. Let me tell you about work...
1) The paid on call staff divert calls to me because they don't feel like dealing with it. I do not get paid for this.
2) Sometimes the above calls come in at absurd times.. Just this morning at 4:30am my phone starts ringing from staff who don't care that I'm not an on call employee. 8 times they phoned. I didn't answer it as at 4:30am when I hear ringing its like vietnam. I now have a sore ear, pulled neck muscle, and very little sleep. Yes, it is that bad.
3) GM subtly blames problems on me, despite the problems having nothing at all to do with me
4) Co-worker who takes one hour lunches and shows up late and does nothing gets pissy because I decide to do some of my own PHP coding on my unpaid lunch break, and proceeds to firewall my connection between our office and my remote server
5) Communication is a joke. If someone thinks I screwed up on something, it spreads like wildfire to every other employee who all offer their own uninformed opinionated theories about what I could be smoking before I show up for work every day... Never does management ask me directly about something I did.
6) I get very little respect. It is a very small company and I am considered somewhat of a senior employee as I fall into the 30% or so of staff who have been there over 2 years. Yet, I have new employees continuously harassing me with "hot sister" remarks, and other such things. They do this because they want to fit in with the other senior guys who like to joke around.
7) Management makes promises to prevent everyone from quitting, and then ignores them when they think everyone has forgotten. Company says they will cover all benefits within 2 months (~6 months ago, I still pay for it). Company says they will provide annual cost of living wage increases (~1.5 years ago, no wage change).
This is quite the rant, but I'm pretty much at the end of the line. Nearly every hour I'm not at work, I'm doing heavy development on a dating site project. The sooner I can get this project up and profitable, the sooner I can punch my co-workers in the face and tell my boss to get bent. I like the company's direction and the work, but seriously there is more drama in this small office than anywhere I've ever seen.

I hear the same, and I experience it first hand too. It's September and I still have over 4 weeks of vacation left. I literally haven't had time to take it. I definitely feel burned out. Not sure how much more I can take, I REALLY need some good time off.
I have a lot of friends who routinely work 10-12 hours a day all week long. It's just too much.
Your comment about the recession is interesting. I think how much free work employers are getting by making salary, non-union employees work too hard and too many hours. If employees stop doing that(because they're burned out, not because they're disgruntled), this illusion of American efficiency will burst.
That really sucks! Got any pictures of the sister?
You guys have to be nuts to have 1 second of vacation time saved up. If I had a job and had anytime saved up to take off I would take it off and build something that would insure I didn't need to go back.
I did have a job once a long time ago and I had no sick time saved up. I called in sick and the person who answerd the phone, the guy who thought he was "the boss" says...you don't have any sick time to take. I said that doesn't change the fact I am sick, and I just hung up the phone. Truth be told I had an offer that day to do a one time project that paid more for the day then the job paid for 2 weeks. It was a no brainer for me. How anyone can work somewhere where you can sit down and figure out just how much you will make 20 years out with your yearly raise is nuts IMO. Especially whenit matter very little if you put in any effort or not. fact is I can not just give a shit about what I do. I have to do what ever I do wide open, full throttle, balls to the wall, and if I am going to put in that kind of effort I better be getting paid for it.

I quite like my job actually... if I were to be independently wealthy, I wouldn't give a second thought about whether I'd still be there. I'd still go in every day. Here's hoping I get to test that claim someday .
