AN Interesting Way for Mounting V1 Remote Display

Bitchin! If that can be done then I might switch to the V1 from my K40.

Was the glass cut or was just the reflective material removed?

It looks like the installer removed the reflective silver coating on the back of the glass and glued the LED in place. I've emailed the guy who posted the thread on Corvette Forum for more info on the installer. We'll see...

I have seen this set-up personally and it is very nice. Only the display is mounted within the rear view mirror, the main unit still needs to be mounted on the windshield.
The ads for it are in the back of some magazines, possibly Autoweek.

Any thoughts as to whether this would work on an NSX? The rearview mirror is a pretty slim simple piece in our cars...

It is very cool!

And I'd be real happy if they made a wireless display unit...

Very clever. You could mount the detector in the rear window like many NSXers do, run the cord through the headliner and into the mirror.

Then all you need is to make a "negative stencil" with cutouts for the detector display elements, strip all the factory reflective coating off, stick the negative stencil on it, and recoat everything else with new silver backing.

It sounds pretty time consuming and having the stencil pre-made would be very helpful but it could probably all be done in a day, or a weekend at worst. If anyone makes a stencil, please scan it! Actually the real key would probably to produce them as static decals to ensure a tight seal, perfect alignment and easy removal.

I'm a little confused about all this radar detector talk. I had one in my 69 Camaro years ago that mounted a sensor in the grill of the car (and one in the back if you wanted to) and there was just a little thin signal giver that got mounted in the interior. It didn't need to be near a window as the sensor did the work. It was wired straight to the fuse box and turned on when the car was started. Don't they still make these kind....??? Then you don't need to worry about seeing it and having some big tacky box on your window. It was a Whistler, I think... If I were going to install a detector, it would definitely be of this type. I know the car is very low but I'd just angle the sensor upward.

Yes, I could run the cord through the headliner. But you couldn't. Neither could anyone else with an NSX-T.

Lud,

I'm confused. Why would you have to strip off all of the reflective coating? Why not just scrape away or otherwise remove the reflective coating in the areas of the stencil?

That's what I have, a K40 located in front and rear. There are 2 leds mounted by the spedo that indicate whether is front or back. Also a speaker for the 2 different bands and 1 for laser. My K40 seems to work really well. So far I've always found the heat before the heat has found me.

Also if the heat pokes his head in I doubt they notice them. In fact when I picked up the car the Lexus dealer didn't even know the radar was there because it was turned off. I found out about them after I happen to come across the previous owner. It took my NSX tech and I a few minutes to locate the sensors with the car on a lift. Turns out they're stuffed up into the bumpers.

Nsxotic - The thing that's nice about this install is 1) it doesn't have that "add on" look you usually get when you mount the remote display unit somewhere and 2) when it's turned off it's basically unnoticable.

nsxtasy - True. On a -T you could run the cable down along the rear firewall, under the carpet and up the A-pillar trim and across to the mirror if you really wanted.

Jimbo - You could do that, but I don't think you'd be able to get all the edges as clean as in the photo (esp. the small circles). I think if you wanted the edges to be that perfect you'd have to strip, mask and re-coat. Just a guess.

I've ordered th Dali V1 mount and plan to mount the main unit there. Isn't the main purpose of the remote unit to remain hidden from view? I thought it was created so cops couldn't see the detector lights while behind you. If you put the remote unit in the mirror, wouldnt that defeat the purpose of it? I was thinking of mounting mine in the ashtray.

I'm guessing that this procedure also requires the disassembly of the remote unit. The dimesions of the remote unit seem to be such that it wouldn't fit in the slim mirror.

Not that this is any big deal but it just may be another aspect of the difficulty aspect and price.

Has anyone seen a V1 butchered to remove the individual sensors so they could be remote-mounted front and rear (like the K40)? (There used to be 3rd party kits for Escorts/Passports and such years ago.) I think the main problem is shielding of the wires.

Reviving an old thread - the link is no longer valid, but did anyone find out more about this?

Any chance one of you still has a picture of it?

Thanks!

I was able to simply use the bracket that is supplied with the v-1 unit its as if it was made to mount between the rear view mirror and top of the windshield. It fits perfectly as far as out of sight security when my tint guy did the windows i had him put in a 6-8 inch limo tint strip across the top of the windshield for 10.00 which IMO is useful and looks great further the tint makes the v-1 stealth.P.S i read in the v-1 instructions DO NOT use any METALIZED tint in line of sight of the v-1 unit it could affect performance.PS the picture posted by the 1st'post is not coming up..
