Apple iPhone officially announced

What is 3G?

I could see them having Office support in the future... even though it's a horrible program. It's the only program that crashes randomly on our mac's at work.

3G (or 3-G) is short for third-generation technology. It is used in the context of mobile phone standards. The services associated with 3G provide the ability to transfer simultaneously both voice data (a telephone call) and non-voice data (such as downloading information, exchanging email, and instant messaging). In marketing 3G services, video telephoney has often been used as the killer application for 3G. Ect.

thanks

i sure wouldnt mind 3G speeds... im typing this now on my laptop which is tethered to my hp 6515 providing my internet connection over GPRS. it's not bad, but could certainly stand to be quicker.

if the above post is correct about no installing software, etc, this thing is a dead product to the market segment it's targeted at... techies. no techie will stand for not being able to install anything on their $500+ uber-phone.

iPhone :

iPhone is first party software ONLY - does not allow software to be installed.
No 3G.
No over the air iTunes Store downloads or WiFi syncing to your host machine.
No expandable memory.
No removable battery.
No Exchange or Office support.
my experience with first-generation products is it's good to keep in mind they're first-generation efforts... there's no doubt in my mind that the iphone will mature to include much of what's considered missing @ this point.

steve's no fool.

No fool is right! The shareholders should erect a bronze statue of of him outside of Apple HQ. It wasn't too long ago that the Apple's performance was absolutely dismal and future extremely bleak. There have been some great turnarounds in the last 5 years, but Apple's turnaround that started about 4 years ago has been one of the most exciting.

As Hal stated, this is a first gen product, which will break new ground, and is great for the industry.

As to some of your points, I say some are positives rather than negatives.

As this is a computer that happens to be a cellphone also, here are some benefrits:

iPhone is first party software ONLY - does not allow software to be installed.
As the phone has to work 100% of the time, allowing user installed software not approved by Apple is risky - ie viruses / spyware could be installed and junk up the phone. Do you really want to be running Anti-Virus / firewall software on your phone 24/7? This would really kill the battery, and slow down performance for the phone and iPod features. I think that not allowing non-Apple approved software to be installed (until it is QA'd by Apple) is a very smart thing to do, until the devices become powerful enough down the road to handle anti-virus / anti-spyware / firewall.
This will be corrected in 2nd gen I'm sure.
No over the air iTunes Store downloads or WiFi syncing to your host machine.
They want you to use iPod to sync the iPhone. Over the air downloads of music via Edge may kill the bandwidth for the phone. This may be rectified once 3G is available.
No expandable memory.
Again - first gen product, may be rectified by 2nd gen or future enhancements. But none of the iPods have expandable memory either, so not sure if this will happen that quickly.
No removable battery.
Hopefully Apple care will handle defective battery better than with the iPod. This is one area where it could be better, but overall I can't complain.
No Exchange or Office support.
It's targeted towards multi-media gadget freeks, not business people. So lack of exchange / office support is not a big deal. This is something of a personal communication device rather than business. I'm sure Microsoft will mimic the idea if it is successful and make a similar device targeting business users.

Overall for a first gen ground breaking product it is incredible. I can overlook some of the faults as it is simply amazing.

Hugh, you need to open up your eyes. Do you always make ridiculous generalizations like that? Then again, you were the one going on about how allofmp3.com passes on royalties to copyright holders

I think you should watch the keynote first so that if you're going to bash it, at least you know what deficiencies it has first. And yes, please go ahead and short it. You were probably one of the people shorting it when it hit its lows earlier this past summer as well. Record breaking revenues on existing product lines, a completely new revenue stream and who knows what else they have up their sleeves. That's ok, it makes it more interesting for me when shorts are forced to cover. (disclosure: I only daytrade AAPL, don't hold a position)

As far as 3G goes .. their initial market is going to be in North America. Why would they offer expensive 3G hardware when NOBODY offers 3G service in NA? Duh. The underlying hardware is all there and to upgrade it to 3G would be fairly straightforward for when they want to move into Europe/Asia/Japan. Their current target is 10M units for the year. That's nothing! They'll sell a lot more than that just in North America, and then they can come out with a separate version for other regions that support UMTS.

Some of the benefits (other than bandwidth) that people often associate with 3G are things like talking/emailing etc at the same time. You can do all that on this phone. All the underlying protocols are packet-based anyways.

The phone is also not slow like GPRS which typically varies from 8k-56k. It comes with EDGE which gives typical rates around 180k/s. Most UMTS (3G) phones give typical rates of around 350k/s, although there are new advances there which can give far higher bandwidth. Anyways, you can't compare EDGE to GPRS -- the experience is like night and day. For example I use my EDGE BlackBerry to connect my laptop (over bluetooth) and can surf the net with very reasonable performance.

As NsXMas pointed out, this phone isn't targetting corporate users (although I think they should!). Anyways, you CAN connect to corporate Exchange servers using IMAP, and it also supports push-IMAP so it can behave like a blackberry. If anything, the full support for HTML/images/richtext in the emails and the larger/higher resolution/denser screen makes it a hell of a lot better for email than the BlackBerry 8700g that I have right now.

As far as sync'ing goes, I suspect that they'll use bluetooth for that. That makes the most sense, especially since Macs have been shipping standard with Bluetooth for a long time now.

With regards to putting your own software on there -- Apple has stated that developers should get in touch with their Developer Relations Team. To me this sounds like they don't want to open up the specs to the whole world, will force developers to sign NDA's, and might even screen the software for quality. I don't think the door for outside development is closed at this point.

The biggest reason that I can see for people not liking this is going to be lack of tactile feedback. They've put in an ingenious multi-touch gesture recognition system into the phone, but only actual use will us how well it works in practice. A lot of the other devices that have gone for full-screen interfaces (eg. Pronto remote) have had the lack of tactile feedback presented as the biggest negative. Then again, they didn't support the kind of gesture recognition this does. Bottom line is that I have yet to use a modern phone that is easy to operate even for the main thing that it's supposed to do which is simply talk. Conferencing, Voice Mail, etc. are all a pain in the ass. It looks like Apple has solved these issues, but only actual use will determine that.

Personally, I can't wait to dump my BlackBerry and get one of these.

Nice looking phone. Love the screen.

It's a shame they put OSX on it though. If it ran a real OS like Windows Mobile, you could have it sync in realtime with your corporate exchange server like blackberry does.

This is a specific area of concern for me as well...

I wonder if it will be addressed?

I said that allofmp3.com pays a licensing fee to the two Russian organizations responsible for collecting licensing fees and submits download information to them. It is up to the artists to contact these agencies and collect their money. The RIAA actively discourages artists from doing so for fear of further legitimizing allofmp3.com. However, Russia being Russia and with the recent WTO negotiations and changes to Russian law, the future of allofmp3.com is up in the air.

Not only is the iPhone a piece of junk the numbnuts at Apple didn't bother checking to see if the "iPhone" name was already trademarked. Silly geeks. Maybe they were too busy playing with that ridiculous TV contraption of theirs that will definitely go the way of WebTV. Right off a cliff! And yes, I was merrily shorting the little piggie today and having fun at the same time. It will go higher, and I will be happy to supply the bagholders.

Read the following:
Cisco sues Apple for iPhone trademark infringement

Right, right. It pays them to agencies that are not authorized by the copyright holders to collect fees on their behalf. Anyways, that's a tangent. Allofmp3.com is going to be going down in flames soon enough.

Actually, if you bothered to look further into this, you would know that they had been in talks with Cisco for a long time on this issue. My guess is that Cisco thought they could take advantage of Apple in this situation and Apple told them to take a hike and decided to take their chances in court. Whether the win or lose the trademark won't impact the popularity and significant revenue stream from this product.

Order them oversea's. I got a razor 2 yrs. before anyone got them here in the U.S. Yes i had it before cingular did. Also, i have something simular to this phone from apple. The motorola A1200 for about 2 yrs now also, shown here. Not available in the U.S.

It has built in F.M. radio, Mine has Navigation, Runs on linux O.S. (not Microsoft i had too many Blue screens w/ that O.S.) OCR basically you can take a picture of a business card and it will sort out all the name, email, fax, phone, and address and store it in your phone book and outlook. It does much more. Basically, looks the same as the apple except it has a clear flip up ear that has the earpiece in it. And yes it's touch screen

How do you figure that when they publicly called this the iPhone without publicly agreeing to Cisco for the use of that name? From what I read the suit was filed DAYS after the release of the 'iPhone' because Cisco assumed that Apple had agreed with their terms but after a few days and nobody from Apple contacting them it became apparent that APPLE wanted to play the court game...

How do you figure that a company that has held the term 'iPhone' for YEARS is taking advantage of the company that just started using it formally a few days ago? Sounds like Apple didn't have all their ducks in a row before launching this and just wanted to rush it in time for their conference without dotting all the I's...

Well considering that they just announced it yesterday, it really hasn't been days since they filed suit, it was one day. It is no secret that Apple has been in negotiation with Cisco for several years since they acquired that trademark and it has now been disclosed that a few weeks prior to release, they were in very close negotiations until they went quiet just prior to the launch.

They did not blindly call this the iPhone and hope that Cisco wouldn't sue them. Given the importance of this product to Apple, it's reasonable to assume that they tried very hard to get this issue behind them prior to launch. When I say that Cisco took advantage of the situation I mean that they clearly had the upper hand, felt that Apple was on the ropes and probably decided to ask for a lot more than Apple was willing to offer. Instead Apple decided that they would take their chances in court since it's a different class of product than Cisco's iPhone.

In the end, whatever the outcome, it won't materially matter to the success of the product IMO.

What day will it break on; first, second, or third? Can I expect the same lack of support I've experienced with my Nano? Will I have to pay another $50 dollars to find a way to recharge it when I don't have a computer just laying around? Will its software try to take over my computer and force itself open every time I plug it in for a stupid recharge?

It seems to me that Apple products are more insidious than the M$ products that they demean. :(

The fact that other smartphones had Microsoft stuff on it made me not buy them. The OSX is the main reason I want this phone.

I almost bought that from overseas a year ago, but was scared of going thru the process... as I know nothing about it.

The A1200 is a nice phone for sure.

:(

you know you can change that under settings, prevent iTunes from auto launching when you plug in your iPod. and how is it taking over your computer? is it loading tons of porn pop ups? gay porn perhaps?

muahahahahahaha.

then they'd have to call it the "ibrick" (good news: the domain name "ibrick" is for sale - i haven't done the trademark search yet ;)

Huh? every phone i have used and my friends too w/ window O.S. blue screens at least once a day or every other day at least. My current phone run's on a linux O.S. works great w/ outlook too and i never had a problem. I am currently going to switch over to all the Powerbook pro's and Mac Pro's for home use since now they can run both O.S. systems at the same time. I'm currently running Dell Precision dual Xeons and its still slow compared to the Powerbook. Honestly most people who use mac's say mac's are better and those who use p.c.'s say p.c.'s are better. Just like photographers who shoot Nikon vs Canons. I also have used both and own a Nikon. But, over the years even Canon has out surpassed Nikon Digitals line up. I have used P.C.'s all my life and until i started using mac's i thought P.C. were far superior. Until i currently really started using the processing power of a G4, powerbook and powerbook pro. It's a whole nother ball game. Everyone should give it a try at least.

I just got a Mac Pro to use with windowsXP and osx. It's the quietest, fastest, most well-designed computer I've owned in the past 20 or so years. Highly recommend picking one up.
