Double DIN video head unit thread

heres my contribution.

Valor headunit
Honda navpod with nav system(yes the old one)
Kenwood 6.75 component system and amp KAC-8403
SOS double-din bracket

Also going in, CF center console and V1 stealth invisi mirror

Hey Ko-nsx, can you post pics of your dash when its complete? I'm really curious as to how the double-din unit will sit with the SOS bracket--i.e. flush or sticking out.
Thanks.

Kenwood's CES video. Looks like they have a new fixed face unit similar to the AVIC-D3.

OH MY I WANT THIS.... i was literally just about to pull the trigger and get a DNX7100... any word on pricing? release date? model number? At face value it looks like the best of both worlds between the Kenwood and the Pioneer D3...

I haven't seen any good CES reports from the Kenwood booth as to what the model number is. I would get the non-fixed face if I were you though. Because the reverse tilt makes a big difference and it will definitely have better features. I expect we will have more information within a week or two.

Cool thanks for the insight. Its just that I haven't seen any pics of the DNX being able to sit flush with the dash (i.e. sticking out half an inch or so), unlike some other models (D3, DDX)... so i was hoping this new one may not be as long and easier to install cleanly..

i jsut got my system done last weekend here are some pics

Ok, the unit is called the DNX-8120 and you can find lots of info using Google.

Very nice because the Bluetooth module is Parrot which is considered the best when it comes to bluetooth for cars. Comes with navigation integrated and MSRP is $1600. There will be a lower end model, DDX-812 which has most of the same features except the navigation is optional, MSRP $1000. I would go for this one because you can change out the NAV later. Expected to arrive in March.

Another interesting feature is that both units include 2 relays which can be used as switches for items such as a garage door opener or whatever you want, you can get really creative. This can be controlled through the GUI. DVD audio and DTS 5.1 are also new.

I was gonna get a double DIN last year but decided to wait. I was planning on it early this year; however, my stock BOSE speakers are acting up again:rolleyes: It's only been about 3 or 4 years since I refurbed them, but I guess they don't last long.

If I'm gonna pull the trigger on a double DIN like this new kenwood, I need to upgrade my speakers and get an amp as well. When I'm ready to do this Malibu, I will need your expert advice.

Regarding this new wicked looking Kenwood, you said that it may be wiser to get the NON GPS version because you can change out the NAV later. How so? I'm a bit confused on that. Also, is there any way to have the NAV screen from the Double DIN unit displayed on a Separate screen, as in the screen on the Nav Pod??

Thanks for the research Malibu! I will definitely be keeping my eyes open to the reviews as they come along...

Question for Malibu or Decosse mainly but anyone who KNOWS free to chime in. I have read this thread at least five times but still have a few questions. Please forgive me if they've been addressed before:

1) What does it take to defeat the Alpine IVA-W205 to watch DVD's while you drive?

Never mind on question 1. I found all of the trigger units for the Alpines...

2) Is there a negative tilt feature on the IVA-W205?

3) Is the Kenwood 7100 a better option than the Alpine? It's sounds like an awesome unit but I've always found the Alpine switchology much more intuitive for me than any Kenwood I've used.

3) Is the Kenwood KDV-412 Single DIN with a LZ-702W Monitor in the upper pod a good, lower cost alternative solution to the angle problems of the lower dash? I'm realy only interested in IPOD and DVD/CD for now. Any thoughts? I'd like cheap but not if it's trash.....

4) I love the look of Double DIN but I must say single DIN with the upper monitor in the POD sure seems to resolve a lot of problems.

Man, I gotta find a cheaper hobbie......

The fixed face unit is the DNX-5120. Unlike the AVIC-D3, the Nav is built in and does not use a CD/DVD. It's the same Garmin NAV unit you will find in the 8120. The screen is smaller at 6.1" and the face is fixed. MSRP $1000.

There will also be a DDX-512 which is the same unit without NAV and selling for less. Both units will have the fastest Ipod control available.

This unit is what I want. The question is the image shown below is of the DNX 5120 shows external controls, (knob, etc)

I can't find info on the DDX-512, (other than it has reverse tilt & larger screen.) My question is will the DDX-512 have the external controls as shown above or will it be like this: *DNX-8120 ?
dnx8120.jpg

the DNX-5120 has front loading CD. Will the DDX-512 be the same? Who knows?

Sorry for the newbee questions about a product that is not out yet but I am real interested in the DDX-512, (I have the KNA-G510 nav already.)

I went a little bit of a different route, but It is the same idea I guess.

I have a DVD Playing Single Din Headunit coupled with a PXA-H700 Eq that is the other Single Din unit.

I liked the face plate of the eq because you have full control over volume, tracks and such while you are playing with EQ settings. One has no control over the other so that was huge plus for me. All of the video and nav plays up on the screen above

I had this machined bracket made to mount the Alpine touch Screen TV into the JDM Nav pod.

And it turned out really nice in the end. I still have to clear coat my console trim piece and fill a little gap at the bottom of the headunit.

I dig it! Nice Job. I was just wondering how that would look. Awesome. Did you use any switching units to enable DVD playback while driving? I read where you have to use one for each Alpine video unit. ie: player and monitor would both need one.

I have one switching unit wired to just the monitor. The Player does not need one which is one of the reasons why I love it. It is just like a normal cd head unit. no crappy touch screen or menues to mess with and No sun wash out etc etc etc.

Yes I do get comments. "dude, why do you have 2 cd players?"

Hi, all,
Just had the Kenwood DNX 7100 installed into my NSX by a local company in Rockville, MD, called Car Toyz 2. The shop had to cut the OEM center console and then repaint it. I've only had it for a day, so I've only had a chance to play with it a little. It's okay so far, but there are just a couple of minor issues that I have observed:
- I used the SOS double din bracket, and it turns out that you cannot close the ash tray anymore. I discovered this when I went to pick up my car from the stereo shop.
- If I set the unit on reverse tilt, I cannot eject CD's unless I push the eject button and "help" the unit open by pushing forward on the top of the frame while the unit is trying to open. Otherwise, it won't open.
- I also had Sirius and Bluetooth installed, and they work okay.
- I haven't adjusted any settings yet, but when I turn the unit on, I hear this background "noise." It's hard to describe, but it sounds kinda like when you turn the volume all the way up on a radio (that you haven't yet hit the "play" button on), you can hear this very faint background "noise." " Background Static" sounding? I don't know. Any advice on this, guys?

This is very interesting. Is the SOS bracket getting in the way of the ash tray, or does it have to do with how the kenwood unit is sitting? I'm almost certain SOS would have designed it with this in mind, but you should post this question to them and see if others are getting this problem on their group buy thread...
