FX Motorsports Development, Billy Johnson, and the Cricket/Yokohama Tire Unlimited NSX set a track record for a production car and claim the overall title at Redline Time Attack.

Pahrump, NV (Sunday, September 27th, 2009) -The FX Motorsports Development NSX with driver Billy Johnson set a new record for a production based vehicle at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch. The final time came in at 2:13.057 substantially besting the previous record by almost 20 seconds! The time was good enough to capture the overall championship for Round 7 of the Redline Time Attack Series by 5 seconds over the next fastest competitor. It was also rumored that the FXMD NSX was within less than .5 seconds of the overall track record set by a V8 radical!

Billy Johnson said "What a crazy weekend. With blistering temperatures and more gravel on the track then off, I wasn’t sure if we were in a Time Attack or a Baja race. The team has done an amazing job as usual prepping the car and overcoming problems throughout the weekend. With the reliability of the car to the point where it is now the team is able to develop the car to make it faster, and the times are proof of that.”

“I am very proud of the team this past weekend. We had to overcome some major hurdles like cracked brake rotors, losing vacuum lines, and overheating issues from ambient temperatures over 110*F and track temperatures of 150*F. Mike did a great job tuning the car to handle these harsh conditions. The motor held up great, as our competitors motors could not keep up.” said crew chief Radomir Banda.

With this win FXMD is in a strong position for the overall championship and now hold six track records: Laguna Seca, Long Beach Grand Prix, Buttonwillow Raceway, Willow Springs International Raceway, Carolina Motorsports Park, and now Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their superior track proven products and unwavering support. Special thanks to Sam Kwa from tire for providing us with valuable advice via phone throughout the entire weekend.

Official press release:

It's hard to believe that we are already bringing the 2009 Redline Time Attack season to a close, but Round #7 of the 8 round series is now in the books leaving only one event left on the schedule. Round #7 was held at Spring Mountain Motorsports Park in Pahrump, Nevada, about 45 minutes outside of Las Vegas. This track is technically the birthplace of time attack in the United States as Redilne Time Attack held their first ever time attack even here at this track on the same configuration back in September 2005. The track is a grueling 3.1 miles long packed with 18 turns of all shapes and sizes. With only a few very short straight aways this is definitely a track for cars that can carry tremendous mid corner speed. The track favors light weight over high horsepower and the results reflect that.

This event was a virtual whose who of time attack with nearly every big name Unlimited teams from the 2009 season showing up to trade blows. FX Motorsports Development had the home track advantage with their Acura NSX, but AMS Performance, GST Motorsports, World Racing, Fontana Nissan, and others came out to challenge them on their own turf. In the Modified ranks, the long awaited Ryan Gates/JC Maynet battle looked like it was finally going to come to a head as both were in attendance and looking good in practice. We also saw a few new Modified class entrants that looked to be serious contenders in the Modified RWD division with AFI Turbo and Harman Motive both bringing out forced inducted S2000s to try and de-throne Matt Andrews and his Miata. In the Street class, we saw many familiar faces back at the track to continue the Street Class West championship fight. Manly Kao was prepared for battle in his Lotus Elise and returning champs Jeremy Toye and the Reese Tuning/Robispec Evo were out as well. Stock class had a huge showing with a lot of new and exciting entries as well as a few familiar faces from the first two west coast rounds!

The weather was HOT but the Unlimited Class action was even hotter. Determined to show everyone who owns the Nevada desert, Billy Johnson and the FX Motorsports Development Acura NSX got hard at work to make the car as fast as possible. The old track record from 2005, set by Tarzan Yamada in the XS Skyline GTR was standing somewhere in the two minute, thirty two second range. The overall track record for any car at any event on this track was reported to be somewhere in the two minute, twelve second range set by the track's owner in a V8 powered Radical race car. Well the FX Motorsports Development put on quite a show and blew everyone's expectations out of the water turning in a fast lap of 2:13.057 despite 100+ degree weather! This gross display of performance earned them the Overall Event, Overall Unlimited Class, and Unlimited RWD Class titles running five seconds faster than anyone else. Mike Cronin Jr. in the Fontana Nissan 350Z would take 2nd place in Unlimited RWD with a 2:22.982 which was still 10 seconds faster than the previous record! Taking second place overall and the Unlimited AWD victory was Paul Gerard in the AMS Performance/NOS Energy Drink Evo X with a 2:18.055, the only other team besides FXMD to break the 2:20.000 barrier. Taking second place in Unlimited AWD was Gary Sheehan and the GST Motorsports Subaru Impreza with a 2:21.657 followed by Dez Ballard and the Hankook Tire/Gruppe-S Subaru STI in 3rd with a 2:35.995. World Racing's Scion tC piloted by the madman known as Chris Rado once again dominated the Unlimited FWD class with a 2:27.056 despite having to swap in a whole new motor in between time attack sessions. Andrew Gillis would claim 2nd in Unlimited FWD with his Gillis Motorsports Ford Focus with a 2:32.541. Nearly every Unlimited Class competitor broke the standing track record from 2005 which shows you how far the sport and its competitors have come in the last four years.

The Modified Class was the scene of one of the most anticipated re-matches of the season between Ryan Gates and the Gates311.com/AMS Performance Evo X and JC Maynet with his Harman Motive STI. Gates has been on quite the winning streak this season and he showed no signs of stopping as he piloted his beautiful blue Evo X to the top of the Overall Modified and Modified AWD podium with a time of 2:24.883. JC Maynet reportedly had a few small issues with his STI but still managed to put up a good fight taking 2nd in Modified AWD with a 2:25.371. Following in 3rd in Modified AWD was Russ Warr and the LIC Motorsports Subaru STI with a 2:30.215. The Modified RWD class was HUGE at this event with plenty of familiar faces and plenty of fresh new ones. Jeremy Renshaw and the AFI Turbo/Competition Clutch Honda S2000 shook things up with the win and a 2:31.657 lap time for their first Redline Time Attack effort. The rest of the Modified RWD class podium was also filled with new faces with the Lotus Exige S of Brent Bauman taking 2nd place with a 2:32.680 and JC Maynet in the new Harman Motive Honda S2000 entry taking 3rd with a 2:34.543. The Modified FWD class was once again dominated by Tim Kuo and SportCar Motion, but this time they had an Acura Integra instead of the Honda Civic they have run in the past. Kuo piloted the new car to a 2:34.114 lap time showing a lot of potential for the new chassis! Tom Liang and the JHPUSA/RaceLikeBunnies.com Honda Civic Si took 2nd Place with a 2:42.824 while the BDX Ford Focus driven by Chris Stout would bring home 3rd place with a 2:47.367

Although the Street Class East Championship has already concluded, the Street Class West Championship was only half way done! The 18 turn technical Spring Mountain course was the perfect compliment to Manly Kao's featherweight TrackHQ/APR/Toyo Lotus Elise but he would get edged out by the monster Reese Tuning/Robispec Evo IX driven by Jeremy Toye. Toye took home the Overall Street and Street AWD class wins with a 2:33.485 lap time. Stephen Ruiz and the StopTech/AMS Performance Evo X would settle for 2nd with a 2:34.868 with Erik Islas and the Robispec/Tuning Technologies Evo IX in 3rd with a 2:35.367. Although Manly and his TrackHQ/APR/Toyo Lotus Elise didn't claim the overall Street Class victory, he did dominate the Street RWD class walking away with an impressive win with a lap time of 2:34.886. The DSport/Vortech/And1Concepts Honda S2000 of Robert Choo battled issues all weekend but managed to squeak in one good lap of 2:39.891 to claim 2nd place. Tim Kuo would find himself in 3rd in his personal Honda S2000 with a lap of 2:41.223. Matt Andrews and the KBR/Robispec Mitsubishi Eclipse was the favorite to win Street FWD in practice, but engine issues forced them onto the trailer before the competition. It was Clint Boisdeau in the FSWerks Ford Focus who would claim the Street FWD class victory with a 2:43.284 besting 2nd place finisher Jason Nathan and his Dodge Neon SRT-4 who ran a 2:48.753. Rounding out the Street FWD podium in 3rd place was Brian Alvarez in the Tri-Point/Yokohama/Rays/HKS Mazdaspeed3 with a 2:50.826.

The Stock Class competitors showed up in the masses for this event with plenty of familiar faces bringing the level of competition up a few notches in the newest class to Redline Time Attack! One of the new cars in attendance was the Robispec/HBSpeed/AST/Toyo Subaru STI driven by Robert "Robi" Fuller. Robi would claim the Overall Stock Class and Stock AWD victory with a 2:39.259 raising the bar for whats to come in the Stock Class. Thomas Smith celebrated with a backflip at the awards ceremony after his 2:40.639 lap time earned him 2nd Place in Stock AWD in his Subaru STI. Taking 3rd in Stock AWD was Matt Dennison and the Tuning Technologies/Robispec Evo with a 2:41.078. The Stock RWD class was also won by a new comer to the class. Paul Dentice and his AE Performance/JIC/Hankook Nissan 370Z pulled off sweet victory with a 2:43.830 less than a second ahead of Jairo Jaramillo and his Honda S2000 in 2nd with a 2:44.763. Rounding out the Stock RWD podium was another newcomer and Vegas local Kam Urquhart in the Brakehorn Productions Honda S2000 with a 2:44.985 right on the heels of 2nd place. In Stock FWD, it would be Eric Emmerson with another win in his Acura Integra Type R coming all the way from Washington state. Emmerson would claim vicroty with a lap of 2:47.969 followed by the TimeAttackForums.com Mini Cooper JCW of Kris Derentz who ran a 2:50.931 for 2nd place in his first time attack. Adrian Torres in the RaceLikeBunnies.com Toyota Celica would claim the third spot on the Stock FWD podium with a 2:52.881.

The Drift Class also had a few entries at this event, but whats more exciting is who those entries were. Formula D superstars Rhys Millen and Chris Forseberg made the Drift Class a fan favorite as they tried to hustle their drift cars around the track to see what kinda of lap times they can get without filling the air with tire smoke. Rhys Millen and the RedBull/Hyundai/RMR Genesis Coupe would take top honors in this class running a 2:30.819. Chris Forseberg did not run his convertible V8 powered 350Z that you usually see sliding around Formula D tracks across the nation. Instead, Forseberg piloted his NOS Energy/Maxxis Tire turbocharged Nissan 350Z Coupe around to a 2:41.849 lap time and 2nd place in the Drift Class.

Be sure to check back with us in November for coverage of the final round of the 2009 Redline Time Attack season to be held at Auto Club Speedway November 14th & 15th.
