This is what I posted in our private NSX group. My story of going from a 17 to 19 NSX. Sorry for the formatting of the copy paste.
Just wanted to go over my experience in going from a 2017 NSX which I bought new to trading for a slightly used essentially new 2019 NSX.
I was looking to trade the car towards a leftover 2019 Porsche 911 turbo or either a 2020 Audi r8 or leftover 2018 r8 v10 plus.
In the Porsche case there were over 200 leftover 911 turbos and I was consistently able to negotiate close to 30k off. I felt this was marginal and that
40k to 60k the latter on leftover turbo s could be achieved later when the new turbo comes out as there was plenty of leftover inventory.
In the R8s case I was able to achieve about $20k off the new 2020 R8 and 53k off leftover R8 v10 plus. I want to get this out of the way and risk sounding like a dick here but anyone who thinks the NSX is the only exotic car to receive discounts is DEAD WRONG. It is the only exotic except for the BMW I8 that gives a known rebate without being dishonest. See Porsche will lie to you as will McLaren and Audi and say there are not rebates. While that will be true there is money offered in the form of trunk money or other deals directly from the vehicles manufacturer that the non greedy dealer has the discretion of using at certain times based on inventory.
Example over a year ago the 2018 R8 was offering 40k to 50k off msrp on new v10 plus when they had 200 listed in inventory and this was marked at some dealers on the sticker. Mclaren dealers will punch a car as a demo particularly 570s even though the car has like 40 miles on it and offer 40k to 60k off easy at the end of the year or on leftovers. So please just stop it with the crying about NSX prices. AND if a dealer wont move on say a McLaren's price walk out its BS. Know the total amount of cars for sale nationwide and keep an eye on trends in pricing and scour forums for what people are getting discount wise. The deals can be had.
The real problem is NSX owners who allow dealers to bully them on trade in and get ridiculously low prices. You guys control the market. Think about it. This is a limited vehicle its not like a corvette where they are making 30k of these things a year. We have the ability to control price somewhat or at least to negotiate. I am not saying to be greedy just walk away and try to negotiate.
Sorry, now that that is out of the way back to why I went back to the NSX.
I had been looking at 911 Turbos for the last Couple years. After checking out the 2019s I felt they were an exceptional car but they were not as comfortable to sit in as the NSX. The ride is much more comfortable in sport mode and bottom line 911s are a dime a dozen. I can throw a rock at every stop light and hit some form of 911.
As far as the R8 is concerned The NSX drives better, corners better and is faster than the non plus version even with the new base v10 R8 bumping the horsepower by 30hp. Once you get past the cool google map display in the R8 you also quickly realize the NSX is much more technologically advanced through the drivetrain. And in my opinion looks a hell of a lot better and again much more comfortable seats and ride quality. Now keep in mind this was all compared to my 2017 NSX. I had not driven a 2019 yet.
So I located a 2019 near me slightly used a little over 1800 miles at a local dealership. I contacted them with what I was offered on my trade in $105k at both Porsche and Audi and we agreed on that component and then we agreed on the price at a little over 127k. I found out that they had been sitting on the car for a month and were going to auction it at Manheim.
My condition on the sale even occurring was a full PP inspection by NSX techs. The dealer was so afraid of the NSX being damaged that it did not want it taken off the lot. They worked with me and had the car FLAT BEDDED ! To Acura 25 miles away. They agreed to let me test drive it with the NSX tech after full inspection assuming it was ok.
So when I arrived at the Acura dealership in the shop area on the lift I saw what I assumed was a new NSX being prepped for delivery turns out it was the one I was going to buy. I asked the tech how does it look? He said brand new its perfect. They had been checking it out for over 2 hours and had the bottom covers off the car. Everything was perfect the car looked brand new.
He got it off the lift and I asked him to drive with me riding shotgun. These guys typically have incredible experience with the car and Acura's training is very extensive. Who better to judge the car.
When I got in he asked if I had ever driven a 2019. which I hadn't he then said there have been some improvements.
Please keep in mind a lot of the car reviewers that test a 2019 have not driven a 2017 since the launch years ago therefore how can they really compare it? It has also been stated that the new NSX specific sport contact 6 tire is responsible for most of the performance increase. Not the upgrades to the 2019. Here is the thing. For several months I had been driving around in a 2017 with new NSX specific sport contact 6 tires. So I would be able to tell the difference if there were any immediately and separately from the tires since I had the same set and most journalist had last driven a 17 on sport contact 5s.
When the Tech said there had been some improvements he was not kidding.
It feels like a different car immediately rolling slowly out of the parking lot the car felt much stiffer more rigid without compromising ride quality. The steering has much more feel to it. Sport mode now feels like a cross between sport and sport plus. The car is definitely more aggressive more playful without compromising ride quality. A much stiffer tank like feeling. The car is 25% better than it was. Below is a copy and paste of the full changes to 2019
Acura started with larger front and rear stabilizer bars, which had the effect of increasing the car’s stiffness by 26-percent and 19-percent respectively. Then it made the rear tow link bushings 21-percent stiffer, and the rear hub 6-percent more rigid. Combined with revamped hybrid software, tweaks to the magnetorheological dampers, power steering, and other systems, the result is a car with more readily-controlled – and indeed provoked – understeer and oversteer at the limit, not to mention a car that’s more playful in general.
I have no idea how Acura could do this without compromising ride quality. The car is hands down amazing. Nothing feels or handles like this car or is as comfortable or drivable or had the sense of immediate acceleration. More importantly the car feels special ,Sorry the Porsche did not and the R8 not even close.
I see a Porsche at every stop light and soon will see 30k c8 corvettes every year being built. You will be able to throw a rock at a stoplight and hit 7 corvettes. No thanks. I like to be different I don’t want what everyone else has and I am not a douche bag that needs a big name brand badge.
The more important deciding factor for me was during the recalls for gas tanks etc. Acura and particularly Lee the NSX concierge always made sure things ran smoothly. Acura treated me well and no matter how much of a pain in the ass I was they got my car fully sorted. Do you know what GM would have done on a recall like that? They would have lied, waited till cars caught fire endangered peoples lives etc. That is what GM does. Look up the GM ignition scandal.
Acura hands down has treated me better than Porsche or Audi.
So there it is and why I went with another NSX. If Acura keeps up like this they may have a customer for life.
