Pinewood Derby NSX ?

Very nice effort. I'd make the nose of the car a little more angled to cut down on wind resistance. The side vents may also be a source of resistance too. Maybe you can make them a little more flush and use paint to make them look deeper. After it's all painted up put some go-fast stickers on it. :)

Our wind tunnel and aerodynamic efficiency testing doesn't start until next week.

Looks good Todd, your son does pretty good work with that dremel!

He's amazing with power tools for a 6 year old. You should see what he can do with a chain saw...it's breath taking.

Thanks for the tips and advice. Please keep them coming. What's this coffee can trick?

When it comes time to nail the wheels onto the car its important to have them nailed in just right. As you can imagine to tight the wheels just will not turn, to loose and the wheels will wobble and slow the car down.

One trick thats been passed around (and has worked very well for us) is to use a plastic lid from a coffee can (or similar size) as a spacer when nailing the wheels on. Since its thickness is very close to what the ideal space needed is you end up with a much more carefree (and a lot less stressful :) ) way to let your son nail the wheels on.

If its something you'd like to try all you need to do is to cut a 1/8 piece pie slice from the cover. Discard the 1/8 piece and use the 7/8 piece as a spacer. Then to assemble the wheel to the car just put the nail thru the wheel and press it gently in the hole on the car. Slide the cover between the wheel and the car until the center of the cover rests on the nail, make sure the nail is straight then hammer tight. Remove the cover, give it a test spin and if happy, put a drop of glue on the underbody of the car to hold the nail in place.

Hope this helps.

Best of luck and have fun.

The Pinewood Derby was an awesome event and day. Our NSX-Racer turned out to look great, (special thanks to Vinny) and was super fast. My son won 1st place for the Tiger Cubs and 2nd place overrall for the Pack. Thanks for all the helpful tips Prime. We also had a few real cars parked out front of the event to help set the theme.

Yes, that's a "real" cf wing.

Nice. I think the aircraft carrier was pretty awesome too...and I wasn't even a squid! In all seriousness though, it turned out great.

My older boys (9 and 8) and I did it last year.....but they didn't do scouts this year just due to being too busy (when did kids schedules get so filled at such an early age?). We had a great time....it might be time to build another car just for fun.

When my son did Pinewood Derby there were only minivans in the parking lots.

He must have been in the wrong den but we could build a good car.

PS - He just put my MR2 into a guard rail, so watch out the need for speed starts early.

Nice trophy!

Interestingly, we have some nice "real" cars in our pack. A few months ago, we went on a camping trip in BFE and I was afraid my SUV was going to get stuck it was so far in...then one of the dads pulls up to his tent in this...
