Police officer delays man while his relative is dying

I am very pro police officer and we had four of them die in the line of duty last week here in the Bay Area, but that was one of the most stupid and cruel things I have ever seen.:frown:

I guess you just can't teach common sense. What a jerk. Does not deserve to be a cop. I feel for the deceased's family. The NFL player handled himself remarkably.

If I were him, I would have given them a police escort to the hospital, and waited to validate their story. Then, when they were done visiting the patient, I would have dealt with the issue of the ticket if one needed to be issued.

I have given more than one police escort for just that type of thing. All I then did was verify their emergency was legitimate. No thoughts of a ticket at all if the story was real. If the dolt in Texas is the best Texas has.....Texas is in BIG trouble.

I'm a big fan of the police, but this story had me raging.

Common sense demand that we treat each other as human beings when it comes to issues like family death or health emergency. It is inhumane to deny human dignity in the name of "upholding the law" in this regard.

The best police officers on the street are often those who are in their prime, ie 20's / 30's. Unfortunately that is when the testerones rage the most and they want to prove they're the "boss" and demand respect. Too bad we can't have more wise and understanding adults in their 40's and 50's in the bodies of the 20's and 30's to deal with the public.

I have been the recipient of your type of officer when my mother was dying and I drove 22 hours straight from college in Arizona to get home for christmas only to get this news when I arrived. I continued to the hospital at about 90 mph and was pulled over by a state trooper, I told him my story and got a police escort to the hospital, then the trooper left without another word, I assumed he verified my story prior to arrival and left without a word. It took me a week to track him down and thank him! He deserved my thanks!

FWIW he only persued them a couple of blocks. The cop actually witnessed him stop before proceeding through the intersection so he was still using precautions to safely get to the hospital. It's a no brainer.

I read this story a couple days ago and was furious, seriously what kind of place is this world going to turn into if law officials are acting like this. There needs to be some sort of humanity shown in situations like this.

I agree with the poster above, at least everyone now knows how much of a jackass this cop is.

Yep, and he held them there even after HOSPITAL security, came out and told him that the nurses needed him ASAP as his mother in law was dying

the cops response "hold on, I'm almost finished":mad::mad:

fire that prick

I say firing would not be justice. I would lock him up with some criminals, and let him sit behind bars and then lecture them.

For the record, I'm pro-officer for the most part, even though the majority of my traffic stops have not gone well...

My experience with the police:
70% of the time, rude, arrogant, and/or out of place.
20% of the time, fair but firm. :frown:
10% of the time, fair yet pleasant attitude.

I am pro-cop and anti-dousch-bag

This guy is obviously the latter.

Hopefully he'll be jockying the reception desk in an office building, or patrolling the mall after this act of idiocy.

Of further note- the investigation into Powell is now extended to previous cases because the idiot also mentioned on camera that he had falsified a report regarding a pursuit from a month earlier...

Guys like this give Police a bad name.

Thankfully Moats kept his cool- this could have been a lot worse.

I cannot believe what I just read.

WHAT THEY SAID: The traffic stop
Excerpts from Officer Robert Powell and Ryan Moats:

Moats: You really want to go through this right now? My mother-in-law is dying. Right now! ... I got seconds before she's dying, man!

Powell: If my mom was dying I'd probably be a little upset too, but when I saw flashing red and blues, I would stop.

Moats: Did I not stop at the red light?

Powell: You stopped, then you drove through the red light.

Moats: I stopped, I checked the traffic, I waved the traffic off, then I turned.

Powell: This is not an emergency vehicle. You do not have the right to control the traffic.

Moats: OK. All right ... just go ahead and check my insurance so I can go ahead and go. If you're gonna give me a ticket, give me a ticket. I really don't care, just ...

Powell: Your attitude says that you need one.

Moats: I don't have an attitude. All I'm asking you is just to hurry up. Cause you're standing here talking to me...

Powell: Shut your mouth and listen.

Moats: Shut my mouth? Is that how you talk to me, too?

Powell: Shut your mouth and listen. If you want to keep this going, I'll just put you in handcuffs, and I'll take you to jail for running a red light.

Moats: OK. All right.

Powell: I can do that.

Moats: OK.

Powell: State law says I can.

Moats: Yes, sir. Go ahead.

Powell: If you don't settle down that's what I'm gonna do.

Moats: Yes, sir.

Powell: All right, If you don't settle down, your truck's illegally parked – I'll tow that as well.

Moats: Yes, sir.

Powell: OK, I can screw you over. I'd rather not do that. Your attitude will dictate everything that happens, and right now, your attitude sucks.

Moats: Yes, sir.

Powell: OK, I turned my red and blues on as you were going over the bridge ...

Moats: You think I'm gonna stop when my wife's mother is dying?

Powell: You are required to stop. What you're doing does not matter. Red and blues, you have to stop. I can charge you with fleeing right now.

Moats: Yes, sir. ...

Powell: I can take you to jail. I can tow your truck. I can charge you with fleeing.

Moats: Yes, sir, you can. I understand.

Powell: I can make your night very difficult.

Moats: I hope you'll be a great person and not do that.

More unbelieveable, is the way Moat's responded. I just gained alot of respect for him...

wow...talk about a class act, I would not have been that calm in those circumstances

Watch the video- At first I started to empathize with the officer- he has just stepped into an unknown situation- people getting out of the vehicle- there is a potential for threat.

Moats is clearly very emotional at the top of the event, but he gets himself together, and then presents a very calm demeanor which should have de-escalated the matter.

The Cop then starts the lecturing- telling him what he could do to him, charge him with...

When Moats calms down (which he manages about a min into the video), if you listen carefully there is a calm female voice in the background explaining to the officer that Moat's has a relative in the hospital that is "coding", and that Moats needs to get inside- The officer disregards this, and that is just callous.

The next 8 minutes were completely unneccessary, and I am sure that is why Powell has been placed on admin leave.

What follows after Moats goes into the hospital is Powell explaining to another officer how he was involved in a pursuit in January which he initiated under a false pretense- He states that in his write up of the incident report he indicated that he felt "threatened" when a suspect turned around at a dead end, which caused him to initiate a chase.

The Chief indicated that event will also be investigated internally.

The most despicable thing of all these events, is that the officer in question here, more likely than not, still feels he did nothing wrong!!!

It is my respective position this officer along with a great many other law enforcement officers require some attitude adjustments.

My feelings were just confirmed by reading the entire text associated with this news piece ...

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/032609dnmetcopstop.3e9c080.html

Powell, 25, has not returned calls. He has defended his actions to department officials.

"My understanding is that Officer Powell, even when he saw the videotape, believed he had not acted inappropriately," Kunkle said.

PAID LEAVE?

That's like rewarding him. Hey you don't have to come into work, but you still get paid.

Fire his ass.

I would imagine that the P.D. would be in some kind of employment violation if they didn't pay him while this thing is still being "investigated".

In the private sector if you don't work, you don't get paid.
