The Post Office

Yesterday I went down stairs to get my mail. (I live in a high rise building.) Got the mail and saw an "attempt to deliver" slip. I thought that was weird because I had been home all morning and the delivery person could have come to my place and knocked on the door and I would have signed for it. That's what the regular delivery guy always does. In fact, the regular delivery guy will leave it with the super who will sign for it if I'm not home and then the super will get the package to me. Or, the delivery person can call me from a phone outside the building that will ring on my home phone allowing me to let someone in the building. But NOOOOOOO. I get the attempt to deliver slip. Well, I went to the post office which is about 10 blocks from my house today, along with my attempt to deliver slip. Waited in line.... Got to the counter and they told me that my package wasn't at that post office, but it was at the post office on Pine Street. I asked if there was any parking at that post office and the lady told me that in fact there was no parking at that location. So now I'm thinking I'll have to take a taxi over there to retrieve the package. Post office lady at the counter told me I could call the Pine Street location and ask them to re-deliver. OK. Attempted to call the Pine Street post office on several occasions today...40 or 50 rings...no answer. FINALLY I get an answer. Told the lady that I would like to arrange a re-delivery. She told me I had to call 1-800-ASKUSPS because they contact the post office that has the package. I said, "You're the post office that has my package and I am calling you. She said that wouldn't work and that I had to call 1-800-ASKUSPS so they could send them a message that I want to have my package re-delivered.:eek: OK. I called 1-800-ASKUSPS. I get the voice recognition answering service. I had to say; the day the attempted delivery took place, say and spell my first and last name, say and spell my address, say if it was a letter, package, etc., if it was a signature confirmation, registered mail, etc, and a 22 digit "article number" all of this was a long drawn out mechanical process. After I stated it was a "signature confirmation" the computer voice said that I was going to be transferred to "customer service." What? Now this guy answers and asks me the date of attempted delivery, my name... I said I just provided all of that information on the computerized answering service. He said, "We can't view any of that information." What?confused::eek::mad:

People wonder why the U.S. Postal Service is losing money. OH MY GAWD!

Why all of the hasstle for the package? It's my medication.

Oh, the UPS guy came to my door a few hours ago and handed my a package.

Compitition. I don't think so. Thanks for allowing me to vent.

I decided not to renew 2 magazine subscriptions because 4, 2009 issues never made it to my door, and some of the ones that did make it were late and or damaged. When I went to complain to my local post office, they were cool and apologetic, but that didn't stop my imagination from seeing a postal employee reading my magazines while taking a dump.

We've received those "Attempt to Deliver" slips in our mailbox and I know for a fact that those days I was at home. So, I know the mail delivery person was just too fracken lazy to make an extra stop and come to our door. Our mail boxes are grouped together in clumps of 8 houses so getting out of the truck to come to the door would have been an inconvenience.

I used to hangout with a guy that was a mail carrier. He used to tell me he would intentionally skip houses on certain days to lengthen his lunch, so he could run personal errands.

I've had to deal with UPS several times over "failed delivery attempts". I've watched the UPS truck come, pause and leave. Minutes later, I check the tracking, and apparently, unbeknownst to me, I wasn't home.

USPS always left the pink ticket in my mailbox telling me to pick it up at the post office. They have been delivering my more recent packages to my door, though.

For future reference, you might try https://redelivery.usps.com.

funny this topic should come up as i just completed on online usps customer survey today about our business mailbox / services @ our local, "old school" post office (the "heritage" post office in downtown campbell). i gave their post office / services / employees an "outstanding" rating.

our local, home delivery is terrible and i've given serious thought to having our personal mail re-directed to a mailbox @ the post office.

really sorry to hear about these troubles, doug!

Interesting. I have the opposite views for USPS and UPS. I can't think of any time in the last 5+ years of delivery where UPS was a positive experience. I will go out of my way to use FedEx and down to the neighborhood USPS for their service.

The USPS doesn't lose money. They have to balance their budget unlike most federal agencies. They either cut costs or raise rates like private industry; with all the beauracracy of a federal agency.

The horror stories I've read above, are common and things I experience myself. However, it's never been worse than if a company chooses to ship me something through FedEx HOME. That service is beyond shit, HORRIBLE hours to pickup if they leave you a doortag, and I have to drive nearly an hour in stop and go traffic. At that point, why even mail the package to me, I'll just pickup the damn thing.

Really?? USPS has a balanced budget? Last i remember USPS had an operating loss of almost $6 to $12 billion. I believe it is one of the worst federal agencies.

I live in a city with not so many homes and it isn't so crowded. The post office here is a joy because they are so friendly and always pick up the phone and go the extra mile. I had to go to the post office in Hollywood one day and realized that I have it really good.

It was the same way with the banks. My local Wells Fargo branch are just awesome, I actually enjoy going in there to see the people that have gotten to know me.

I had the same experience when I lived in Acton, California for 22 years. All my mail went to PO Box 26. It was about .7 miles from my house. I enjoyed going there any time of day or night, and would often say hello to neighbors or friends. The post office workers were friendly. Now, I live in Orange County and my mail is delivered to my mailbox, about 20 steps from my front door. That's convenient all right, but not as enjoyable.

I hate dealing with the USPS. However, the other night I was sitting on my couch at about 6:30pm and my doorbell rings. I get to the door in about 10 seconds to find a box and I see the UPS driver getting into the $hit brown mobile. I'm sure he needed a signature and I know that it took him longer to get to his truck than it did for me to get to my door. This guy must have put down the package, rang the doorbell, and ran as fast as he could down my pathway, driveway, and into his truck. I guess he still like to play ring and run.

Haha. I've had similar experiences.

Next time, save yourself the hassle and go to:

www.usps.com/redelivery

Or just use Fedex. Between UPS/USPS/Fedex, my experiences with fedex have been awesome.

Hmmm... I was thinking about the good 'ole days (pre teen) about the game when I saw the post title.

2009 figures, $68B in revenue, $71B in expeneses. Rates go up to balance the difference.

I'm not sure calling the USPS one of the worst is accurate. There are many federal agencies that are far worse.

lol:biggrin::biggrin: Thanks for the comments, especially Ken and Hal. Glad I was able to vent and not go postal.

At our Post Office today, I met John Walsh (America's Most Wanted). Very nice friendly guy. Our post office is small. Sometimes I forget my key, they don't even ask my name or box number. - From Renee

Doug, just reading your post elevated my frustration and stress level exponentially. I can't imagine actually having to go through that.

Are you at the point of laughing about it yet?

Well I'm not laughing about it, but it's funny you ask. I stayed home yesterday but they DIDN'T deliver it. I asked for it to be delivered yesterday. But NOOOO. Today I am going to meet Ken and Hal for lunch, so they will probably try to deliver it and I won't be here. What a pain in the butt.

Doug, why don't you just ask Hal for some of his Viagra over lunch. He has plenty to go around, I'm sure.
