Time for Carbon Fiber Wheels?

do you remember how much they weigh? It was something crazy, maybe 10 lb. I remember thinking it was a misprint.

edit-ford says 18lb. i believe this is the report old guy refers to below,

http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...rbon-fiber-gt350r-wheels-use-nasa-technology/

that doesn't seem that light,i realize they are 19's,but my 18" volk ce-28n rears only weigh 17.27 lb. this chart says that ce28n's in 19x8.5 size only weigh 19.4 lb.

i don't know how wide the mustang wheels are,so this looks like a decent weight saving, but nothing astonishing. the real question is-how much do those things cost?

It will definitely be a game changer for the hapless owner who scrubs them on a curb. No running down to the local wheel shop for a MIG touch up and re machine. Perhaps Bondo and a can of black spray paint?

I did see some rather interesting wheel weight comparisons. One reference quoted a rather significant weight reduction compared to the OEM steel wheels??? A Road & Track report waxed ecstatic about the ceramic coating applied to the wheels which was originally developed for the turbine blades in the Space Shuttle engines. I have yet to see turbine blades in a rocket engine, unless they are the blades in the fuel pumps! Too much marketing hype being facilitated by keener journalists.

These are an Australian product, made by Carbon Revolution.

I have seen and picked up one of these wheels myself, they are impressive. At the time, they only had one size offering but I am sure over time this will be expanded. Check out the Koenigsegg video about Carbon Weeels too, if you haven't already - it's quite incredible.

from Popular Mechanics,2012,not sure if pricing is current-

Australian manufacturer Carbon Revolution claims they're responsible for the world's first one-piece carbon fiber wheels, and the weight specs are nothing short of breathtaking: their 19 x 8.5 CR9 wheel tips the scales at only 15.2 lbs, while a 19 x 12 rear comes in at a featherweight 17.8 lbs. The hitch? Equally breathtaking is the CR9's price-- about $15,000 per set.

Current issue of Car and Driver has an article titled Horse Shoes by Don Sherman. Says each wheel is 14 - 15 pounds lighter for a total weight savings of 58 lbs. They tested the acceleration from 30-50 mph with aluminum wheels and then with the carbon fiber wheels and found the car's top gear acceleration dropped from 10.8 seconds to 9.9 seconds. They also say that these wheels "are not susceptible to fatigue failure. Minor surface rash can be repaired with standard painting methods."

Also, Randy Probst drove the car fitted with them on the track in a Head to Head with the Camaro and raved about them in part because of the wheels:

Oh and the replacement costs for the wheels are between $3,433 and $4,053.

The front wheels are 19" X 10.5" the back are 19" X 11". I think the rears end up weighing 18 lb.s. Koenigsegg found a way to get his wheels from 22 lbs. in forged aluminum down to 13 lbs. in carbon fiber for a 19" X 10" wheel!

I think the thing that excites me the most about this technology is that it pays dividends in acceleration, braking and handling with no reduction in fuel economy or ride quality. In fact ride quality actually improves.

Well we don't have to worry about spending that kind of money on CF wheels...

Just for fun I reached out to Carbon Revolution and they responded with the following:

Thank you for your inquiry and interest in our products.

Unfortunately we do not offer wheels for the Honda NSX or any wheels in 17” or 18” diameter. Due to the unique methods used to manufacture carbon fiber wheels it is not possible to produce custom “one off” wheel sets to order. The engineering and tooling costs make this impractical. I am sorry that we cannot assist you with your request.

Best regards,

I wrote a review on the CR CF wheels. Hopefully it'll go live sooner than later. Unfortunately Forgeline's carbon barrel 3pc wheels are also limited to 19" at a minimum.
