Unofficial weight reduction thread

I admire your dedication to the lightweight / Type-R cause Patricio ... do you know the total weight of your machine now?

I admire your dedication to the lightweight / Type-R cause Patricio ... do you know the total weight of your machine now?

got it weighd today at a local Farrari challenge race shop

2518lbs
5 gallons gas in tank
I still have AC, power locks & windows, Nav pod with nexus tablet and full interior and all oem glass, custom suede seats & door cards ect.

and this is on 17/18's with heavier than OEM nitto NT01 tires
235/40/17 are 25lbs
275/35/18 are 28lbs

oem size street tires like my lighter 17/17 setup weighs about 20lbs less making it sub 2500lbs.... also lighter hoosier R6/R7 in current sizes weigh 21 front and 23 lbs rear tires which saves about 8 lbs front and 10 rear...= 18lbs thus the car would be 2500llbs exactly

still looks, shows & drives like a regular street car. :) Which has been my primary goal has been to retain a relatively stock appearence and NSX-R / GT3 drivability.

they weighed front and rear seperatly since one of the scales was not working so thus why there is a front weight of 1008 lbs and rear weight of 1510 lbs

So 2518lb + 13.5 gallons (84lb @ 6.2lb/each) = curb of 2602lb with all fluids.

Nice work -- very impressive. I am trying for 2700 or less with a CTSC.

Thanks!
a goal of 2700 lbs with CTSC and full tank is impressive as well, i think CTSC adds about 60lbs, its around 85lbs minus the 25lbs oem manifold. I know when i shipped a CTSC recently that I sold, the whole shipping package was 110lbs but that included alternator, and brackets, and fluids and cardboard packaging ect..
what weight are you at now? is there a link to your mod list?
do you have corner balance pics?

My goal is 2400lbs with a half tank of gas which is the amount of gas I take to the track.

I use a half tank since in reality in conversation some people will talk empty and some full so using half tank averages out the conversation and does not penalize overly large tanks nor give tiny tanks an advantage.
And nowadays you may notice allot of manufactures especially Ferrari and porche have a habit lately of quoting dry weight in their editorials and advertising especially when comparing the regular version the race version. like the 458 discussed here http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/458-italia-488/448635-458-speciale-curb-weight.html and noted here as an example of one of many http://www.caranddriver.com/news/ferrari-458-speciale-photos-and-info-news thery compare curb to dry to show weight difference... add 22gallons of gas 140lbs and other fluids and there special is not all that much lighter than the non-special. and this new caymen GT4 that is supposed to be 2955 lbs as advertized was measured at 3083 with half a tank and multiple people weighing them well over 3100 with full tank. http://rennlist.com/forums/gt4/889705-true-gt4-weight-and-suspension-info.html these manufactures are getting trickier and trickier. :) not to mention those $12k optional ceramic brakes cost $8k for a brake job.... Just makes the NSX more and more amazing when dissecting the overall picture and weeding out the bull$hit.

FWIW.. I dont know why but the Ferrari challenge race shop today kept referring to the car as being 2474 with no gas, which confused me and they found it strange I kept wanting to refer to it as weight with gas..... to be more specific the shop looked up tank capacity and they actually estimated 7 Gallons in the tank because of reserve the needle actually goes down below the red at empty but, i just wanted to avoid arguing over it on prime so I stated 5 gallons. so according to shop at 11 gallons missing puts the car around 2589 with full tank of gas and 2474 without any gas. Since you have me curious now for full weight next time i see the tank at that same line as when i weighed it I will fill up and see how many gallons fit...

Haha your car is over a half ton lighter than a Laugher-ari.

http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/144137863-post35.html

There are lots of threads out there about the P1, F40/50, enzo and other famous supercars weighing 10-20% more than the commonly cited weights. Caymans too which was a thing that steered me away from them. I am glad that digital scales are more common and people are learning to be more skeptical.

My car is the former McDork silver '91 coupe in this thread:
http://www.nsxprime.com/forum/showthread.php/153568-McDork-s-Silver-NSX-R-inspired

Thankfully he already did those diabolocal jobs removing the tar in the wheelwells and floorpans.

It now has 443whp/320tq on E85, and I am doing a lot of the same weight loss mods that feature in this thread.. with some more to do before a weigh-in. I like quiet for low to mid RPMs so a Fujitsobo ti exhaust (19lb) works well for me. My 'luxuries' to keep are AC, cruise, drivers airbag, and a basic 6lb stereo.

Good point!

In the US, the government defines the curb weight of a vehicle as its weight with a full tank of fuel. However large that tank is. Assuming Honda didn't cheat (they aren't VW after all!), a stock 1991 NSX should weigh 3010 lbs if its tank is full. If its 18.5 gallon tank is empty, it should therefore weigh 2895 lb and with half a tank of fuel, a stock 1991 NSX should weigh 2953 lbs.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but replaced my stock cats with resonated test pipes from AP-X Systems (angus on here). Around a 15lb loss.

I too have tried to find an answer to this.... but find it hard to believe since i have weighed almost every part i have removed or modified. Or I used weights documented by others many times over in this thread.... if 3010 is correct weight full of gas than applying all my mods i would be at 2450lbs now with a half tank which I find hard to believe and I doubt my excel sheet to be off by almost 70lbs

As mentioned above and after years of searching forums for weight reduction tricks and ideas, I have never seen any brand, make, or model of car weigh as little as it is rated with full fluids.

can someone with a all original NSX fill up their tank and stop by a certified CAT scale? I'll paypal whomever can do this $100 for their time. just to find out once and for all what the weight of an OEM NSX is.

I know it is usually rated a the most base model with zero options just like the NSX-R weight of 2810 does not include A/C nor Stereo since they are options. we would need to find out what the most base model zero option NSX had, or did not have. also wonder if the 5mph hour bumpers they add in the US among a few other small safety additions where re-calculated for rated curb weight back then in 1991

reference: here member MVM weighed his car full of fluids and after 72lbs of weight reduction and still weighed 2998 ,
thus equaling an estimated stock weight of 3070

I was with my father 100% stock 1991 NSX at the truck scale and it had 1360kg. This scale is very acurate. I had only a few kg difference with my moded NSX compared to a wheel base scale.

the question is was the tank 100% full of gas because the gas is a 114 lbs variable.

yes, I always use a full tank, except when I scaled mine on the wheel base scale. 1360kg my fathers stock car with full interior, mine 1220kg before I putted the DF seats and lithium iron batterie in.

does anyone know how much a 95 exhaust weighs?

this helpful spreadsheet notes the OEM exhaust at 44 lb.this Wikipedia entry notes starting in 95 the exhaust was lighter-

Other innovations beginning in 1995 included a new and lighter exhaust and muffler configuration for greater efficiency

I think all the 95-2001 exhausts are the same, the tips changed with the 02 updates.

I could try and weigh my 96 with a luggage scale...
