Why black on black?

So I've ordered some Advan 18/19 RS's. I really wanted gold since my car is black but gunmetal was in stock so I went the quicker route and settled for gunmetal with the intent of professionally painting them gold. Seems black/gunmetal on black is in now. I'm on the fence about which color now. Does black on black really look that good? Thanks for any input.

Black on black looks nice, but if you want them to stand out littlebit go for gold or gunmetal.

I love the color of the RS in Gunmetal! I for one prefer some contrast as well which is why I sold my Advans last week and put my Enkeis back on. The Advans looked great but just not my style(too dark for me) and I really love my Enkeis. I think this color looks best on bright colors, but the gunmetal color itself is my favorite of any wheels I have seen.

It's all personal preference. I prefer some contrast. Black wheels on tires imho looks like your're rolling on donuts, unless the finish sets off the wheels. Go with Gold. Gunmetal will probably look good too.

I agree 100%. But it's all personal taste. Some people like the "stealth" look while I like my wheels to stand out a bit more. I have gold wheels on the black nsx and black wheels on the silverstone s2000 and IMO it looks pretty good...my $.02

I agree, I think you lose the details of the wheel design when you are rolling on all black wheels. If you are set on black then a polished lip can help give contrast, but personally I don't think I would do anything darker than gunmetal. Everyone's different though.

Here's what I could pull up for you...

once you go black...

yea you know

for some reason these just look the best in black.

I have a spare set of stock 91 15" and 16" wheels that I'm thinking of doing in black. I think black would hide their smaller diameter well.

What are the popular choices for wheel painting ?
DIY or have it done ?
If having it done is just any Auto body paint shop or is a wheel shop the way to go ?
If DIY what kind of paint ? Polyeurethane or enamels ?
Dont know if I want to spend all the $ on polyeurethane materials for a small job.

I just did a search for "wheel painting".
Lots of you-tube links where people are DIYing with spray cans.
It just never occured to me that one would get a durrable professional look with paint cans.
My spare rims were almost free. Guess I can try the Krylon route.

If you go the professional route, go with polyurethane. When I used to paint wheels I would use an accelerator in the paint to make it cure really fast and hard. Held up pretty well on both car and motorcycle wheels.

I also did a rattle can job on my nissan frontier wheels. I think I used Rustoleum hammer-tone finish(a dark grey metallic) and it came out great.
Just make sure you clean/degrease it really good and sand the surface to give the primer/paint a good surface to stick to. Still looked great 4 years later when I traded it in. Think I only had to do one touch up due to a big rock hitting one of the wheels. Just whipped out the can and a couple of coats later it was all good. Doesn't get any easier.

Here is mine.

Not to me it doesn't.
All-blacked out wheels with no contrasting color or finish makes the wheels sorta disappear. The effect is like 2 holes in the side of the car. SOme other color is needed to bring them out. WHy spend big bucks on wheels just to have them disappear. Never understood that.
The Time Attack look is fine. Polished lips are fine. ANy kind of contrasting color is fine but all-blacked out.....I don't get it.

^ Not for everyone for sure.

Think SR71 or F117
Every time I recheck this thread I'm liking the look more. Definatly not the way to show off the wheels. It does make a statement and its an inexpensive way to make stock wheels add character. Matter of fact the wider the spoke the better it may look.

^ Exactly.

Whether black volks, rotas or even steelies they all look too similar in black.

Im running bronze wheels and even bronze color doesnt have a lot of contrast with a black car. Gold on a black car is the way to go.

The industry slang term used for all black rims/paint/trim is "murdered out". Definitely a hot and current trend.

Try google image for "murdered out" and you'll get tons of pictures. Looks better on some cars than others.

Not my thing personally, but it definitely works on some cars.
