will 265/40-17 fit?

No. The stock rims are 8.5 inches wide. Most 265/40-17 tires are approved only for use on rims that are 9.0-10.5 inches wide.

I have a '91 with the seven-spoke 16/17" 94-01 OEM wheels, the rears of which are 8.5" (according to the Wheel Tech page here on Prime). When I purchased the car it came with 265/40-17 Toyo T1-S on the rear, and they have performed and worn very well. I have put some outrageously-sized tires on my other cars to autocross and have had no ill effects.

nsxtacy is likely correct, though, according to conventional wisdom on the percentage the wheel width should be compared to the section width.

But here on Prime in the Tire Tech, is this:

"[KZ - 2000/7/6] Multiply the rim width by 25.4 and then by 1.1 and 1.3. For an eight inch rim that would give you a range of 223 - 264. BUT, you're not done yet. If the aspect ratio is on the low side (35 - 45) you will need to stay close to the bottom of the range. This will be the case with the NSX. If it's for another car with smaller rims and tires with aspect ratios of 50 - 70 you can creep up to the top of the range."

So, 8.5 * 25.4 * 1.1 and 8.5 * 25.4 * 1.3 gives a range of about 240 - 280 section width, unless I'm missing something. I'd guess the low aspect ratio would limit the width, but like I say I have had no problems with mine.
