Re: Radios and stuff.......
If you don't already know by now, you positively, absolutely HAVE to have a club radio to go on this drive. I have plenty available to rent if you don't have one already. I'll refresh some memories and let everyone why we have to have some dumb radios.... One word, WALTER(no offense to you). We were having a great time on the 1st. Prime Drive and then we lost Walter. What to do? Did he go home? Did he crash? Should we ALL turn around and look for him? How long should we wait? 27 NSX'ers stopped dead in their tracks. You see where this is going. Everyone needs to be in contact with each other and be aware of upcoming traffic hazards(CHP and or the fuzz, rocks, water, accidents etc.), when and where we are turning or changing directions. We have 9lb. Marc W. in his new M5 donating his time to be the front runner, keeping us up to date on the roads ahead. This is priceless when you have 40 or so NSX's coming around corners obeying all of the laws. If you have never been on a canyon drive, we are not always bumper to bumper, single file. Gaps between cars can have people missing turns and getting lost. Everyone will have a map with mileage and approximate times, so there are usually no issues. Click here for club radio info

This year’s lead / escort vehicle will be an E39 BMW M5 (we needed something fast enough to keep up with the NSX’s and seat 4 people!) :D

We have a high-power club radio lined up for this car already, we just need a spotter and a communications person.

The communications person will sit in the back seat and man the club radio, CHP scanners, and cell phones. This person must be efficient with radio communications systems, be a good talker on the club radio, and have been on at least one prior prime canyon run or canyonball drive so as to be familiar with the way the event is run. Preference is also given to the applicant who has a Nextel phone, as we will have a fallback Nextel DirectConnect net set up with the end car for those inevitable times when we fall out of club radio range in the canyons.

The spotter will sit up in the passenger seat and use a pair of binoculars (a la cannonball run) as well as their unaided vision to scan for (shall we say) hazards in the distance.

Both applicants must be able to avoid getting carsick in the canyons while performing their duties and should be club members. If interested, please submit your applications to ANYTIME. He can answer any further questions regarding these volunteer positions. He and I will review the applications for these positions and make our decisions prior to the event.

Ilya (last year's escort driver) gets first dibs on either position!

From the initial plans already in the works, this will likely shape up to be the best Prime Canyon drive ever, and at the rate signups are going, all remaining slots will be filled before the end of the week.
