According to this article it seems there's a vulnerability of older Japanese cars:

Since January, police said, Moreno had been stealing Toyota Camrys and Nissan Sentras by using a simple device that starts Japanese cars of a certain age

Anyone know what this simple device is? And how people who own Japanese cars of a certain age can prevent their car from being stolen??

The funniest part of that article is that at the end it says that the girl friend stated to authorities that she had been trying to dump the guy. The guy was stealing cars to get to see her and that was just not enough...

There's nothing you can do to prevent it except an alarm with a kill switch. Also works in Honda Accords, especially the 94-97 generation, the newer ones progressively improved.

from what I know and experienced, a key from a camry would start a different camry/corolla...We tried it and it did work on a family's car...

like these old-school camry's...

Once the ignition lock wore out, my mom's '77 Corolla wagon could be started with a paperclip, screwdriver, ice cream stick...
