Well I just took my ASVAB today, and surprisingly it went ok. I had a day to study because my recruiter rushed me, but i pulled an 80 for the AFQT with my line scores all being pretty decent. My recruiter kept telling me to go for Nuke, but at this point I have no clue. I don't have long to really decide, but thought yall could help me get some jobs in my head that would be good for civilian life and fun in the Navy. I researched Nuke abit and its good pay, but pretty much sucks from the way they put it. Originally planned to go Reserves but if I get a good opportunity in Active I'll take it.

thnx for any advice before hand, off to sleep.

-Chase.

take the most techinicial job possible and listen to the advice above or you will be chipping paint for 4 years. Ive seen it first hand while training for something better. Id feel a whole lot better knowing i nuked a stupid country and made the world a safer place. or you can ignore the advice and get out after 4 years and be a professional painter.

Go nuc. I joined. I ONLY wanted nuc mm or SWCC. Butim partially colorblind so I can't do any.... So here I am. Do whatever makes you happy. Maybe you'll like being a postal clerk for 4 years. In the end... Nacvy training isn't shit in the real world. But navy decipline will get you a lot.

Biut take this with a grain of salt... Cause I was only in for 29 days before getting kicked out

Anything technically challenging and/or elite!

I'm in the army. If I could enlist all over again, I would do Special Forces in a heart beat. If you're up for the challenge, go for SEALs.

I'd go nuke. I work at a Nuclear power plant and they love to hire the Navy nuke guys for auxiliary operators and reactor operators. They make very good money. Of course, no one wants to go to a job they hate everyday. So Get a description on some of jobs you think you might like doing and go from there. Good luck.

Oh man, I went down to Corronado Naval Base and tried the SEALs obsticle course... that thing is SOOOOO freaking hard. None of us could pass it (all seal DEPers and me... SWCC wannabe) And we got to watch the SEAL student train.. .hardcore man! Anybody that even TRIES that gets a thumbs up from me. I wish I could.. stupid eyes.

thnx for all the replies. So far I've been looking at Electronic Technician, Electronic Warfare Technician, and Nuke. I need to check more of the jobs on the site as my recruiter only gave me a book that had just a small list of jobs. Also anyone have any advice about going overseas and having a family?

Back in the day I too took the ASVAB and didn't superbly on it.
I actually wanted to be one of those guys on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. However, I wasn't accepted thru MEPS due to physical defect.:frown: I really wanted then and still do want to serve my country in some fashion.
I had a real good friend that was what I considered a genuis in math. He went thru bootcamp and then went to nuke school and he got discharged shortly thereafter. He said he thought he was smart until they gave him some math problems to figure out and he was completely floored.
Good luck in your choice.

Your recruiter SUCKS and find a new one. Where do you live?

I am a nuke. If you have any questions, pm me. I'll give you the skinny.

After 18 years in the Canadian Navy, I'll try to offer some general advice.

1. Recruitters have trade quotas. They know what the Navy is short on and what it needs. They'll push you towards those trades based on your scores. ie smart guy & we need nuke crew = tell him to go nuke.

2. Get the technical trade that is most transferable to civie street down the road. If you learn a trade that has no use outside the Navy, your kinda stuck.

3. Look at how each trade is employed. Are you getting into something that will keep you at sea for months on end, with little chance to see your family? Or something that is land locked and you never get to go to sea. All the adventure sounds fun, and it is for 4-5 years, then you just want to spend time with your wife and kids (if you have them).

4. Also consider your own personality. Are you good with stress? Are you more laid back? There's trades to match.

Now, go catch the breezes on the big ships!

PS. To the army guys, here's why he's joining the Navy...

thnx for all the advice yall guys gave me. Finally got enlisted today, on the DEP until 12/30/08 and then I will be shipping out. Decided to go Active and my job is Operation Specialist, which branches out to Intelligence or Navigation If I pursue It as a career. Was hoping for a sign on bonus so I could put an emergency fund away for the family and start getting a good start on saving for my NSX but I won't be getting one :frown:. It sounds like a really cool job and It's 60% sea 40% land based, and It's only a 4 yr term. After the 4 years I can go Reserve and with choosing this job, they will pay me $450 a month up to 36 months for college, which I could just use the GI Bill and will get to pocket that money for saving . Just wanted to thank yall for the advice and let yall know what I picked If anyone was curious.

Whatever you do, don't go Operations Specialist. Just kidding since that is where you appear to be going. OS can be great, can turn you into a spook after your hitch. As you note, it is intelligence so the emphasis is thinking and understanding, not as much technical training as some of the other rates.

If you are going to be stationed out of Yokosuka or Hawaii, pick USS Topeka to ride during a mission. Our boat is very nice and courteous to spooks. All those who ride us usually tell us horror stories of other boats. We're all stuck underwater with nothing to do but stand watch and burn flicks. Why make it harder for someone else??? Either way, east or west, try not to piss off any A-gangers. They will destroy you. And if you have the guts, "ring the bell," and be ready for an @$$ whoopin.

Good luck in your choice.

I recall my first test (Ground School basic jet). I missed 2 questions out of 50...FANTASTIC considering my engineering school grades...BUT the AVERAGE flight student missed 0.5 questions out of 50 so (with the curve) I was 4 times BELOW average (a miserable failure)!

I am an Electronics Technician, best job in the Navy...go for it.

IMO just get any technical job you can get your hands on...
