loose steering...help

My steering seems loose, it has about a centimeter or each way free play before the steering moves the wheels. Any ideas what this could be caused by and how to fix it?

I think the manual says 5mm of play is service limit.

Perhaps your steering rack or the balljoints on the rod ends are worn.
