My very first 1/4 mile run

On Wednesday at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, I made my first run at a 1/4 mile ever. I think for a first time run, it wasn't bad although it appears that I have a lot of room for improvement. My reaction time was terrible and the 0-60' time was slow. Here is my very first run ever; I'm the car on the right:

Special thanks to Factor X for helping me. I did have a run with 120 mph trap speed, so once I get a little more practice, I'll be able to break into the 11's!

Though I'm no drag expert, I'd think that w/ a little practice 11's would be no problem at all. If it's any consolation, I did 2 sec 60ft times as well.:frown:

Did you get any wheel hop or any launch issues w/ that much torque?

Thats a nice run. what are you sing for tires and what RPM did you launch at? were you power shifting?

Nice numbers, with a little practice thats a 11 second car all day long.

I would like to know this too! What did they line you up with, a honda civic? At the drags here they make an attempt to match you up with someone of similar caliber.

So when you go, do they have to find a 15 year old schoolgirl out of the crowd for you or do they think you know how to drive?

2 years ago I got smoked by a CRX:frown:

I had some BFG g-force T/A drag radials that were on loan from Factor X. However, the track was in awesome condition and the car stuck pretty well. I launched at about 4k rpm and bogged the first gear a little but took off after that. I didn't power shift my first run (hence the lower trap speed) because my instinct of babying my car took over, so I actually let off the gas and fell out of boost. Mikey ribbed me a little for being such a pansy.

I was paired up with some mustang, but that's because at the Las Vegas motor speedway they have this thing called Street Wars/Midnight Meyham, where you pay $20 and you just get as many runs in as you can. There is no rhyme or reason to who you get paired up with, unless you specifically request someone. It's just more for fun, and they put it in place to encourage people to drag at the strip rather than the streets. It's a pretty cool idea; make it easy to do 1/4 mile runs easily, accurately and legal and you get less illegal street racing.

My car is stock, but I got about 100 stickers and neon lights all over my car. I figure I get aobut 2 hp boost from each. Oh yeah, a Factor X FX500 somewhere in there. I think they stuck it in my glove compartment. Here was my latest dyno prior to the run:

You bogged at 4K? so are you going higher next time? So let me get this straight... rev to 4K+, dump the clutch... have the drivetrain take the strain between the engine's torque and drag radials, and then power shift the rest of the way? Aren't you worried you will break something? Seems drag radials would put a lot of stress on the drivetrain... and the clutch.... oooh you are a brave man.

It didn't totally bog, just a little. And yes, it's putting A LOT of strain on the drivetrain and tranny. The RPS clutch is ok and the core is meant to be replaced. I know it's not good but the NSX can handle it for while. Mikey was saying the FX's tranny lasted about 4 years and he really beat the crap out of it. I don't mind if something breaks. It gives me the excuse to put in a stronger part. Right now I think my tranny is the weak link so I'll probably grind it up within a couple of years and replace it with a new cryo'd one.

It's funny you pointed out my numb-nuttiness as I hadn't thought about it until now. If my car was brand new and cherry, I probably wouldn't have taken it out to the drag strip. But my car is 17 years old, has 150,00 miles on it, chip marks, dings, swirls, stains etc. If something breaks, I know it was my weak spot, and I fix it with something stronger. Eventually the car will be a new car since everything will be a new replaced part and I will baby the heck out of it. Like my exterior, I don't care if it gets scratched or even dinged because I've got an entire widebody kit ready to replace it and be re-painted anyway. It's funny, it's kind of refreshing because I used to worry and fret over my car and now I can just really drive and enjoy it.

Not bad. Definitely an 11 second car. Might try slipping the clutch a bit and you'd get those 60' times down. Don't worry about reaction time, nobody cares about that unless you're doing a competitive drag. But if you REALLY care about RT, just go on the third yellow. :D

Well done !
Very impressive !

2 sec flat isn't bad at all for your first run at the drag strip. But considering you were on Drag Radials [correct me if I misread your post] and have a fairly light weight mid engine car.. there is certainly room for improvement.

Don't be the least bit discouraged, getting that 2.0 to a 1.6/1.7 is much easier and much cheaper than getting MPH to 117mph. The hard part is already done. Anytime you bring out a 'new' car to the track, it isn't going to be pretty, especially if it's yours and you are the least bit concerned about it. I've seen STI's in the 16's and z06's in the 14's more times than I can count.

I've been to the 1/4 track countless times. I typically go for a 2.0 flat 60 ft in an n/a fwd Honda with street tires, but that's an above average driver's goal. That's all I have a lot of experience drag racing besides sport bikes, which is a completely different scenario.

Keep practicing, and honestly I probably wouldn't be 100% power shifting it either. You can learn ways to manipulate the throttle to keep the boost from completely falling without transferring all the drive train stress without the clutch.
