I'm actually surprised by MB to introduce an all aluminum chassis more than ten years after Audi A8.
Perhaps they have no choice but to do it since the car has ballooned to such a heavy weight.

I believe there are certain laws/benefits in Germany to using as much aluminum (recycling) as possible.
Fleet CO2 emission has to be below 120g/km 2012. Reduce CO2 emission -> reduce fuel consumption -> reduce fuel consumption -> lower weight. You might have noticed they're downsizing displacement already. There is no way the big manufacturer are going to achive 120g/km but by buying and using technology they hope to make the impression they're realy trying, thus maybe reduce the fine.
