So, the 2008 Mt Baker Drive is on.

Date: August 24th - Sunday

Meeting Place: NE 70th Pl park & ride in Kirkland (exit 17). This is located on the east side of I-405.

Time: Park & Ride, departing 7:30am

Cost: $5.00 per car for lodge use, $5.00-$8.00 per car for National Forest Parking fee (estimated)

Weather: As of 08/22/2008 they are predicting PARTLY CLOUDY/RAIN and 73 degrees

Total car count: As of 08/18/2008 - 30

See detailed directions below - we will drive up together but feel free to plan your own time back. We need to be at the lower lodge by 11:30am. Photo ops at the lower lodge only, then driving up to the upper lodge for lunch. The lower lodge is in the process of interior painting, so we can not use it this year. After lunch we will have the opportunity to go to Artist's Point another 4 miles up. This is mainly an NSX/S2000 drive but all are welcome. If you have friends that can respect others and are not wild in group drives, then feel free to invite them. See you at the PARK & RIDE.

7:00am-7:30am Arrive at NE 70th Pl park & ride in Kirkland (exit 17). This is located on the east side of I-405.

7:30am Leave for the Smokey Point rest area (coffee break) on I-5 north bound, set your tripometer to 0 before leaving the P&R. Arrive at rest area located after exit 206 @ mile post 207.
Estimated travel time 35 minutes, tripometer @ 38.9 miles. 20 minute stay.

Leave reast area and head north on I-5, take next exit (#208), turn right and head east on HWY 530 for about 3.5 miles and turn left onto HWY 9 north, tripometer @ 44.2 miles.

When entering the town of Sedro Woolley turn right onto the North Cascade HWY (HWY 20 east), tripometer @ 71.4 miles.

Turn left back onto HWY 9 north @ the intersection of Arco-am/pm and Dairy Queen, tripometer @ 72.7 miles. (Regroup at the school on the right hand side)

Follow HWY 9 north til it intersects with HWY 542, tripometer @ 95.5 miles, at this intersection turn left (heading west) for about a mile. We will enter the casino area from the back and stage parking on HWY 542 (east bound). This will be a place for bathrooms or fuel and to meet the Canadian crew. Please park normally in the stalls, the casino security will stop and tell us to move our cars. It happens every year. 20 minute stay. ATTENTION - this is the Bellingham/Canadian meeting point!

Leave casino and head east on HWY 542 (Mt Baker HWY). Next stop will be 15 miles east of the town of Glacier, tripometer @ 130.1 miles. This is the DOT Hwy garage. 45 minutes from the casino stop. 15 minute stay. Depending on our timing, we may not stop here. If we do not stop at DOT Hwy garage, then it's 1 hour - 1:15 from casino to lodge.

LEAVE DOT Hwy garage and continue about 6 miles to enterance of the White Salmon Lodge parking area. We should arrive at the White Salmon parking area by 11:30, the gate to the parking area is usually closed, but will be open for us between 11:00 and 11:30. It will be important to arrive by these times. The gate will not be open after noon.

There is plenty of parking (paved) at the lodge for photos, we will stay for about 30 minutes then continue up another 3 miles to the 2nd lodge for lunch.

For those attending this drive, I recommend a packed lunch (no food service at lodge during summer months), sodas, water, digital cameras, and cam-corders, hiking boots, sunscreen, windex and papertowels for the bugs on your windshield, and a garbage bag.

This drive will happen rain or shine, be prepared.

If we leave the lodge by 2:30 pm, we should arrive home in the Bellevue area by 5:30pm, some of you may need to adjust your schedules accordingly for your trip home.

*****IMPORTANT NOTE*******
There has been some concerns regarding speeds on this drive, this will be addressed at the park and ride before we leave. I believe we can find a happy medium for everyone. Remember we will stick out like a sore thumb.

The main concern will be to behave ourselves on the Mt Baker Hwy and at the lodge.
We are lucky to have this opportunity (e-mail & thank the g.m. at Mt Baker Ski Area, Duncan Howat and his daughter Gwen) to use the lodge area, since it's usually closed during summer months to the public. I don't want to be a hard ass about this, but please respect this request.

This is not a race event, if those who wanted to drive more spiritly, please stay at the back, heck, you could even sandbag yourself and leave couple minutes after everyone's gone, and play catch up. As stated before, we will stick out like a sore thumb. So if we see any of us driving way too aggressive or even at the point of endangering other motorists please ask them not to if you know them.

I hope everyone enjoys the 2008 Mt Baker Drive!

So how about those of us that are WAY north of you guys :P You're all FINALLY come up this way for once :P

I (and others that may be coming?) are up in Bellingham, where can we meet up?
X2. I'm considering coming to this from Vancouver, BC. It would be convenient to have a meetup point in Bellingham or even closer to me for those who want to cruise down from BC.

Anyone further North should meet us East of Bellingham at the Nooksack Casino on the Mt Baker HWY/HWY 542. I believe the town is Deming, WA. We normally park in the back of the casino (plenty of parking), and gives everyone a chance for fuel/food/restrooms. We should be there by 10:00am. See you there and welcome aboard.

Just in case anybody else is worried about rock chips, in the last 4 years not one person has complained about rock chips. This is with about 300 miles of driving round trip, multiply that by 35-40 cars per year, multiply that by the last 4 years, I think we are ok. The route we take is normally pretty clear.

I was just there last Monday and the roads are great ... paved right to the top.
If you plan to hike at Artist's point be aware it is all snow up there and you will need winter tread (on your shoes) You might wish to throw in a fleece to keep the cool breeze off.

I think you meant Others: guest of Invisiblevision - EVO.

I'll meet you guys at the smokey point rest area. what time do you think you guys will be there so i can be a bit early.

Got home just fine. But that traffic from Mt. Vernon to Everett was crazy.

My wife and I finally gave up on the gridlock and stopped at a Casino.

What was up with that guy in the station wagon who pulled off the highway in the rain to wave a certain finger at us all as we went by? I thought we were all very well-behaved today.

that $#!t was funny. we didn't do anything wrong, he just got mad cause we were trying to pass him. we used our blinkers politely when we passed him, but he still got mad for some reason. oh well.....

We just got home after stopping for dinner at Cafe Veloce (Totem Lake, Kirkland). You must've been there, Chris--lots of (real) racing motorcycles and gear in the restaurant (fabulous Chicken Scampi, too.)
Dean, THANK YOU! Great job as usual! (Please post the email to thank the g.m. at Mt Baker Ski Area, Duncan Howat and his daughter Gwen.)
