Finally took the wife out to dinner in the new car (95nsx).
All was going great untill the drive home, rock hit the
windshield and chip/cracked it.
My question is, When I get it replaced is there any thing to
be aware of? I dont mind paying extra to get a good job.

Thanks
George

I would reccomend trying to have it repaired. I've seen 30" cracks reaired flawlessly, and I've seen some that didn't turn out that good. I heard the key was having it repaired soon before any micro particles of dust and water enter the crack. Your only looking at $25 -$35 for a repair.

I would try having it repaired too. What I've heard is that small chips (smaller than the area of a quarter coin) can be repaired, but longer cracks cannot. Consult with a glass repair specialist. Novus is a franchise that specializes in windshield repair, whom I have used successfully.

At least here it is not recommended to repair a rock chip (repaired or not) in the windshield when this chip is in your main view area (defined by the region the wipers clean). A car with such a chip cannot pass the regular technical examination (also known as TÜV).

If you are going to attempt a repair, do it now. I waited a few weeks before repair on a Honda Accord and dirt had gotten into very tinny rays of the chip. There was a "star burst" effect of minute gray lines after the repair visible from inside of the car. Outside it looked good.

Also you may want to call your insurance company. Typically they will pay the $35 to 45 for the repair even if you have a deductible.

Also you need to seal up the crack so nothing gets inside it. The repair injects resin and it won't work as well if there is debris or water in it. Use clear tape. The faster you get it repaired: the better the results.

If you are lucky it will take an extremely sharp eye to catch the repair. Usually about $50 and they come to your car...so call them up now.

I would replace the windshield if the repair still leaves it visible. I got a new one replaced on my last nsx for $300 installed. I found the company on the web, came right to my house. I watched the whole time though. I didn't want them to damage or scratch anything.

Just got a chip fixed in my windshield. It's in front of the driver, so should probably be replaced eventually. It doesn't look perfect, but looks better than it did with the chip, and it shouldn't spread. The way they fix it is so simple, it makes you want to just by the couple of tools and do the next one yourself. It took all of 10 minutes.

Oh - as well as getting it fixed ASAP, the guy recommended NOT putting a sunshade in the window till it was fixed, because it would stress the glass that much more and make the chip spread.

How big is the "chip/crack"? Personally, I would replace it if it is of any significant size (say, 2" or more). If you choose to replace it be sure to look long and hard at the upper windshield garnish. In many cases it is replaced poorly. I had to have mine done twice by Los Gatos Acura before they got it right.
