This is crazy! Health Care Insurance!

The real problem is not requiring everyone to have insurance the real problem is everyone won't. You can fine people all you want but we all know 50% of the people won't pay the fine and have nothing to take. Just another way we all get to pay for people who won't appreciate it.

I'm just looking forward to there being a new industry group to villify: the greedy, inhumane, Richy Rich doctors! Once the new healthcare plan is in place, and private insurance companies have been driven out of business, the bullseye will be squarely on compensation levels in the healthcare industry.

Welcome to the Greedy Unamerican Capitalist Assholes Club... we're growing rapidly!

I am really getting worried about the direction this country is heading. We are looking more and more like Socialism. The government owns the auto industry, banking industry and now wants to take over healthcare. I for one am glad I did not vote for Obama. What a mistake people made.

I've just read in the newspaper today that up to 50 millons of Americans don't have a health insurance. Some can't, some don't want to buy an insurance.

The story was about a healthy and wealthy family who thought that all went that good in their life that it's not necessary to have a health insurance. Guess how the story goes? Doctor diagnosed xy, in the end they lost everything. Needingless to say that all insurances refused to insure the man after the diagnosis was written. After all the family quoted it having no insurance as their biggest fault ever. In this scenario it's not bad if the government obligates people to a health insurance. And that's not socialism. You also send your kids to school, no?

The US has the highest health system costs worldwide already. But in all European countries it already works more or less. The UK is a very bad example to compare to.

further explanation of what the AMA is...

Some fact-checking needs to put this into perspective:

- Approx. 1/3 of of AMA's existing members are still in medical training and are not practicing medicine

- Overall, the AMA represents less than 20 percent of practicing physicians in the United States. Some have put the number of AMA practicing physician members actually between 130,000 and 140,000 physicians.

In essence, this below is what the aforementioned "endorsement" comes down to...

"So Obama and his advisers also are pursuing a tougher, divide-and-conquer strategy. The idea is to take advantage of the expanding economic rift between primary-care physicians—a group generally open to reform—and highly paid specialists who thrive in the current fee-for-service culture of U.S. medicine."
- Business Week: Why the AMA Will Likely Support Health-Care Reform

With all that said, I do believe there needs to be some fundamental & instrumental changes in our (U.S.) healthcare system, but I'll leave it at that for now. . .

thx for the info / bizweek link... i was just discussing this with a friend a half hour ago, wondering "what's up with this?"... i'm also interested in hearing what my friend the radiologist has to say about it all, but i'm betting i know that already.

Ever heard of personal responsibility? Should the government find a job for you too if you're unemployed? What's the difference between an idiot getting in a car crash without insurance and getting sick without insurance? The difference is one is currently a political ploy and one isn't.

Your example of the family not having insurance and not planning for some need of health care is an example of some stupid people. Many people don't have health insurance, but they take the money that they would pay for insurance and invest it. They figure the odds of them having a catastrophic illness is not too great and they are willing to take that risk up until a certain point. Point being, they may not have health insurance, but they have make other arrangements just in case.

One reason the US has the highest costs for health care is because of our litigious society. It's sport to sue your doctor. To protect themselves, doctors will do every test in the world to protect themselves from being sued. When I worked in health care, our plastic surgeons were sued every week. Sixty year old woman would come in for a face lift, doc would do the surgery and she would look 40. Patient thought she should look 30 and would sue the doctor. When we would get sued, if it was less then $50K it wasn't even worth our while to contact the lawyers. It would cost us more then $50K to go to court. We just paid.

I also read today that CBO has done an analysis of the new programs being proposed by Congress and determined that the plans will NOT save money and will in fact increase government expenditures. Go figure.

We'll have to see what happens...

A prime example of what needs to be corrected to help control healthcare costs.

This bill does nothing to address that problem, which is substantial.

I agree. Our system DOES have issues. Substantial ones at that. However, the current proposition is NOT a solution to the majority of those.

The hospital industry last week agreed to $155 billion in cost savings over 10 years, in a deal reached with the White House and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat.

Im not sure I understand what this means.

By not allowing the free market to drive innovation and patient service, we are assuring ourselves failure.

The current administration is ANTI free market in just about every instance / interpretation of the phrase.

Im not sure I understand what this means.

Because it makes zero sense. No company has to "agree" or be forced to accept cost savings. It's laughable.

I don't have many answers nor revelation from my perspective:redface:All I can tell you is to figure out how or why lawmakers make thier own decisions when aproving or radifying law is based in part from thier own background and education. To my knowledge there are many more lawyers and sons and daughters of very wealthy families that sit in the senate and congress rather than doctors:frown: As Billy said to Dutch in Predator 1 "Major,,,were all gonna die"

They may understand law (many don't), but few understand that which they legislate. Same in my field. When they banned short selling it was counter productive. I won't get into boring detail but when you aren't able to place offers without owning the stock, it lowers liquidity and forces large market purchases to get significantly poorer pricing while mitigating common hedging strategies that allow riskier purchases of stock.

It's disgusting to me that it has to be passed in the next to weeks before their vacation. This tells me Obama thinks it won't pass if it is actually analyzed and debated amoung the public.

I am appalled by this administration.

This whole plan is absolutely crazy! But what would I know I'm just a dumb M.D.

Btw, I love the plan to cut my take home income and then tax me(tax planned on incomes over $250K) even more to pay for other people's health insurance. I employ 20+ people in my clinic right now. I was planning on building a larger clinic, hiring more people etc. but Mr. Obama's health plan has made me change my mind!

There is always work at the post office.

It just suxs. M.D.'s are going to get screwed. I wonder how many M.D.'s would still choose to go to school for 8+ years knowing what they know now.

Going into medicine is not worth the price of admission these days. Furthermore, you used to get a deferment for the entire time you were in a residencey or internship. That has been to reduced to just the first six months after graduating school. Imagine having to immediately start paying back a loan of $250k+ when you may only be making $100k a year.

Well once they knock enough people to the floor they can get their way and finally convince the remaining 20% mediocrity is OK.

I can't wait to get Dr. Lexus to do my physical.

Car insurance is obligatory here in Europe and it's a good thing to have. If you ever get in a crash you're not bankrupt or don't have to sue anyone's money. We also have a long-during driving school education and don't just drive around a few blocks for a license like other continents do. :D

Which point? After you got seriously ill you don't have any choice or is it the choice between the illness and the bullet?

I love the statistic that America spends 2.5x more on healthcare than other industrial nations, but people don't live any longer on average (true).

I also love how the media uses this statistic to support an argument that our healthcare system is flawed/overpriced/etc.

My favorite thing, though, is how Jeremy Clarkson refers to Fat Americans in nearly every Top Gear episode. And 20 million viewers in Europe and Asia laugh because it's true.
