What is APPLE planning?

We will see what happens when Ice Cream Sandwich comes out for the Galaxy Nexus. Right now the dual cores are not being optimized on Gingerbread.

It is my understanding that none of these OS's are really dual core optimized. I think QNX will be the first one. At least that is what I was told.

I'm sure there will be a damnyousiri.com where they will post super hilarious stuff that Siri does.

Siri as a feature will go either of two ways. 1. It will be a neat tech demo for a while, fade from the spotlight, and finally become part of the accessibility features of iOS. Or 2. It will form a platform and have an API that continually gets better and better. It's knowledge base will grow, and a hundred years from now, you'll be asking Siri to plot a course to Alpha Centauri in your warp capable starship.

No use speculating until we try it.

How about this site...

I'm not going to lie, its pretty neat. Neat like talking to a AIM BOT.

Wouldn't it be interesting if they put IBM's Watson as one of the data sources behind Siri? It wouldn't have to answer Jeopardy style with a question but instead just provide straightforward answers. It might be pretty good knowledge base of trivia. Then you could ask things like, "Who was that actor that was in Jaws and wanted a bigger boat?"

Why the iPhone 4S Only Has 512MB of RAM

http://gizmodo.com/5848683/why-iphone-4s-only-has-512-megabytes-of-ram

We'll probably never hear an official justification for why Apple only put 512MB of RAM in the iPhone 4S. But you know what? They don't need one. Because you'll hardly be able to tell. Here's why.
Live Long and Prosper

The more RAM you pack in a device, the more power it uses (at least until the next generation of RAM comes along, then it resets and starts all over again). For decades, power consumption was a secondary concern for gadget hardware and software engineers. They had an unlimited supply of energy piped through a cord. But now that battery-powered devices have become our most vital trinkets, how long that device can live without a recharge doesn't just affect performance—in a lot of ways it is performance. And since they jumped into the smartphone pond feet-first, Apple has made battery life a priority. It's why the first iPhone didn't have 3G, and the reason why the iPhone 4S doesn't have 4G. It's why the iPad 2 also has 512MB of RAM—but still beats the pants off of the burlier competition.

Numbers Ain't Everything

And at this point, we should know better than to freak out about raw specs. Apple's hardware performance mantra has always "more out of less." And they put as much time into optimizing their software as they do the hardware itself. iPhone owners posting in the comments of the Anandtech have reported that legacy iPhones running iOS 5 have actually seen performance gains, most likely because iOS 5 was not as much of an overhaul as iOS 4 was. Apple hasn't just added features; they've also had time to trim the fat and become less resource-intensive. Compare that to the near-crippling effect iOS 4 had on the iPhone 3G.

Insider Knowledge

Yes Apple should not get in the habit of complacency and reactionary moves, but the truth is that their hardware is not middling. Android handset makers need the hardware muscle—a gig of memory is standard issue these days for a top-tier Android phone—because Android is not optimized around a narrow slice of hardware like iOS. They have no idea when Google will push new features and what it will do to their devices. They can only rely on raw power to futureproof their devices. Those Android devices need that gig of RAM as a defensive maneuver. For Apple, it would be an unnecessary luxury.

And while it's hardly the main reason we should grant Apple a pass here, the fact is that building the best device for the least amount of money is why Apple can stay lean and focused on high-quality products in the future. Doubling the RAM might not cost that much in any single device. But compounded across millions of devices, that's a lot of money that could be better spent on R&D, especially if that 512MB of RAM is still suitable for another generation (which it seems to be).

So yes, the iPhone 4S has less memory than the next guy. But the smart money says you're not ever going to notice. And that's quite a trick.
Pretty impressive to me.

Good write-up. Of course many pseudo-techie types just love to shop by reading and comparing spec sheets. Oooh...This computer has a clock speed that's 500Mhz faster.

It's just like cars. You can compare specs and find two cars with near identical spec numbers but in reality the cars could be as different as night and day when it comes to actually driving.

In general, I agree with you because it's the end-experience that counts, not some spec, BUT in this specific case I think Apple cheaped out on the wrong component. They have double the pixel density of everyone else (ie textures take 4x the memory to store), and a powerful GPU that can take advantage of the resolution, which means that developers are going to be pushing this thing hard and very quickly running out of on-chip memory and paging.

Since they sold 4 million 4S phones - I'm guessing it's Monday morning teething pains. Seems like all is OK now.

I doubt if they'll have to give free apps to their customers.

My mom said if I don't have anything nice to say about you, then don't say it.

I can always come back to this thread for a good laugh. So much time spent trying to justify a piece of Apple hardware. I think it was best said, "Even you Mom can use it." True dat. LOL!

Yep, my Siri has been down most of the day today. It says "having trouble connecting to the network". When it works, it is just awesome, but having some growing pains I guess. :( Considering it is the biggest cool feature of the new phone, they are ALL over it.

Nah, not a hater. I LOVE the aftermarket support and products that Apple receives, almost enough to make me switch. Android gets no love thanks to their lack of uniformity and ridiculous allowance for diversification. But you guys are spending a little too much time justifying your love for the 4S. They should have called it the 4Siri because that is all it is. If you can wait, get the 5. This 4s is 4suckers. In 6 months it will be a relic.

I don't think it's justifying so much as excitement and enjoyment.

Integration of iOS with their regular OS. Imagine their upcoming lap tops with a touch screen and is able to share apps with their portable devices.
