I was speaking to a customs broker today and learnt that under the FTA with USA, products manufactured there and imported to Australia are free from duty. Yes thats 0% !

All you need to do is state "manufactured in USA" on the customs declaration (in the comments section at least).

Not every part in an imported kit / assembly needs to be manufactured in USA to qualify, as long as there is some US manufacture to create the product. But if the product is simply imported from Japan to US, then exported to Australia with no manufacture activity, it's not exempt.

Also if you've paid duty in last 4 years for any imports falling into above category you can request a refund.

This advice came from the customs broker I am now using: http://www.auspostcustoms.com.au/
(only $55 brokerage fee)

Unfortunately we still have to pay GST and expensive freight!

PS: By far best way to import is via the good old US Postal Service (USPS) ... http://www.usps.com/. (I think this is also know as, or is a least related to EMS = international Express Mail Service). The only hassle is they have max weight and size limits. If package is above these it seems there's no choice but to use super expensive freight companies, like UPS or DB Schenker.
