Got my new custom (Angus) exhaust... My quick review and a couple of flyby vids!

I ordered the custom exhaust that NSXPrime member Angus has been selling about a week and a half ago and managed to get it installed on Friday night. First and foremost, the exhaust in question can be seen here.

Wil has always provided great communication and shipped the exhaust in a very speedy fashion. It was packaged well and was everything advertised! The quality of the exhaust seems top notch. Compared to other quality, name brand exhausts that I've seen for NSXs, it was right on par. There were absolutely zero fitment issues and the install was very straight forward. I didn't get the opportunity to weigh the two exhausts, but just from holding the two back-to-back, I would anticipate a savings of 10-15 lbs.

The sound... The sound is fantastic. I've heard a few NSX exhausts in person now--Taitec GTLWs, Comptechs, Flowmasters... this one beats them all in my opinion. It's quiet when I need it to be quiet, but absolutely screams when I'm on it. Videos don't do it justice, but the noise out the back of this thing is enough to make any car guy grin from ear to ear. Another thing I REALLY like about it is that it's not loud all the time. When I'm not on it, its relatively quiet and livable, but when I want to hammer it... it immediately responds with a symphony of power. :D

Here are a few pics from the install... I put on my new NSX-R Honda badge as well.

The funny thing about this pic is that's not even me under the car :D

Now for the vids! I took two separate sets of videos before and after the install in the same location to try and provide a direct comparison of what the car sounded like with stock exhaust versus the Angus exhaust. The only other mod my car has is a Cantrell AIS with Unifilter. To provide some additional comparisons, we also filmed similar videos with two other NSXs, one with a Taitec GTLW and Cantrell Headers and one with a custom Flowmaster exhaust with Comptech Headers. If you're interested in seeing the additional videos, you can see them here. For whatever reason, on day two the camera had a bit of trouble focusing... not sure if it was operator error or if it was just the overcast weather and the fact that it was a bit darker today, but here are the direct comparison videos, though:

Angus 3... the batteries in the camera died halfway through this clip unfortunately:

Here's an additional video that my buddy filmed before we "officially" started the videos.. I was telling him he should film from the other side. The best thing is you get a great view of a Silverado!

In all reality, this is a good video to hear partial throttle in the car
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/U1VIdE3Sxx4&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/U1VIdE3Sxx4&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

This is honestly probably my favorite video. It's from a standing start. I'm not sure why the car stuttered when I first took off... it did it twice today, but has never done it before. I just chalked it up to the lousy cold conditions.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oYoTM0jd9_A&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oYoTM0jd9_A&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Here's a view from the inside. I let my buddy who has the red NSX (Zipy is his username) referenced in the other thread drive my car so I could hear it from the outside:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ovL_q-3r9wY&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ovL_q-3r9wY&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Lastly, a video of me approaching partial throttle and pulling her in...
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WHiG7QtFtGA&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WHiG7QtFtGA&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Overall, I'm THRILLED with the exhaust. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a non-raspy alternative to the GT-One. The fact that it's considerably cheaper than pretty much all of the high-pitch alternatives makes this exhaust a no brainer in my opinion. If you're looking for something different for your NSX... You should probably PM Angus and get the ball rolling. :)

I will be dyno'ing the car just as soon as the Kansas City weather allows as well. Unfortunately, it looks like snow is forecast in the coming weeks, so it may be a while before the car actually gets on the rollers... I'll be looking to improve on my previous dyno of 258 rwhp and 198 rwtq.

Great sound clips!

Is that an HKS exhaust you took off? I can't tell too well from the angle but it looks like an HKS exhaust from the little I can see. Only reason I ask is because that may not be a stock exhaust you're using in your comparo vid ;). I'm eager to know.

It had the stock tips and what not and the rest of the car was bone stock when I got it, so I can only assume that it's stock.

That Angus exhaust sounds great. As ryu mentioned, it looks like the exhaust you took off was an HKS, not a stock exhaust. The muffler you took off looks just like mine.

Absolute sound improvemment, especially at high RPM's and downshifts. The sound of high rev's is what gets my attention and makes me want to drive/ride every time I hear them. Nice.

I was thinking to myself... that "stock" exhaust doesn't sound that bad. haha.. it actually sounds good for a quiet exhaust.

Regardless, hoping Enigma can verify if it's HKS so we have some good reference points for Angus' exhaust.

Excellent videos, man! Thanks for posting the comparisons. That exhaust sounds great... if I hadn't just got a different exhaust I would seriously consider it. It's always nice to have choices in the market!

You mentioned that the car was stuttering a couple times... I was curious, have you ever had your main relay replaced? My 98 stuttered a couple times, similar to your video, then a few days later my main relay died. Anyway, just throwing it out there... would hate to see a fellow NSX'er get stranded

Do you have any pics of your exhaust by chance? After doing some research, it looks like you guys may be right... I may not have had a stock exhaust after all! Which is sort of an added bonus because if its actually an HKS, that means I could potentially sell it for a decent amount of money. :D

Here's another pic:

pete,

how far does the tips protrude out? from the pic of the guy underneath it looks like it sticks out more than stock?

BTW-I'm currently developing some stuff if you want to see them when i'm done.

Looks nice a bit like an Anytime exhaust.

Cheers,

It sticks out a little more than stock. It's about the same as my buddy's Taitec GTLW. I think if I had an 02 rear valence, it'd fit perfectly.

And what sort of "Stuff" are you referring to? :D
