is there any hard toppers out there interested in converting their hard top to a targa.........just wondering if it has been done and need to know the pos and neg of the process besides the obvious. anyone interested in doing this or has done it let me know. thanks

Are you talking about converting an NSX to a Porsche? Because Targa is a Porsche trademark. And you would have to change a lot of body panels to make an NSX look that ugly. :D

If you're talking about cutting the roof panel off an NSX to convert it to an NSX-T, that would be pretty darn foolish, especially now that the prices of the '95-96 NSX-T have come down a bit over the past few years. But hey, it's your car - if you would prefer to spend thousands of dollars trashing your car and making it worth less than when you started out, instead of simply selling it and buying a real NSX-T - be my guest!

Listen, we all know what is meant by targa, and we understand it is a Porsche trademark. But your continuous banter about an NSX-T is not a targa, is foolish. Refer to tissue as Kleenex should sound familiar. Targa cannot be used on legal terms for Honda only, but we can refer to it as a targa-top. Understand the origin of a definition. The targa top design just happened to be used by Porsche first, hence defining the term. We now use is categorically for this type of design. We don’t go around saying ‘T’ because it could mean many things. We do, however, spout off ‘targa’ and are understood.

Thom, did you realise there is a green face after his comment??
Lighten up, will you??

nsxrm, I do agree that it's a waste of money to spend thousands of dollars to a convert a coupe to a T. If you also read about the nsx materials, T is not just a chopped top. There's a lot more engineering into it. If you must have open top, trade up a newer T would be wise. Last time I checked, the T is heavier and less stiff than the coupe. So if a slower and more expensive T is your choice, go ahead. ;) (Disclaimer: I don't even drive with windows down, so I'm extremely biased.)

I'm sure Thom intended his entire post - feigned outrage and all - to be taken as an April Fool's Day joke, too. ;)

Definitely sell yours and by a TARGA.....YES I SAID IT......TARGA......WHAT THE HELL ELSE DOES THE "T" STAND FOR???????

Really though. What does the "T" stand for? I am one of the ignorant ones who though it stood for "targa."

T stands for "tan" which is what you become when driving with the "T op" off!!

All hope is not lost. This thread can be turned into something interesting..
I will start with the ones that have already been stated here and the ones I know.

Trademark names used to describe a particular product.

1) Targa = removable roof
3) Kleenex = facial tissue
2) Xerox = photocopy
3) Jacuzzi = whirlpool spa

Escalator was a trademark held by the company that made the original .. um.. moving stairway.

i know a few prime members are out there who have done this conversion.................any input on the idea?

There are? I don't recall reading about anyone who has done this. The only mention I've seen was for a car for sale on eBay that had done this. And the prices of the bids were much lower than the car would be worth with the original roof.

I was not vociferously frothing at the mouth when writing this comment. The intent was not to harm ridicule or defame. It seems that every time someone mentions targa in regards to the NSX a debating comment is made that it is not a targa. It is sometimes annoying. I do realize looking back that the post meant to point to the ridiculous action of cutting up the NSX to make it a TARGA, which I agree it would be a waste of money, plus it would waste a race worthy coupe, and jokingly hacking at Porsche. I genuinely apologize.

Thom....IMO you don't need to apoligize. I didn't see your comments as anything more then your annoyance with the Targa issue. When I read nsxtasy's post, I felt the same way. IT"S A TARGA TOP....

And actually, I feel lately you (nsxtasy) have been a bit harsh with your posts....

"But hey, it's your car - if you would prefer to spend thousands of dollars trashing your car and making it worth less than when you started out, instead of simply selling it and buying a real NSX-T - be my guest!"

It's pretty sad when someone just has a question about something and your reply is as if they are doing this to your car.

It's also sad that how predictable some members are when a particular topic is brought up.....pbassjo hit the nail on the head with his picture!!

Sorry NSXRM.... my thoughts on your questions is that it's not worth loosing the structural intergrity of your car for the topless enjoyment. They would need to add more support then a normal Targa NSX (because they would not be able to access the factory support points as easily) and I believe the car would not have the solid feel like a factory NSX-T has...... I would also think there would be issues with rollover safety too....

This is one issue where I would agree with buying a different car...upgrading to a NSX-T would be a better way to go.

T = ?

Because Targa is a Porsche trademark.

What does the "T" in NSX-T stand for?

Toupe!

Hey, here's a perfect example of "the pot calling the kettle black". Look at this nonsense! First he goes off attacking me for criticizing the idea of cutting the roof off his car:

And then he goes and makes his own criticism of the idea:

Talk about "pretty sad"... it's pretty sad when someone is so intent on attacking someone that they do so and then go on to make the exact same comment. It just shows how that attack is based on some personal attitude, and not on any disagreement with what was said. To have some kind of vendetta (against someone you've never met) that makes you so intent on attacking someone is pretty sad, indeed.

It doesn't "stand for" anything. That's what they decided to name the model. You could guess at a lot of things the letter T could stand for - Top, or Thom, or Toyota, or anything else you want to guess. But the simple fact is, unless it is announced to stand for anything specific, it doesn't.

They named it the NSX-T. That's its name. It's not called a 911 Targa. It's called the NSX-T.

I personally always thought it stood for "Targa". I didn't know that was a P-car trademark.
