I've noticed that insuring my 91 NSX has been steadily rising the last couple of years. Anyone else notice this? I was told the insurance risk rating is 26. Whatever that means.

Three years ago I was paying $284/6mo for $50k/$100k comprehensive with $500 deductible through Geico. I got my renewal notice in the mail this month and it is for $528/6mo. WTH?

So I called around.

GMAC won't insure it at all.

Progressive wanted $424.

Now bear in mind, I have no tickets, no accidents and nearly every discount they offer. Multi car, five year safe driver, home owner, married, etc.

So I decided to post this thread.

Who are you with? How much are you paying? Anyone using a collector insurance like Hagerty?

I got a quote from Hagerty on the 2001 I just purchased and they came in at around 8-900 for the year. Not too bad but I hunted around a bit and was happy with the results. My wife and I have a 92 Sunburst yellow Miata that we insure with Sneed and it was a tick over 200 a year. I called them up and asked for a quote on the NSX and was pleasantly surprised when they came back with a quote in the mid 500 range for the year. I insured both the Miata and the NSX for just a bit under 800. There is a mileage restriction of 5k a year but I'll be way below that anyway. Look into Sneed. Really great to deal with on the phone (I dealt with a woman named Erika). Never had a claim through them (knock on wood) so I don't know how they are that way.

Other people's rates have no relation to yours. Rates are determined by your location, demographics, claims/accident history, etc.

Try getting quotes from a variety of insurance companies through Insweb.com or Insure.com.

And check Consumer Reports and JD Power for satisfaction ratings. You don't necessarily want to buy the cheapest, only to find out that there are problems in the event you have a claim.

(My rates have not been going up.)

My rates haven't gone up. I use USAA. Great company.

sorry, but hasn't this subject been discussed soooooo many times?

Did a search and it brought up 20 threads that held no useful information.

Thanks for posting though.

The real question for me is to use "regular
insurance (aka; actual cash value") or a "stated amount" policy. I have mine on Geico, with an incredibly attractive rate, but what will they pay me if it is stolen or totaled?? Not what I paid for it I suspect (as it is a pristine original low mileage rare vehicle). So, a "stated amount" policy might be better, but those tend to have mileage and other usage restrictions on them.

I want to be able to drive the car as I want, but worry about the loss I might take if something bad happened to the car.

Thoughts??? Jay

I just got my bill yesterday so the answer is fresh:
I insure my 69 Mustang and my 95 NSX with a Met Life on collector's agreed value policy; 10K Stang & 30K NSX, mileage capped at 2,500 mi/ year.
No tix (electronic countermeasures ), no accidents since 1985.
$540.00 for full year.

Face it guys, the mix of who owns the NSX has been changing and is now firmly not the same as it was 10 years ago. Since the price of used NSX's came down and has made the car more affordable to younger guys, many looking at the NSX as relatively cheap thrills, it has shifted from being generally cheaper to insure than a Civic or Integra to now being in the same risk category. How many NSX's do we know have been wrecked in the last 5 years compared to the previous 10? I don't have the answers but I bet at least double. And please, no flames from those of you 40 and below, I'm not bashing you, just pointing out that insurance rates are, in general, based upon statistics. I have two sons in their twenties and I have seen their driving change over the years. My insurance is about $250.00/6 mo. and I have performance cars besides my NSX but I'm older and have all the discounts I can get. My insurance also said they would not cover any driver under 25, which includes one of my sons. I've let both drive the NSX with me along, but still have reservations about letting either of my boys take any of my high performance stuff out without me, although I am starting to modify my position as I see them becoming more responsible, since I let them use my stuff once and caught them doing exactly what I asked them not to do. My position is if you cant repair it or afford to have someone else do it, then you don't get to risk what you can't cover.
The cars just aren't being used the same way as the original doctor, lawyer, engineer crowd did and along with insurance in general being more expensive, I think that's why prices have gone up, especially for younger owners.

Actually, it's not all that different. There were plenty of young folks picking up early NSXs for $30Kish ten years ago and more. Even in the early days of the e-mail list which preceded these forums, in the mid 1990s, there were many young owners, many in their twenties and some in their teens. And not all were wealthy, either.

How many NSX's do we know have been wrecked in the last 5 years compared to the previous 10? I don't have the answers but I bet at least double.
I'll take that bet. In fact, I bet the number that have been wrecked in the last 5 years is less than half that of the previous 10.

Sorry, but your claims are totally out of line with what's really going on in the world of NSXs. Remember, some of us have been around for that entire period (and longer) and remember very well what it was like. I'm not saying that the owner base hasn't skewed slightly downward in terms of income and age; it has. But it has not drastically affected what's going on in the NSX world the way you claim.

And today, just like ten years ago and more, young NSX owners are paying higher insurance rates than older ones. That's why a poll on what people are paying is meaningless; you need to look up rates applicable specifically to YOUR OWN situation, not someone else's.

We have a socialist provincial government and car insurance can only be purchased from MPI (Manitoba Public Insurance). I have 25 years of no claims and accident free driving and I am insuring it as pleasure car (I have a 2008 Honda Fit as my daily driver) and my quote is about $1300 (and that is with a 25% discount).

I've had USAA for 20 years and my insurance was overpriced for my NSX. I was paying $98/mo for full coverage, 100/300, 100k damage coverage, $1000 ded. I got a quote from Grundy's for the same coverage, $0 ded, stated value at $30k, no mileage restrictions but I can't drive it to work. Total is $452/yr. I saved over 50% and I'm still using the car as I did before on the which is on the weekends only.

FYI: most major insurers also use credit to rate your "risk" as a potential customer. (Unless you live in CA or WV :) ).

Insurance is also state-regulated, and your rate is determined by an algorithm containing literally thousands of possible variables, so as nsxtasy stated, there is little value to be gained from simply comparing what you pay unless someone happens to pipe up who is your doppelganger and lives on the same street.

As suggested, shop around. All companies are constantly modifying their rating models so the cheapest company last year may not be the cheapest this year. If you have a crap record look at Geico & Progressive first (Progressive will also compare rates). If your record is clean and your credit is decent you pretty much have your choice.

Also, to the OP: $50k/$100k is probably a bit light unless your personal assets are less than $50k total (not likely I'd imagine). Typically the increase in cost is very little to probably double or triple those limits.

That liability coverage is your cover-my-ass protection in case you rear-end a car full of unemployed lawyers.

Unless it's specifically stated, most companies will cover your car on Actual-Cash-Value (depreciated "book") value. There may be some room to argue for indemnification (i.e. returning you to your financial situation prior to your loss) and get more than ACV for the car, but it would not behoove you to count on that. If you don't drive it much, you might prefer an agreed-value policy from Hagerty, Grundy, etc.

Do we really need yet another "how much do you pay for insurance" topic? Come on, folks - this has been discussed here many times before. We already have way too many such topics as it is, and anyone can check the numbers posted in them by clicking on these links:

Finally, to quote Mr. nsxtasy:

"Rates are going to vary depending on company, state, town, age, driving record, coverages and limits, etc.

There's a very easy way to find out how much it will cost for you to insure an NSX. Just call your insurance company and ask. They can tell you, even without you having to buy the car. Or you can check an online service such as http://www.insweb.com"

Finally!!! The return of Forums Nazi!!!!! YESSSS!!!

Nice:eek: the "nazi" is back........prime is starting to feel like old times:smile:

i really don't mind if its been discussed before. especially on topics that change from year to year. ie gas prices. Anyways I found geico to be really higher than everyone, with progressive in CA mine is like ~$500/6 months and that's with a completly smushed car 3 years ago and > age 25. It also changes pretty drastically when you tell them estimated mileage if it's not a DD.

I had State Farm until recently for $50 a month. I sent in pics when I put on new parts (sc, exhaust, etc) so I would get credit in the event of severe accident or theft. I believe it was categorized as "showcar" or "collector" - something like that. Make sure you ask so your mods will lumped into the total value.

You've got a supercharger now?

Who cares? Ask away friends....this is what the entire site is for!

Dude....you have way too much time on your hands to bother searching for all of these threads, opening all of these threads, reading all of these threads, copying all of these threads, pasting all of the threads, writing your comments and then sending them in, only to make a point????

Go read a book to your kids or grandkids, or better yet, go volunteer at a food service or soup kitchen. You'd be amazed how much better you will feel about yourself after helping someone who is in dire straights vs. making an insignificant point to someone you have most likely never met on this website!

I do like your screename though,....I loved that episode of Jerry Steinfeld!

Oh, no! Not again!!!

Try www.esurance.com or another one of those shop around for the best rates sites. Your phone will probably ring off the hook for the next 2 hrs after your submission. Do not sign up with any of them immediately as they will try to close the transaction and ask them to send you a quote by email so you could review. This way you will be able to review multiple quotes and then make the best decision.

I did this and my coverage is:
Company: Travelers
Cost: $275 per 6 months
Coverage: 100k/300k full coverage w/ $50 deducible + $15k in mods
Driver: 29M, single, no point on record
Mileage: 0-5k per yr
Only vehicle, but received small discount with condo insurance
Location: Nashville, TN
