Saw someone get taken to the cleaners at a Toyota dealership today

why does it cost more to get your car fixed at a dealership then say a "honda/acura" specialist?

i'm not asking to start a war with you, ive read your posts for awhile now and i usually share your views on a lot of topics. I'm asking because i want to know what you, at a dealership, do different. is it for warranty purposes?? because my 1994 accord doesn't have a warranty.


people like you piss me off...yeah yeah your job is so hard but don't go bashing some guy who's trying to help another person. if his remedy works, then thats great. saved the guy $313 or a very expensive meal :wink:. don't start throwing blows because his topic hits close to home!

my 1994 accord when cold drives really funny, but when warmed up it's great. ill step on the gas and it hesitates, rpms climb jittery. the dealer has changed spark plugs, distributer, distributer cap. I paid for all that shit and guess what..after a couple of days it's doing the same thing. why should i pay for all the stuff and diagnosis time if they didnt fix the f-ing problem in the first place.

I don't know a lot about how to fix cars but i know when i'm getting shafted!

Why does Coke costs more at Disney World than Local Walmart?
Dealerships have extensive investment and needs to recoup it through higher prices, some independent shops can be just as high as dealerships. The local competition will provide how much any one can charge. If you don't like the prices, then go elsewhere. Just don't complain if it is not the same.

This is a miscommunication between you and the service advisor. He may suggest starting with ignition tune-up and with a good known baseline, other area of trouble may be diagnosed.

69...right! haha My 93 is not a turbo, but this is actually a good thing for me, as it is my daily driver...winter and all. I love it. I used to have a 91, bought a Spyder, then found the 93 and I could not pass it up. I bought it in Maryland with 12,200 miles on it 3 years ago from the original owner. They really are great cars. I have been in a couple of turbos and heavily modified turbos at meets over the years, and lets just say they are more than capable of giving the NSX a run for its money. But, the two cars are in a different league, thus, I bought an NSX. I have Tein Coilovers, aftermarket wheels, stereo, 94+ taillight conversion, custom leather interior and a few other things, but not much.
 
This reminds me of the time I was at Island Acura, and another NSX was in there to have all the Bose amps replaced. I cringed at the very thought, it must've cost the poor bastard nearly 2 grand. Oh well, knowledge is power. Acquire as much as you can.

The Dealer's Labor rate is more than most Independents so that's 15-20$ per hour less at an Independent...Also Dealers have to buy their parts from the Manufacturer the represent.....I do not work for a dealer at this time and we can buy japanese made parts from the same companies that make the parts for toyota and nissan, honda ect at a much lower cost...

As for your Honda sounds like a fuel delivery problem as your car needs more fuel when It's cold, I would be attaching a fuel pressure gauge and watching it while the symptom occurs...

I would also look for a vacume leak at the intake manifold that as the motor warms up the metal expands and seals the leak...

If your car needed Tune parts anyway than you really didn't get Screwed by getting them put on in an attempt to make your car run better..JZ
 
Some guy I know got taken to the cleaners by a brothel. They charged him $100 for an HJ. I even saw the receipt... some of the ink was smeared but still legible. I told him all he had to do was get some hand lotion ($3) and a Victoria's Secret catalog ($0) and D-I-Y.

knowledge is power indeed.

you may be able to clean your pipes with some hand lotion ...but most people would sooner attempt open heart surgery than try to clean their own pipes ...also most hand lotions contain solvents that melt plastic and ruin your other parts....guess what? your getting a new one anyway!!!...cleaning should be done with less caustic KY Jelly.

Like zahntech mentioned, a simple repair only seem simple because the techs' vast experience. The best techs make any repair look easy. The diagnosis time is hard for most people to understand, let alone pay for it, but a DIY'er like you will always be relectant to pay because you think if xxx act like yyy, and zzz fixes yyy, then xxx will always be fixed by zzz. This mentality is the worst trait for any technician,but it is human nature. Most experience techs like zahntech and myself were like that in our younger and dumber days, As we get older and wiser; we learn to keep an open mind to auto repairs. I hope you realize that the alignment you had done can be completed in under 20 min. and it is not a rip-off to you.

The tech probably knew what the problem was. But I think he had to look into other possbilities to ensure that everything else that can cause the problem is in working order before telling the customer that he has only one problem that is causing the symptom.
As a radiologist, we don't stop looking just because we found one tumor. We have to look for othersif present.
I think a better advice for that other Toyota customer is to tell him about the forum that you visit and educate him how to find answers to his car problem. Let him decide if it is worth his time to do the search.
 
My goodness I hope we can't draw too many parallels between diagnosing the health of people and that of cars! I have the utmost respect for those who do well in both professions, but people's lives are much more important. Anyway, if you can DIY and save yourself a ton of money, then that is awesome, and if you can teach others to do the same, then even better. But don't begrudge the techs their pay. Regardless of the labor rates, they only make a fraction of what you pay the dealership...probably a little less than 1/3 for the good ones. And as was mentioned, techs simply do not get paid properly to diagnose things. 20 minutes just doesn't cut it for the DIY approach. As was also mentioned, dealerships cannot accept the risk of come-backs for bad fixes. The warranty ties the labor and the parts together. In most states a written estimate is required prior to any work being done. If the customer thinks the price is too high, they may decline, and pay only for the diagnostics. I too think the MAF issue would probably have been solved by cleaning or fixing the ground, but the shop did the right thing replacing the part.

What kills me is that the bank charges unsuspecting people outrageous prices for services and transactions, especially in instances when a service like this is done in a matter of minutes.:wink:

I continue to say that I had a 2000 MR2 Spyder that acted as your Celica does, and he is right it is the MAF, but it does not need replacing. What you need to do is get a philips head screwdriver, remove the MAF, and get some carb cleaner, gently spray it a few times, and the black gunk on the sensors will dissapear. This should take you 10 minutes tops as it did me. Anyways, he was embarassed to go to the service advisor, and I said I don't give a crap that I told you what it is, they are trying to screw you. Anyways, he gets it done. 2 hours labor plus parts. $313.
