The most common front tire size for 17" wheels is 215/40-17. You'll have to check the specs for the particular tire you're considering, but most tires that size can be mounted on either a 17x7 or a 17x8.
The problem is with the rear wheels; both sizes are too narrow. The most common rear tire sizes for 18" wheels are 255/35-18 and 265/35-18. The 255 is usually approved for widths of 8.5 to 10, and the 265, for widths of 9 to 10.5. Usually, neither size is approved for mounting on 18x8 wheels.
He said he wants those particular rims, so I assume he's looking for a way to make them work, and that would be it.
I wouldn't go that way, myself. I would keep looking until I found wheels in the best sizes (in 17"/18", that would be 17x7.5 and 18x9 or 18x9.5) for the most commonly-used tire sizes. But if he really likes those wheels, well, that's his choice...
lets say i go with a rear rim setup that has 9 or 10 inch width dont i get into another problem of lets say tire rubbing and then having to install spacers to correct that
