Tach repair

My tach flickers and sometimes stops at zero. It has not failed completely.
Forum advice is to check plug if it has stopped.
What might be the cause of flickering? I presume the cable plug would not cause intermittent faults?

as with most of the other electronic boards within the car, the capacitors can leak and cause faults.

it would be worth having a look at the cluster electronics to see if there is any damage caused by leaking capacitors.
