Testing waters on all aluminum NSX-R hood

As some of you probably know, from my dealings with a former member here I ended up with a (VERY ROUGH UNCOMPLETE) NSX-R hood scoop.

Now fast forward to the present. I since I got the template, and I did some research, trying to find someone here local to me to complete my ALL ALUMINUM NSX-R hood. Will I did finally found a aluminum fabricator/welder, willling to take on this task. For starters, I give him a test, I had him make me a copy of the original (VERY ROUGH UNCOMPLETE) NSX-R hood scoop. His copy was way better then the original that Mike had sent me. Now, after seeing his work (very pleased with) I am now having him weld the NSX-R scoop to a extra OEM hood. He told me it won't be completed until 2-3 weeks from 9/7. So I am expecting the finish hood (BTW not primed or painted he's not a body shop) by the end of this month. If all works out and I'm happy with his work, I will contract him to make me a few more of these "ALL ALUMINUM NSX-R HOOD(S)" for anyone that may be interested in one. I'm not going to give a price as of yet, until I have one made for myself and figure out the cost of the entire project. Ballpark figure will be at or around the same price Mike was going to charge me, minus the cost of primer & painting (TBD) which I most likely won't offer, but again that's not set in stone. Again, at this point I'm trying to get a feel if this is worth pursuing or not. I'll keep anyone/everyone that may be interested in one after I have mine done and happy with the final outcome. I will then go into more details about this (pricing, shipping, exchange cores with deposit, etc..). Please check back to this thread for future updates.

will you be making these hoods for just flip up lights or both the flipups and projectors? Thank you

Let me clarify this....I won't be making the hood itself. I've contracted a aluminum specialist to do the work. For now I only have (2) extra 91-01 (flip up head lights hoods) available for the conversion. I don't have any 02+ fixed headlights oem hood for the conversion currently, but once I've located one, then that could be done as well.

I'm in for this! Need a NSX-R type hood that I can track WITH OUT hood pins, so this is the only option.

Would be a great product if done correctly. Why no hood pins? Just looks or do you not trust them?

I've had nothing but good luck with the older style 1/2" "Sparco" hood pins.

This should'nt be too tough heck MJ of Dali inflamity:wink: found someone to create a vented hood from owners hoods.

Second, When I was also talking to BikeVil about getting an all aluminum "R" hood, I asked him about the specs, and he said they weren't "exactly the same" as the factory "R" hood. Will this be?
I know for sure it's not like the factory "R" hood as I don't have access to one to take measurements, nor have I ever seen a real one. It's only the look of an NSX-R hood, how close to one is a mystery to me. I actually bought a VIS hood to emulate the shape, size and look of the NSX-R scoop, so it will be close to that at best.

Shoot me a PM when you have the hood completed, I for one would like to see the finished product installed on your NSX.
Will do Rey.

What you mean older style 1/2" sparco hood pins? I guess I got the new one because they're not 1/2". Any link? Pictures? I wanna see..

Thank you

FYI, if you make your scoop based on the VIS version, your scoop will be pretty shallow compared to the other hoods I've seen. The only good thing will be you would be able to keep your spare tire if you went that way

The template that I have, has a deeper scoop than the VIS hood does. I do plan on keeping the spare tire if I can. However if a shallower scoop (spare tire saving) looks out of place I may consider doing a deeper scoop. I only bought the VIS hood so that I can leave it with the fabricator to model it. That way he can get a visual as to how the scoop should look when finished.

Just and update to this post and to answer some of you who pm'd me......

Well, the aluminum fabricator has a hugh back log of stuff that has priority over my hood. I met with him a week ago and he is about 3/4 of the way there. We did a test fit to see how things fit. As it turns out.....I will have to loose the spare tire. After I get the hood back it needs to go to the body shop for completion (prep/paint). I will be out of town for (business) 2 weeks starting today. Based on my current work schedule and the aluminum fabricator's schedule I'm assuming that we're about 8 weeks off of the original target date. I'm thinking somewhere around end of November before it's completed. I'll keep everyone posted.

FYI. I fitted my custom hood a few weeks ago. It fit very well but it required some skill. The main issue (the best we could figure out) was that teh hood needs to be fit into a jig when its cut and welded. If it is not the aluminum will heat up and "warp" the hood.

Mine was tweeked a bit but we were able to bend and shim it back into place. The hood just needs a jig to stay into place.

Jackson, since you are custom fabricating this, why would you loose the option of keeping the spare tire?

I wasn't trying to loose the spare tire to begin with. As it turned out on this 1st attempt (which is costly and expected), it just so happen the scoop was cut and made in the area where the spare tire is at. I'm already close to $2k for the work already done, so I felt it's to my best insterest not to have him redo the works already done. If I had unlimited budget (which I don't) I would have had him redo it. Besides, I didn't really want to leave my car there for long periods of time for the fabricator to do test fitments along the way. The fabricator's time of business is the same as my work schedule. So the only way I can oversee this project is to take time off of work which I'm not willing to do. Maybe if I decide I want to make another one after this 1st one, I will make sure it retains the spare tire.

Again, after this first completed R hood I will then determine whether or not I want to offer them for sale, hence the subject title. The main factor will all depend on the "cost and quality" of the final product. I had this topic in the "NSX Owner Discussion" originally (for good reason IMO), but the moderator had moved it here along with giving me a infraction for trying to sell something in the wrong area of the forum. :frown: I was merely trying to gage if there were enough interest before I started a new posting in the Marketplace.

What you're saying is so true (aluminum will heat up and "warp" the hood). The fabricator brought this up to me on a couple of ocassions. So your hood does fit over the spare tire. I'm assuming the scoop is bent just far enough in front of the spare? If at all possible can you take pictures of the underside of your hood. TIA.

Just a quick update on the hood. I got the hood back about 3 weeks ago from the aluminum fabricator. The NSX-R scoop is on the hood, but will require a body shop to finish it off. Well my financial situation has changed somewhat during the last 6 weeks. I just bought/closed on another property recently so my finances are a bit tight. At this point I probably won't have the hood finished off and painted anytime soon. Hopefully I will get it done before next summer comes around.
