92 GPW w/20k miles----> Is it the one?

You may want to seek the counsel of Larry Bastanza, he is the resident NSX guru in your neck of the woods and is a member here. Certified techs are great, but unless they are NSX certified or have worked on many NSX's, they may not be the best to take advice from on issues such as this.

Thank you so much for the advise. That's exactly what I will do, once I get the car. I will PM Larry B. And hopefully he can help me out.

If either you or Yinzer don't pull the trigger on that low mileage 1992 Grand Prix White, then scoot over and I will. Highly desirable NSX color with almost impossible to find low mileage and well maintained. What is there to wait on? You just don't see these often, and I have a hankering to get another Grand Prix White to be the opposite of my daily driver Grand Prix White.

I made up my mind, I decided with the GPW. Thank you so much everyone for your help. I will keep you guys posted. I will process the paper work on Monday, but probably wont get the car until that next week.

To help with the snap ring question...the way I understand it, most of them fail by around 40-50k miles if they're going to. Mine is within range, and without failure at 125k miles, and the case has never been replaced. That doesn't mean I beat on it. I'm apparently one of the lucky ones, but I'm still going to be very careful with it until I can get the case and associated parts replaced. Just be mindful of what these guys are saying. Also, a couple of things I didn't see mentioned, if you start having problems with the transmission popping out of gear or making a whining noise that is unusual. Those are (according to what I was told by Wade at SoS) the most noticeable signs of failure.

Aside from that... W O W, you're a lucky new owner!!! Enjoy that car, and definitely keep us posted!

As a 1 of 24, 2000 Red/Tan owner :
the price difference from 38k to 52k and being able to pickup a white 92 coupe with 20K on the odometer
the white one is the way to go at that price point/mileage/maintenance history
Good call sir, hope it works out for you. Did you get a PPI ?
all cool stuff aside, get a PPI if you still have time to do it before handing over 38K
-Cheers !

Congrats! Very happy for you. I admire your luck finding this one.

do yourself a favor... if the advice is "get the trans fixed".. I am no expert don't listen to me on that point.. then go spend the dough to get the trans done right away.. before the "new wears off" youR new toy.

I just went thru this 2 years ago with a Porsche 996 cab.. wonderful PorschE engineers let almost every 1997-2005 boxster and carrera (non turbos) out the door with a suspect IMS bearing... and you drove it at you own very grest peril after the warrenty. It was 2000.00 to upgrade and the piece of mind and the increased "saleabilty" of the car was well worth it.

I would guess getting the trans fixed is a big "plus" in the value of that car. KEEP THE RECEIPT.. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE RECEIPT... IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!!!

get it fixed ... sleep at night..... recover the money at sale time... or get a different car... cause you'll always wonder......

That's what I'm afraid of. After I purchase this car, should I take it in to Acura and have them replace the half transmission case, even though the Acura certified mechanic said it was fine?
I like this reply:

If it were my car, what I would do is in line with this advice. I would not spend the $2-3K just to get the preventive fix. (Remember, some of the transmission cases were actually just fine and the snap ring should never fail, but there's no way to know for sure.) Instead, I would be aware of the symptoms to look for (well described in the above post) and, if they ever happen, have it addressed at that time. Also, even in the absence of symptoms, if you have any transmission work done (such as a clutch replacement), I would have the half transmission case replaced at that time, because you would be saving on labor since the transmission will be opened up anyway then.

But if you're worried about it and it's worth $2-3K to you for the peace of mind of never having to worry about it, then you might prefer to go ahead and do the preventive fix. Your money, your car, your decision.

HTH

It still needs to have a good pre-purchase inspection on it. If you really want to be thorough, have a mechanic check it AND a good body shop guy inspect it. Don't forget how a closer inspection found these problems on this allegedly-immaculate low-mileage white NSX. I'm not saying the one we're talking about now would not be worth buying, but it might not deserve pricing as a pristine car unless it checks out in a thorough inspection.

Very simple. IMO: As has been stated a few times above, seek a PPI. And read pbassjo's response in that thread, he's very knowledgeable - there's a chance that some or all issues discussed may be overstated. Seek a PPI before signing anything. "Redbird92" here on Prime is around 4 hours away in Maryland and may be available to come in for a PPI. At least he has been able to travel for a PPI in the past. He's one of the NSX whisperers here on Prime whose customers have raved about his service. Search on Prime and verify for yourself. Drop him a line and see if he still travels for PPI's.

That's what I would do. The insurance of spending the equivalent cost of a few tires on a PPI from an NSX specialist will be completely worth it. You could also ask the seller to fax you all known records. If none exist, run the carfax, look up the dealerships listed if any, and call them - with the VIN they may be able to tell you the services performed if they haven't purged their records, which most dealerships surprisingly seem to do after just a few years.

I'm also 40 minutes away from the dealership. Soonest I could stop by is this Saturday, if you would like a set of local eyes to take a look.

Good luck with whatever you do !

Oh, and let me know what you do do. ;)

these problems on this allegedly-immaculate low-mileage white NSX ---> like mentioned on this thread, this is the exact same car. When the thread was started, it was still in Chicago. The owner I am buying it from was the person that purchased the car. And last summer is when the timing belt and water pump as well as the fluid was replaced as well as new set of tires.

This was PPI performed by McGrath Acura on 7-31-09

This is the LATEST CARFAX

I think the person bought the car for $35,900.

IS IT STILL A GOOD CAR TO OWN, FOR $38K?

I read both threads and I personally would no longer be interested in this car. To many owners and stories for a car with a no story price. I would keep looking and buy a car with fewer owners and less or no paint work

Wow, when I first started reading the thread, the GPW looked like a no-brainer mint condition find.
But now that it has some "history", that definitely changes things.

I don't have an opinion on what to do, but man was I excited for you to find a mint GPW with so low miles.

Granted, I'm biased. lol

Good luck with whatever you do and hope it all works out.

Lol. I just realized that I was encouraging you on s2ki to hold out for your asking price on your 08 s2000 (I am Socals and also have a gpw 08) while over here I'm encouraging you not to buy the gpw nsx (I have a na2 nsxr replica and an 05 silver nsx)
Small world

I still think the 02 GPW is not a bad deal. But, I went ahead for something else. Hope Yinzer got to check it out today. I know he always wanted one.
My change of heart directed me to the 05 blue NSX in Pittsburgh. I wish someone here could check it out for me, I think Yinzer is from around the area. But if anyone else with the time, I would greatly appreciate it. I am willing to offer a small fee for the trouble.

Yes, I totally remember you. It is a small world after all! I got a buyer picking up the car this Saturday. I will truly miss that car. I love everything about it, but the interior space. Thats why Im going for the big brother NSX. More room, and more power.

I think you're the only person in the world who wants to get an NSX because you want more interior space.

 Wow. You left the bereaved white '92 (not '02) to Yinzer for scrap value and want him now to double check the LBBP for you? Did you research the Prime on that LBBP at all? Sheesh........... ..... get a grip.

I did a little research on the LBBP but not much history on the car. As far as 02 GPW, I just felt like Yinzer was in the better side of the world. I was too far out to drive and check out the car, it would of took me 7 hours to get there. It worked out better for him, I think he was only 40 minutes away from the dealership. At first, I was very excited about the car. I found myself a 92 GPW! However, after the previous thread from 09 and I got to see some of the issues, which I think was not really that serious for me say no to the car. It was when, I tried to tell the owner that our deal still stands and if he was willing for me to take it to Acura for PPI, and he said NO. Now maybe if I was only an hour away to check it out and decide for myself that would be a different story. Ultimately if he got to see it for himself, he has better understanding and really could decide if any of the issues that was brought up was good to go. I am very new to the NSX world. I really don't know much about the car yet, but as soon as I get my own, I will definitely learn.
