"Riced Out" true meaning/derivation

I have just thought about and started questioning where the derivation of the phrase "rice" referring to the fugly imports comes from after reading post after post of "rice."

Now when one thinks of the term phrase "riced out" one would expect it to refer to something from asia; at least this is what i was thinking. Now, if you look at most modified cars in japan, they are most likely in agreement with the taste of most user's here on prime, since they are usually carrying a bunch of JDM goodies.

So here's my point:

The riced out vehicles we see today are the ones with another car's head/brake lights, fenders, or any other body part.

e.g. this:

But who started these fugly conversions? For all i've seen, the only cars that sport something like that are the one's i see here in america. I have not seen one from japan that is "riced out" like that.

So to say something is "riced out" when it has nothing to do with what is going on over on the other side of the world is politically incorrect in my opinion. So why do we use that as a metaphor when it doesn't relate?

In my mind, something "riced out" should refer to JDM, like having all the NSX-R goodies on your ride (considering it is an nsx and not a del sol).

I think i'm just rambling nonesense, but it does tickle my brain as to why.

Does anyone agree with what i'm saying?

Please state some opinions so i know i'm not alone in this.

i don't know if that is a perfect definition of ricing out though,

cars like this

are pretty sweet and i don't know if thats necessarily ricing out per se,

also things like the sil-eighty are exactly what you describe but i don't think that most people would consider that rice. rice is in the bowl of the beholder though i guess

btw alot of the cars that come out of japan are friggin ridiculous like minivans and cresta's with 10 foot exhaust pipes and stuff.....

hahaha...that was a good one!!! I'm going to have to use that in the future...unless a copyright on the phrase is on its way....or am i just late on this one...heh.

I totally forgot about sil-eighty's and one-via's, but correct me if i'm wrong, isn't a 180sx basiacally a fastback varient of the S13? It's based on the same chassis, only thing that differs really are the lights and hatch; i believe some call it the S13 180sx in Japan. I see it as putting the JDM front on a USDM integra, where putting a CL headlight on an integra is two entirely different cars.

its actually a whole clip, they used to wreck from drifting all the time and it was cheaper to put the other car's clip on instead, nissan eventually actually made a version of this from the factory though cuz it was so popular

haha i just remember it from initial D

Ahhh...here is the reason via the Wikipedia link quoted:

"The term originally referred to Japanese motorcycles in the early to mid eighties, but grew out of muscle car enthusiasts' jokes that cars from Japan used engines powered by rice alcohol."

That is the answer i was looking for. I would have never guessed the term would be in wiki...it looks like they have everything in there.

Rice Rice Baby!!! hahahaha, I'm surprised that riced out cars are still roaming the streets  ; makes me sick when i see one.

This ridiculous "philosophical" thread is found just about on any car forum.

Can we not pollute NSX prime with this kind of time-wasting rhetoric?

well... its not like you have to participate in this particular forum thread though....

It is the off topic forum. Why would it be a big deal to talk about it?

I see this forum is not as it used to be back when i was only an active reader.

Sorry if this is a repost of some sort. I was after the actual derivation and not what it means to some people. I wanted to know the origin of the phrase and was given the answer. Most threads i see is just what rice looks like and opinions, which is what encouraged me to write up my post.

Again, sorry if this thread did not live up to your standards (for who is complaining). But why bother posting and reading if it is old news? The only person wasting anyone's time is the one who complains and posts that they are having their time wasted (yourself). If the respected and elite members on this forum believe this thread to be a waste of server space, then i'll be happy to be the first to ask the mods to delete this.

It is the off topic forum as stated above, which i assumed anything goes; apparently this topic is not qualified to be in the off topic section (again, according to those who complain).

I will not reply to any future agruments about this thread being wasted space, so please save your time; I have better things to do like read more informative threads on this forum.
