Back to the original question, I put a sound meter on mine once. It was 6 decibels louder which is quite a lot. You WILL get resonances ranging from very minor to unacceptable. I will never put cats back on though (I hope)!

3M brake cleaner from NAPA works very well, although even though I don't drive much at all, i can't take raw painted aluminum where rocks can chip the paint off. Paper thin aluminum needs protection IMO!
