How do I go about replacing the stock antenna mast on my '92? About what is the cost of a new mast? Also, will aftermarket power antennas, as seen on ebay all of the time, work OK?

I think he means REPAIR not replace his existing antenna system.

A new mast is MUCH easier and cheaper to install than any crap you see on ebay. I suppose they will work OK for a while, but are of extremely poor quality.

If you mast is not extending properly the tether is probably broken, which means you will have to open the antenna case and remove the broken bits.

Installing a new mast is a snap once you have removed the old one.

I cannot remove my antenna mast for the life of me. I got the top nut off. The whole assembly will drop.. However my mast is still stuck up about 12" and I cannot push it down any more. I've taken apart the whole assembly in the car to see if I can get the cord. But nothing.. should I just break the mast?

should I just break the mast?

That would not be helpful. Its been a while since I have done this...

Pull the entire antenna assembly out, extend mast, wedge the antenna ball under one of your tire edges (or vice...whatever is handy) and pull. The entire mast should come right out.

Next, you gotta get the broken part of the tether out of the gears. so hook up the electronics and turn on the radio, it should eject the broken bit of tether.

If it is "broken bits" of tether then you will have to take apart the housing and remove the bits.

The new mast is installed by normally inserting the tether into the assembly and turning on/off the radio a couple of times.

I'm rekindling this thread in that it did not state where one can purchase a replacement mast, that would be less expensive than getting one from Acura. Also, my mast does not retract completely, which I understand is the result of broken teeth on the plastic tether. Can the defective tether be replaced, or do you need to replace the entire antenna device?

Thanks,

Mario

You can use the antenna mast from a Honda accord. It is about half the Price of the nsx one. To remove the mast has been covered before. But you pull hard on the antenna as it is being extended (you will probably need to grab it with pliers or channel locks). Once the mast is out remove the main part of the antenna, there is a special antenna tool to remove the nut on top, or you can use needle nose pliers but be carefull to not scratch the paint. Remove the trunk liner to get to the main antenna assembly. Rove the securing nuts, and wire connector. After removal open up the antenna to get to the remaining mast piece. Reassemble and reinstall in car, then you thread the mast tail in, turn the radio on and off and it should suck it in.

I cant say much about the installation part but from experience, buying an NSX without the top locking nut/rubber, the mast comes out very easily. so easily in fact it will come out naturally at 40 MPH without the top locking nut. Ended up buying a whole antenna assembly from someone off of a NSX FB group just to make sure i get the necessary parts to make sure it wont happen again.
For those that have replaced the mast, is it as simple as this video makes it out to be?
