Final Major Service 1991 Questions

My NSX is 200+ miles away from the nearest dealer. I will be trailering it down in the next 30-45 days for these services:

WP/TB/Harmonic balancer
Oil pan gasket
Change tranny fluid
Flush brake fluid

My car is a 1991 and has 25,700 miles on it. Is it worth having the water hoses replaced? My understanding is it has more to do with heat/cool cycles than aging. Would that be correct?

What else if anything should I have looked into?

I have to order the parts prior to bringing the car down so everything is available once the car is in the shop. I plan on ordering the parts this week. Otherwise it sits until everything arrives.

Thanks in advance....

Yes.

No. Rubber can dry out, crack, and weaken over time, regardless of how many times the car has been driven during that period. Your hoses are 22 years old. You don't want to get stranded somewhere with a blown hose. Replace them now.

What else if anything should I have looked into?
Everything else in the maintenance schedule which has exceeded the recommended time and mileage interval since the previous service. (Note that they will be already flushing the coolant as part of the water pump replacement. But everything else that you didn't already mention, unless it's been done and not overdue to be done again.)

-check your transmission serial number to see if you fall in the range of the snap ring issue with the tranny housing. (91-92 cars)
-A/C coolant should be converted to standards now (its probably R12)
-ABS flush as well as brake flush
-vtec gaskets

for 1991 cars that have gone through many miles - I'd also swap out the lost-motion assemblies, but since your car only has 22,000 miles (which is actually an incredible find), they haven't gone up/down much so their little piston mechanisms should be still okay

While your at it, you might as well replace the thermostat along with all other things mentioned before. Just Saying!

Just a quick note about oil here... Yes, you need to buy 6 quarts of oil (5.3 quarts are needed) and 10W30 is recommended. For most major brands of oil including Mobil 1, you can get a much better price by buying a five-quart jug at Walmart, along with a single extra quart, rather than buying 6 individual quarts.

For those who use Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic, or their superpremium Pennzoil Ultra full synthetic, they currently have a nice rebate offer, with a $10 rebate plus a $5 coupon on a purchase of five quarts. When you consider that Platinum runs around $23 for a five-quart jug at Walmart and Ultra around $27, that's a heck of a deal. Click here for details.

Agree with nsxtasy on the hoses but FWIW I have a /94 with just under 40K miles that lived in CA and AZ (10 years in AZ in a climate controlled warehouse when not in use) up until approx 3.5 years ago and per my tech who is a 20+ year Acura veteran with a lot of NSX experience, in examining the hoses very carefully in my car he sees no evidence of any degradation at all. He also said that Honda hoses rarely fail. Now, I only mention this as a matter of interest. I have all of the hoses in a box in my garage and will do the job in the near term -- cheap insurance for sure. Better safe than sorry!

Best,
Jeff

I always inspected my water hoses carefully every year... but after 15 years of them still looking perfect I replaced them.
When I inspected all the removed/replaced hoses (inside and out) they were all like new -- but I felt better.
Your mileage may vary.

Honcho is right, those part numbers are for 91-92 shit starts to slowly change after 93

I have rebuilt 4 NSX engines due to hose failure. "Rare" is a matter of perception;).

Thanks guys for the info. Looks like I will have to add a few things to my list. My transmission is not in the snap ring range.

Thanks Ken! I'm running the Ultra.
