Odor from leather

I have a 1995 NSX with a black interior and I notice a very strong odor coming from the leather on my seats. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, any thoughts on what can be done about it? I've tried conditioning them with Lexol which temporaliy masked it but it keeps coming back. Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Gregg

That is too funny! Have you been eating beans?

What kind of odor? My 97 still have the leather smell. Is that what you are referring to or is it something foul smelling?

You've got to determine where the source of the "smell" is coming from. It's it ingrained into the seat from spill or seepage or etc., it'll have to be deep cleaned. I'd advise a professional or professional products. Maybe something like this.

If the odor stems from the launch of too many "air biscuits" then a dietary revision is recommended.

The only thing I'm worried about is too high humidity and closed windows. Do you think that this could be a cause. Since when do you recognize this odor, from the point you have the car or later? Could be everything indeed, it's certainly NOT NSX-specific. You may ask a professional leather-specialist.

My leather still smells very, very sweet.

If its really humid or the seats got wet at some point, might be a mold issue. I had an Integra where the interior got drenched due to a random and sudden down pour. (I left the sun roof open since it was a hot sunny day) The interior eventually dried up but anytime it got humid or wet, the seats would start to stink. I had to get it deep cleaned eventually. Fabreeze helped a little before I got it cleaned.

That's the problem if it's started to stink ONE time they'll stink EVERYTIME in the same situation (humidity). There are specialised people out there who work with uncommon :))) methods (ozone treatment!) to prevent this. It's not cheap but worth the money. The bacterials that produce the stink have to get killed. You don't reach this with soap or other common chemicals.

I've only heard of the ozone treatment. If you go that route please let us know how it worked.

I've owned the car for about a year and the smell has been there all along. It's a smell that is hard to describe. It quite a strong odor and is the opposite of smelling sweet if that makes any sense. The odor is on all the leather on the seats. (headrests, sides, etc) It's seems like it's actually an odor from the dye although the inserts in the doors do not have the same problem. It's not overly humid here so I kind of ruled that one out.

I've never had a car with leather seats but mine actually smells like a restored 50's/60's car if that tells you anything.

What you can try first is:

Put some vinegar in the car overnight, NOT ON the interior :D, just one or two CUPS of vinegar in the left and right footroom. In the morning you remove the CUPS and put two cups of freshly milled coffee beans the same way as the vinegar. Should help in many cases.

I use the Zaino leather cleaner and conditioner and I love the smell. Not sure why yours smell so funky.

if it smells dat bad. just re upholster it with new leather.
it can be the smell that seep down into the sponge part of your seat under the leather. Or can it be that your car was in a flood or rain and it went into the interior and soaked into the leather and sponge of your seat? Well best way is to just re do your seats in new leather and check on the sponge material.
