Greetings all,
What are your opinions on Black or Gray rims on a black NSX? Too black?

Personally I don't really like black rims on black cars... A nice little chrome would do...

I used to have one of those black Trans AM's ('88) with the black mesh rims. I really liked the look. I prefer black wheels that have a deep polished lip.

I think the car would deffinately look mysterious and batmobile-esque. Also, I think that dark cars whose rims match the car color look good (in general), but bright colored cars whose rims match look tacky (imagine yellow or imola orange).

If I were to do it, I would not get rims with lots of spokes. I'd probobly get them with three or five. Plus, it makes your car that much more "yours" by giving it a unique personality. Since its an NSX and not a Civic (rice rocket), it's looks tend to benefeit from individual asthetic mods.

Go for it.

Do you think a 2002 NSX with 5 spokes would look like an earlier model that has been updated to look like a 2002?

I got my wheels powdercoated black on my 94 black/tan. The reason for this was partially ease of care and partially for a different look. After having them for a while now I have noticed that there is a love em or hate em reaction. This is generally based on others' perception of the car as one with looks as priority, where chromed wheels are more desirable, or the car being more performance driven, where the black rims are more desirable. I think the black wheels give the car a stealthy appearance, and I can assure you they are much easier to maintain than polished wheels, and aren't prone to leakage and flaking problems as can be the chrome wheels.

Black on Black looks very mean!

Someone mentioned earlier that it's either a "love it" or "hate it" kind of reaction and I think this is so true.

Ever since I lowered the car it looks so much better.

See pictures on my site if you'd like.

Black with black wheels..MY favorite combo. Looks tough as nails. I dont think anything else looks as agressive. White w/ white wheels is just as high a contender as well. Once I see a white/white leather/white wheel nsx..I think my life will be complete.

I run gunmetal rims with a silver lip on my black one. I'd recommend them. the black ones are on a case by case basis with me, some I like, others i don't care for.

You know what a Black NSX with Black rims reminds me of.... Knight Rider! That is the car KITT should have been!

...I also have to jump in and agree on this one. Of course it is like someone mentioned earlier, it is a matter of perception. The wheels and rims will make or break the appearance of a car. In my opinion chrome rims make a car look more desirable and give it a better sense of power.

What is the current thinking on the type of paint that is best for refinishing wheels with all paint and no polish or chrome? Is powdercoating appropriate for a completely painted wheel including the lip of rim? Is it worth the extra cost? The FAQ has a couple of 3 year old posts that suggest that it is more durable, but perhaps more brittle than normal body paint and therefore more prone to chipping around the lip. I've had quotes from two different quality body shops in our area and one goes with normal body paint for $125/wheel and the other one does just powdercoating at $160/wheel. These prices include all prep on 96 OEM wheels including taking out curb damage.

Opinions and experience please.

I paid $50 per wheel for powdercoating. You will need to sandblast them prior, and that process should run about $40 for all.
The result was great, and I think you will be happy with the result. I didn't know if I would like them before doing it, but I really like them. I have noticed that the folks who like the look are more performance oriented and appreciate the aggressive look they give the car. The others are more into the looks of the car as a "street ride", so to speak, and are secondarily into the performance. I don't know where the "spare tire" comments come from. That's rather bizarre. Perhaps they have never seen them done correctly (if at all). At any rate, like they say... everyone has an opinion.

ive been thinking about changing wheels and have checked out as many pics as i could find.

imo, dont love the black wheels, gunmetal is ok. in general i think i prefer more subtle wheels that dont draw my attention away from the car's lines. im at the point now where i actually *like* the stock wheels! i probably will wind up with polished stock. Or maybe its just sensory overload....

ps: this is all in relation to black cars. other colors are an entirely different opinion.
