Trouble shooting ac belt

I loosened my ac belt and pulled it off the pulley's right now. Where is a good spot to keep it so I can just run the engine and rev the rpm's up to see if I still get the noise? Or do I have to pop off the alt and remove the ac belt all together?

I have it sitting so on one of the pulley's still and have the excess hanging down toward the floor.

I would remove it, by taking the alt belt off, takes two minutes.
