what are symptoms of valves needing adjustment?

after replacing 2 ignition coils that were out of spec, and replacing some BKR6ES plugs with the stock oem plugs (PFR something) it now runs properly, but it still sounds like it could be better, at idle you can hear it miss a beat maybe ever 10 seconds or so, especially after a hard run.

a miss during idle i think would be more of an ignition issue, so maybe replacing all the coils with new ones would make a difference? even though all of them are in ohm spec now, i wonder if new ones still make a difference.

what makes me suspect valves need to be adjusted, is, when really stepping on the gas pedal, i can hear air hissing a little bit.

A) Valves don't "hiss" :P
B) you generally need to readjust the valves every 10k miles or so
C) symptoms of needing a valve adjustment are:
1) noisy valvetrain (rattling)
2) light tapping/ticking sound from the valvetrain that is RPM dependant

Slight popping from the exhaust at idle is normal especially if you have an aftermarket exhaust and/or not cat.

ok. thanks. this helps a bit. it is slightly ticky/tappy back there, hard to hear. it could be quieter now that i think about it. i need to get on a dyno and meet/ride in other nsx's to compare. i am all alone :(

^^^^^^You beat me to it...LOL

To Quote the Wiki:
In the 1997 maintenance schedule it says to do it at 30k miles, then again at 90k. The 1996 manual says 30k ,60k, 90k. It is normal to hear the valves when the engine is cold. Some of what you hear is the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump, as the oil warms up the pressure drops a little and the relief valve does not work as much.

If it is going to keep you awake at night wondering if you should do it.... do it.
