Who do you use for collector car insurance?

My insurance is about to expire and am currently getting quotes from different companies. I heard good things about Wawanesa and thinking that I will be switching to them, but what is the advantage of going to a collector car insurance?

Sorry for hijacking.
Collector car insurance is usually cheaper, and coverage provides agreed/stated value rather than book value. And in Maricopa County AZ, cars that have collector car insurance don't have to be tested for emissions compliance.

I use American Collectors insurance. When i first called they didnt want to as it was too new (my first 05) but after i explained it and how rare it was they were all for it. I just transferred and upped the policy on my Imola and no issues.
I used them for my 91 NSX. The company was called American Hobbyist back then, and it was a nightmare dealing with them. I ran a quote just now for kicks, and it came back with $858 for only $300k coverage with a $1k deductible. Grundy kicks their ass.

How quickly were you able to get proof of insurance? My car is financed so I'd want to make sure they get proof of the new insurance company.

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Grundy. I submitted my application online on Wednesday 3/28, and Underwriting just approved it and took my credit card payment over the phone. $594/year for 45k agreed value, $1 million liability, no deductible, unlimited mileage. SWEET!

Man I love Prime and the NSX community. It's so awesome how we help each other out. You guys are the best!

i have my 71 fiat dino spider with these guys. good friend has his 94 Ferrari 348 SS with these guys and shopped pretty hard b4 going that route. the nsx would be an "exotic" and analagous to 348 (but better:biggrin:). my dino is a "collector". used to be with Hagerty for years and switched b/c better coverage for less $.

My 66 mustang is through statefarm with an agreed on value.
I had to take it to a specialist who judges cars, appraises them, etc to give me a letter on how much it's worth. I then took that to statefarm and it says on my policy it's for $xx,xxxx amount.
For my NSX, statefarm had me bring it in for pictures when I first got it.

I've never had to file a big claim, so I don't know what that part looks like.

I submitted and application with Grundy and they denied saying that my car is not old enough I have a 91 BB NSX. Do you guys think I should call them or is there any other company that can take my Nsx.

I would definitely call them. I used Grundy when I owned my 91 BB.

Did you call Grundy or Grundy Worldwide? You want to be dealing with Grundy Worldwide. Use their online quote system. "NSX coupe" is an available option under "1991" "Acura". Just get the quote, and apply directly from there if you're happy with the result (or adjust the terms). No need to talk to anyone unless you have questions. Your car is older than mine so you shouldn't have any problems.

I have my 1991 NSX insured with American Collectors... Give them a try!

Just as important as what insurance company you decide to go through is who is the agent/broker........ Dealing direct with the company isn't always the best way to go and having someone you know on a first name basis is always a plus. There are times when things can get approved by the agent/broker that normally wouldn't/couldn't.......
How do I know? My wife has been a personal lines broker for 30+ years representing 13 companies and I am always amazed at what she can do or approved. She is without doubt the best at what she does

I believe you. I was trying to contact this agent at Grundy worldwide but she was nowhere to be found. I sent her an email about my application and the only she said was the my car has to be 25 years or older or have a value of over 100k. She also said that she has information about other Nsx's with the company and that maybe a few weeks ago the criteria to qualify for a collectors insurance changed :-( .

This person lied to you. I just applied to add my 97 NSX last Friday, and it was approved (in fact, I received my new insurance documents via email 30 minutes ago). I would call back and ask to speak to someone else.

Alright I'm confused...I have state farm and have the car covered saying I drive less then 7,500 miles a year for about $1k yr. It's a 2002 and they said it would be covered under KBB value or similar which has a value that is higher then what I paid for the car a year ago. Am I to assume the collector car insurance is set up for the older NSX's that have a KBB value of less then the car is worth or am I missing something?

You need to read these articles:

http://www.freeinsuranceadvice.com/agreed-value-insurance-collector-cars

I would not rely on KBB to determine the value of my collector vehicle. Agreed value is the way to go for collector cars IMO.

If you get an agreed value policy (which typical car insurance IS NOT) you get paid what the agreed value is. Example, you get a stated/agreed value of $50K, company calculates the premium, you pay it. Collector/exotic car insurance companies do this, regular insurance rarely, if ever, writes these kind of policies. Book value on NSXs is notoriously low compared to real world transaction prices, so book value will leave you holding a very large bag if there is a total loss (fire, theft, heavy collision).

Regarding Agreed Value policies.

I believe they are better for protecting your investment.

I use Progressive for my Boat and RV because AAA will not write an agreed value policy on them. I think that is bad business practice. They are losing some customer base from that decision. I insure 5 vehicles and a house with AAA and would like the multiple policy discount but not for a regular policy on those 2 vehicles which are worth more than the NADA guide value.

Liberty Mutual won't write an agreed value policy for my NSXs either. However, my collector auto policies through Grundy Worldwide are still a better deal even if I factor in the multi-car discount from Liberty Mutual, so it's pretty much a no-brainer.

Yeah I saved a ton with Grundy after having Haggerty for a while and DocL schooled me.

Interesting thread...

Anyone have experience with Grundy Worldwide on a total or partial loss or accident?

I used the Grundy website, and got a quote for $356 annually. That's less than half what I'm paying Metlife right now, for similar coverage. That's so low, it's set off my 'too good to be true' alarm. How can it be so low? I'd sure like to hear how Grundy has handled some claims.

I just locked in my Grundy Worldwide policy. $480/yr for 1 mill in liability coverage, half a mill in uninsured motorist, 30K agreed value collision and comprehensive.

Funny, on a confirming email I noticed in small print under the Philadelphia Insurance Companies logo it said "A Member of the Tokio Marine Group". Googled that because of the spelling but sure enough, the Tokio Marine Group is a Japanese insurance giant. Looks like the NSX has reached back to the homeland for her insurance.

Wow, interesting!

Congrats! I just had a rock chip repaired on my MCB windshield, and the glass repair shop (Safelite) took care of the claim process. I didn't have to do a thing!

I got my Nsx insured with Grundy Worldwide, the female rep had no idea what a Nsx was. i talked to a male rep and he insure me within 5 minutes, 600 bucks per year. Thanks to you guys for your help :)
