Who suffers from migrains?

I get migrains every so often. There is no set pattern in time when they happen. Haven't been able to narrow it down to paticular foods or even in general from likey greasy foods, or high sugary foods. Really hard to predict them. I usually get them twice a month, sometimes more. Sometimes they get so bad to where they take me out. I can't do anything but lay there and wait for it to pass. I get really sensitive to changes in light, sounds, and smell. Excedrin helps a little bit, but not much.

So my question is any other primers suffer from these?

I have. Most of the time it was really bad. But I don't get it often. I am sensitive to hotter weather as oppose to my sister who gets one when it is colder. I take migraleve. If I had too much chocolate and coffee at the same time, I usually will get migraine.

I get them and usually wake up with them after something has changed with my sleep conditions. If I stay up too late or my pillows get messed up somehow during the night. Another huge factor is quick changes in barometric pressure or temperature. I don't believe there is any single food trigger for me, instead it usually comes on after a few days of eating poor quality food. Anything that is in a box, bag, or can is suspect.

I've got a few home grown remedies that I've come up with over the years.
These may or may not work on any given day. If it feels wrong stop. Timing is important.

When the migraine is first coming on. Aspirin followed by coffee. If that doesn't work after about 30 minutes I'll take a 1/4 tsp of pure table salt and put it down the hatch. It's not the healthiest thing to do and it tastes terrible but in some cases it has aborted a migraine in seconds. When this works you can actually feel the migraine reduce while the salt is in your mouth.
Another important thing is to increase circulation. Heating pad or hot water bottle wrapped in a towel against the core of my body (upper back or neck sometimes) and an ice pack on the side of my head where the migraine is. This gets the blood flowing.

If none of the above works I go to a dark room to sleep with the window open and a humidifier on with the ice pack and the hot water bottle.

Drink lots of water!!

If the migraine is in my frontal sinuses I apply Vicks. It stings the hell out of my eyes (don't get it in your eyes!) from the fumes but it also opens my airways and it feels good.

Icy Hot on shoulders and neck can sometimes help as well but it can also sometimes make it worse.

Other times you can EAT your way out of a migraine. A sugary and starchy food like a donut or a salty foods like a couple of cheeseburgers, fries, and a coke from McDonalds can be magical in it's ability to make things stop.

Other symptoms I get along with a headache include:
Cold feet and hands
Sensitivity to light
Aura
Stiff neck and tension in shoulders
Dyspnea (breathing issues)
Nervousness
Foggy Thought Process
Decreased Reflexes
Bruises on forehead and around eyes from rubbing constantly
Sinus issues
MASSIVE food cravings for salt and sugar and crappy junk food that I would normally avoid.

Make sure your house has enough humidity.
Make sure the air quality is good. Purifiers and all that are fine but the best is just opening a window to let fresh air in. Even in the middle of Winter.

If you only recently started getting these I would check you bloodpressure.....

I had them for 18 months starting in 2007. I would get them nearly every day. After visiting numerous specialists, having every drug in the book, and having nerve blocks injected with no success, I saw an Ear Nose and Throat Specialist. Deviated Septum. Had that fixed on February 9, 2009. Haven't had a migraine since. Hope you find your cure, because I now how horrible they can be.

Other than some of the symptoms noted above a large part of many migraines are subject but not limited to incorrect sleeping positions, lack of fluids resulting in headaches leading to migraines. Improper nutrition of balanced diet, accidents from past history etc. Each case is different and many are similar to the obvious.

One thing that helps me with those savage headaches (the ones where you can't open your eyes, and sound is disturbing) is coffee with ground cinnamon. Just one cup with a Tbsp of ground cinnamon, I also add a little sugar. It is like you are drinking coffee with dirt....but if it works, hey:smile:. Good luck.

A lot of different reasons it seems people get them, and a lot of different remedies. I hate them and wouldn't wish them on anyone.

I used to get them... I cut down on:
-Caffeine.
-Sugary drinks.
-Salt (went lighter).
-Stress.

Added:
+Lots of water.
+Green tea.
+Running.
+Daily Aspirin. Miracle drug for just about everything. Most inexpensive and best ROI you can have with any supplement.
+More sleep and regular sleep. I find taking Melatonin at a consistent time was good. It just sucks when you run out for a week like I did this week ..:(

be careful taking aspirin every day.If you are young/active you must weigh the risk of excessive bleeding, esp head trauma with the reason you are taking it.Of course any daily aspirin should be 90 mg or less.

I'm sure there are more Primers who have migraines who haven't chimed in.

I've had them since about 12-13 (I'm 50 now). There have been less frequent as I get older. I now average perhaps two a month on a bad stretch.

Are you taking the regular Excedrin or the Excedrin Migraine? The second one seems to be more effective, at least for me.

get a script for imitrex or zomig.

If you're looking for a Rx, you can't go wrong with Imitrex (many versions: injectable, spray, etc.) I use the injection since I'm used to shooting myself. That was the only type when Imitrex first came out. And injections are supposed to act quicker.

Another Rx I have is Maxalt. A little pill that I can carry easier than the injection kit.

I also take a couple of Aleve (naproxen sodium) together with either the Imitrex or Maxalt. Studies have shown that this combo really acts fast and it's true.

I haven't tried zomig.

Talk to me some more.

aspirin is a much stronger drug than the common man gives it credit for.....it is so ubiquitus....but it has an irreversible effect on platelets making them usless to stop bleeding, when you need it to,like when you cut yourself/smash into a tree skiing, fall off your bike ect........and that is on chronic 90 mg/day.If you are taking the big boy dose of greater than 300 mg day everyday that is too much.Talk to your doctor....unless you have a history of peripheral artery disease ,stroke/heart attack you really don't need it.

Look at the ingredient panel on the back of the Excedrine labels. You'll notice that Excedrine Extra Strength and Excedrine Migraine have the exact same ingredients with the same dosage. Somehow 'Migraine' costs more ;)

I've had five of them since I was about 14. Each time I was debilitated. I know when i begin to lose full vision in one eye that i have 30 minutes before i get sick. I've found that Excedrine Migraine and a nap makes takes it from a 12/10 to a 5.

Does reading BATMANs's posts qualify?

LoL

Never looked at that the difference between Excedrines. Usually when I feel that pressure in my eye then yeah its about 30 mins until it gets full blown with the Nausea, and sensitivity. Weirdest advice I heard was to take tylonel(excedrine) and try to take a dump. My uncle says that works for him. Don't ask...

This is correct. Whenever Costco has either one on sale, I pick the cheapest one since the ingrediens are the same.

Notice that one of the ingredients is caffeine.

Caffeine is said to cause headaches yet here you have it as an ingredient considered to be a "pain reliever aid."

Interesting to say the least.

It's been determined through studies showing caffeine having a synergistic effect in tandem with acetaminophen and aspirin. Who knows. The only circumstances that I've heard where caffeine causes headaches are those with sensitivity to stimulants and the lack of caffeine from chronic consumption. Again, who knows :)

Many people have these problems as I did too.
The back of my head would throb, my eyes would be heavy, eye brow area would hurt, neck is sore, muscle feels tight, shoulder feels tight, couple of times i would have cold sweat and want to throw up. Finally i gave in and went to see a Dr. that works on the atlas vertebrae.

Chiropractor Health Wellness Dr. was referred to me by a friend. He had bad back and neck pains and headaches due to an accident he was in many years ago. And now he has been treated and is doing so much much better. He told me that his problems is bout 80 plus % is gone. I was telling him how my mom is going through these issues and nothing is helping and she even had cortizone(SP?) shots for nearly 6 years and now is not working any more. She had been taking many types of meds by dr.s and and most of the Dr's tell her the problem can be solve by taking drugs for life or do surgery. She had been to many specialist and doctors in the past and nothing has solve her problem.

Finally after seeing the Dr. and getting treatments for my mom. She is doing alot better and cannot believe how a simple treatments can solve such pain and headaches. I too went to see him couple of months ago and he realigned my atlas vertebrae or is know as atlas orthogonal.

I am not a Dr. or specialist. So you can do your own research and see if this is for you or not.

Here is some info for those of you who want some answers.

well most of my dad's side of the family suffers from them. Mine aren't caused by caffine(sadly) :frown: I don't get them enough to worry or to hate life, but when I do get them I hate life(don't know if that makes sense)

I've treated a few migraine sufferers over the years with a special mouth guard called an NTI. Google it and see if it may help. It's effective against a certain pattern only.
