As someone earlier posted, Steve C is a long time contributor on S2Ki.com and he's always been a bit over the top in his dislike of the NSX.
Having said that, I hope the post above was tongue in cheek.
I owned a 2001 S2K for one year and 10K miles before getting my 2002. I sold my 2001 for $300 less than I paid for it. (Granted times have changed signifcantly as dealers are not dealing on new S2K's and resale values are finally becoming more like other Hondas (which is to say still good by domestic standards but there is depreciation)).
When I bought my 2002, I came very close to buying a 1994 NSX. I honestly think the NSX is the better car (as it should be for the premium charged for a new one) that is undeniabely quicker, faster and more comfortable. It's not necessariily more fun to drive (IMO) as it has certain charms the S lacks. At the same time the S really is something to drive (at least with the top down) given its unbelievably stiff chassis (for a 'vert), super responsive handling, amazing gearbox, and motorcycle like drivetrain. Its all about what you prefer.
Why did I chose to S2K? Frankly, a few reasons.
1) Finding an excellent, low mileage and un-molested 1994 NSX (I narrowed my search to 1994 cars given the improvements to the car but lack of the undesirable (at least to me) Targa top and higher prices of the later cars). Simply put, Honda didn't sell that many in the US and finding a good one isn't as easy as you guys all seem to think. Sure, this board allowed me to meet a lot of people, see gang of 93 and 94 cars and even test drive a few but most of the vehicles I found weren't what I was looking for or where located in Florida or someplace not exactly convenient when I'm in S.CA.
2) Financing. Given today's super low interest rate environment, I elected to conserve cash for a rental home and finance my car. I couldn't get as comfortable financing a (then) 8 year old car that was out of warranty as I could a brand new car with warranty. That's just me.
3) Maintenance. Before you jump all over me, let me say this. I agree that the NSX is an amazingly well built car. I also believe that it is leaps and bounds beyond what F cars and P cars are in terms of R&M costs. Finally, I understand that spending roughly $35K (after tax, lic., etc.) on a car means you're going to have to assume a budget for some R&M. But... Personally, I knew that if anything went wrong on the NSX it would cost a lot more to fix than the under warranty S2K. As it should. An as new (now) $90K car is going to cost more to fix than a $33K car.
I don't regret my decision for one minute. My dream garage includes both cars but for me, as a conservative guy... this was the best choice I could make for me.
The good news is that there is no bad decision.
