2013 Detroit Auto Show

Aryton Senna must be definitely tuned-in to the North American International Auto Show from the heavens. The spiritual inspiration to the legendary Mclaren F1 Supercar, the Honda NSX, may after all debut at the Detroit tomorrow.

The Honda NSX has a special place in the automotive history of the world. It was the NSX that convinced the world that supercars don’t have to be impractical with ridiculous ergonomics, extremely high service costs and woeful reliability. The NSX proved that supercars can be practical, comfortable and highly reliable machines when you develop them the right way.

Sadly, because of Honda’s fastidious attention to detail, the NSX’s production cost escalated rapidly making the project economically nonviable after 2005. It has been 7 years since we saw the last Honda NSX rolling off the production line. But we are glad to report that it could soon be back!

This image posted by well known auto journo Asianmartin confirms that Honda is ready to revive the NSX brand at Detroit. However, this time it seems that Acura (Honda’s luxury marquee) is responsible for the NSX project.

If you have seen the Avengers movie, then you definitely have an idea of what to expect under the wrap. Remember the futuristic car Tony Stark drove in the Avengers? That was the concept avatar of the next gen NSX.

Last year, Acura unveiled the 2012 Acura NSX Concept (the precursor to the production model of NSX) at the same venue. There is a very good chance that we could possibly see the unveiling of the production model or a close-to production model this time around as there is no meaning in unveiling the same concept twice in such a huge dedicated booth area.

We do know that the production model of the NSX will have a weight-saving aluminum body and a high revving 3.5L VTEC making more than 450 hp mated to a wet twin-clutch 7-speed transmission. It will be a hybrid with an electric motor driving the rear wheels and 2 independent electric motors spinning the front wheels.
Acura claims that the new NSX will represent the ‘ultimate expression of man-machine synergy’. Stay tuned as we try to find out more!

I have to ask something.... lets just say this is the "production version"... what does that even mean when the car is 3 years away from production? I mean... what are we looking at? they are saying 2016.... so many things will change between now and then, obviously the car is not ready. So if it's not ready, what are we looking at? If it was a production version then why isn't it in production?

If the car makes 450 hp from a 3.5l v6 I will be impressed and want a motor swap.

Turbo if I remember correctly they said the car will be for sale within 3 years. Meaning we might see this car next year or the year after. We dont know as of now. Although highly unlikely but I see the possibility for it being sold as a 2015 model considering they probably started the project sometime between 2010-2011.

The 3 year statement was made a year ago. I would assume that he car will be hitting dealerships in 2 years

2 years means we are still not looking at a "production model". So what are we looking at...

Dave I just asked the Acura reps and Acura will have a double unveiling tomorrow. I have to believe it will be a production version and the car will be released next year. Wouldn't make sense to have production car unveiling two years in advance.

Unless maybe its a convertible??

I guess we will find out soon enough.

According to the guys at Temple, it will be an updated concept, that actually has an interior to see, and is closer to the final, production dimensions. Apparently that is it, no more information forth-coming.

Which is another way of saying, "fark this is harder than we thought it was going to be!"

Then again, let us not forget that our beloved model was changed at the death as well. Perhaps greatness does require a difficult gestation??

I don't think that's true sadlerau. If you remember from last years autoshow they displayed it as "NSX concept" (look at the image below to show you what I mean, notice the display on the wall). If you look at the image that was displayed above they are showing "NSX" only which to me is implying the production model. Not a concept.

Another photo from the side, looks like MUCH improved wheels poking through the cover...

From this angle it looks *truly* exotic when under a cover.

Will watch it live via stream. Hope it's a better feed though.

Excited.

Wheels look much improved.

This was just released:

BREAKING NEWS: Next evolution NSX Concept to debut along with '14 MDX Prototype @ #NAIAS WatchLive 1/15 10:40amEST http://cot.ag/UI8UCI - Acura_Insider via Twitter

So I guess we have to wait until tomorrow to see the pics ?
Is there anyone on the forum that is planning on attending today ?

New wheels are smaller too. I see lots o gap.

That almost looks like 458 Italia wheels. What Time is the acura livestream?

I thought the same. Looks like there's a little twist or some sort of scallop in the spoke. Looks to a bit of wheel gap though (continuing with the existent Honda theme). The live stream:

"Live webcast begins at 10:40 a.m. (EST) Tuesday, January 15, 2013." at acurawebcast.com.

Wingz, just put on a suit, casually walk up and then suddenly pull off the cover. What's the worst that can happen? Security will escort you out. By then your nephew could have snapped some photos and you can sell them to autoblog before the reveal tomorrow. At most it's one night in jail but you'll be an Nsxprime hero.

For those saying it'll be out sooner than the latest possible date that Acura has said, that is wishful thinking. They are realizing how difficult it is to not only match/beat 458 and McLaren performance numbers (that IS their target now, they've bought one of each to test against), but to do it with a hybrid system (which eventually runs dry on a track) and only a V6. They are going to use every last hour they can get on engineering this thing. Remember the LFA took 10 years...
2 years means we are still not looking at a "production model". So what are we looking at...
Think of how Toyota did it with the GT86 and LFA. Unveil a concept to let people know you're working on it. Update it to show progress and that it actually is going to happen. Then come out with the final product.

I second that idea. If it was in NY at the Javit's I would do it!

Am I the only one that finds this progression funny? First you're like "wow that's cool"...then you're like "ok ok not quite as nice but not too bad, I can kinda see it" and finally they deliver a turd compared to the concept and you're like "WTF how is this THAT car?!!!"....
