Does anyone here have info on repair or replacement of a automatic transmisssion? Mine is making a whirring noise and the dealer is not quite sure of the source or the cost to replace or repair.

Thanks,
Jim

I would take it to a different dealer.

Replacement is around $5000 depending on your dealer's labor rates. I agree with nsxtasy - if they don't have any idea what they're doing you should probably take the car elsewhere if possible.

An update...

The dealer does not know the source of the whirring noise. It is coming from the transmission. You can hear it when the car is idling in drive or reverse. It goes away when it's in neutral.

The dealer, Davis Acura - Langhorne, PA, is very well respected (from what I hear online) and specializes in NSXs. I think what they're saying is that there's no way to ascertain the source of the noise unless they were to remove and disassemble the transmission. Apparently that's something that either they don't do, don't want to do, aren't set up to do, or something that is typically not done by Acura dealers. I just don't know yet.

Apparently the cost of a remanufactured auto trans is $4300. They are back ordered from Japan and Davis Acura and Acura HQ in Torrance CA are attempting to establish how long the back order is and when delivery can be expected.

Needless to say, this has put a minor damper on my newfound enthusiasm with my NSX. I am surprised as I would have thought that someone, somewhere in the US would be able to rebuild these trannys.

If anyone else has ideas on rebuilding/remanufacturing, please let me know.

Thanks, Jim

OK that makes sense. You are right Davis is one of the best NSX shops in the country. I expect their relative lack of experience is because so few NSXs have auto transmissions.

I'd bet NO dealer has a lot of experience with rebuilding them because they are so uncommon combined with the low miles on so many NSXs.

But if Davis is up against a wall between not wanting to open it up and possibly run you a huge bill and the fact that replacements are backordered, I'd suggest contacting are Mark Basch @ Basch Acura Service in AZ. I know he's worked on autos trannys, but not sure exactly what he's done on them. E-mail him at [email protected]

Good luck!

Yeah...I did just get it....

I've thought of the 5-speed/6-speed option but I'm guessing that might be a LOT of work. Pedals, linkage, cables, etc...and get this...Awhile ago there was a set of NSX cylinder heads on eBay ($1600). I noticed that the poster said they were for a manual tranny NSX. I wrote him and he confirmed this and said that there are separate part numbers for the heads depending on manual and auto trannies. Wow! That surprised me. I wouldn't have expected that. So, I'm thinking a conversion might be more of a hassle. If anyone's done it, though, I'd be open to hear their experiences.

Thanks for the lead in AZ...I'll drop him a line.

Looks like I'll be driving the Vette for fun for awhile
