I came across an Eclipse AVN 5435 for cheap, and finally decided to taking on the tasks of installing it.

Armed with lots of thread reading and great posts by D'Ecosse and Malibu, I was able to confidently perform this install. It took about 2 days on and off between lunch breaks and beer breaks. Great way to spend a weekend.

This is how the unit looks when working under ipod control (sold separately)

Fair warning to others who attempt this..Make sure EVERYTHING fits perfect, including climate control, ac vents, clocks, glove box etc before painting. OR you'll end up redoing the cutting and bondo to make minor adjustments like I did. DOH!

Here's some pictures of the finished product!

Sorry about the low quality pics..all from my camera phone. Overall I'm happy with the unit. Just the fact that I don't have to get out the car to load CD's in trunk still amazes me.

Hi,

I am thinking about installing the Eclipse AVN5500, but am afraid of the install.

Could you please share some install information?

1. Did you mount your GPS antenna inside the car (on the dash borad)?
2. How did you wire the reverse signal wire?
3. How did you wire the vehicle speed pulse signal wire?

Thanks

SGVNSXRATED ....where did u buy your unit cheap? what was the price? I've been looking but its expensive. was it brand new out the box?.thanks jermaine

I installed the GPS antenna inside the car right where the windshield and dashboard meets. No problems picking up signal what so ever.

I didn't install a back up camera, so no reverse signal wire installed.

The VSP signal wire was tapped into the location behind the glovebox. Easiest location IMO.

Purchased used from a friend who upgraded to a Pioneer z1. He regrets the decision LOL.

Could you please be a little more specific on this? I am really confused as to how to hook this VSP up.

Thanks very much.

Your installation looks excellent. I am going to get one this weekend and install it. Could you please help me w/a question?

How did you route the GPS antenna? Would you have a picture to show us where the GPS antenna is mounted?

Thanks you very much.

Don't have a picture, but i took off the kick panel below the steering columm, i routed the wire from the headunit across toward the left by hood latch then up and across the dash. Then I put the panel back on. No wires can be seen.

I installed the same unit a year ago and the cd changer and a bigger amp plus aftermarket speakers. The nav works great and have had only a couple times when a cd would skip, usually a big bump in the road. I think the nav in the Eclipse is better than the one in my TL. I don't have mp3 player though. I had mounted the antenna back in hatch area up where the gas strut mounts to the hatch frame, I made up a bracket from steel so the antenna's magnet would stick to it. I really like your install. looks great. Good job.

how much of the interior did you take out? The finish on the center console looks oem, did you repaint? what did you use for a tem, plate to cut the opening for the eclipse radio to fit? i plan on install the nav pod for nav and the eclipse jsut as a head unit.

I removed the center console, the glove box,the clock, the climate control and the radio. I used Grey Metallic paint mentioned in another thread. It was pretty much a 95% match. I had to paint the climate control trim also to make it match. I made the hole for the headunit using this method:

http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70850

It was very difficult to get the exact positioning so that the headunit opens up properly, and so that the ashtray opens and closes. Even right now my ashtray slightly touches the bottom of the headunit when i open and close it.

Like I stated before. Make sure everything, I mean everything fits before painting. I would reassemble everything including climate control, and glovebox, and test the fitting.
