Getting an NSX soon!!! More help needed!

(Please see last post down below)

Hello!

I'm looking to buy a 98-00 NSX.
Just put a deposit down on a car and Ill be picking it up in 2 weeks! Woohoo!

I would appreciate any advice people have in purchasing the car...

Specifically,
1) If anyone has a checklist to look for with the car
2) If someone can recommend a mechanic in Chicago to check out the car.
3) I was thinking of buying a car cover - any advice or websites to check out would be appreciated.... also is it okay to keep the car covered most of the week in regards to moisture buildup etc.. (I have a public garage in my apartment complex)
4) Anyone here in the Dallas Fort Worth area?

Thanks!

Also, does it make a difference if you buy 87 vs 91 octane gas?

2) Check the midwest subforum, as this has been discussed frequently. Acura of Brookfield in Wisconsin (West suburb of Milwaukee) is THE place to go in the midwest, but there are a few decent Chicago dealers that can do most NSX service. (Pauly and Davis, IIRC)

3) Get the factory car cover. Check the market section for a used one. Covering the car is fine, but you don't want it to get wet.

4) There are many people from DFW. Check that region's subforum.

In answer to your other question, use 93 or higher only. Not 91, and definitely not 87.

There are two dealers in the Chicago area that have a lot of experience servicing the NSX: Woodfield Acura (847-519-9550) in Hoffman Estates, northwest of the city, and Pauly Acura (847-433-8200) in Highland Park, north of the city. Either one can do an excellent inspection of an NSX for you.

Look in the NSX FAQ (answers to Frequently Asked Questions). Just click on the word FAQ in the red bar at the top of your screen, the one that looks like this:

Click on Accessories - Car Covers and Nose Masks.

You can also do a search on these forums, as it has been discussed in numerous previous topics.

In the owner's manual, Honda recommends gas of 91 octane or higher. If you use regular gasoline (87 octane), the car's electronics will adjust so the car won't be harmed, but performance will be degraded.

I recommend you use premium gasoline, whatever octane that is in your area. (Around here, that's 93; in the West, it's 91.)

Davis Acura is in Pennsylvania, which is a bit further than Woodfield Acura or Pauly Acura. :D

Yes, I was waiting for you to find this thread . . .

Good thing I said IIRC, or I would have been so owned I could have never shown my face again at NSX events . . .

Im a fan of the acura factory car cover. I get mine wet and keep it on my car for extended periods of time and my cover and my car are always okay. Just dont take the cover off if its frozen to your car, let it thaw...

Thanks for all the help guys...have a couple more questions...

I've done some more research into the car that I am considering purchasing and have put a deposit on... (2000 NSX-T silverstone)

I believe it was a leased vehicle and according to an insepction report, it has been reported to have the following problems:

F Valance - loose (What is an F valance and what does that mean???)
scratches on 3 wheels
small chips and scratches and dents on... bumper, hood, left door, spoiler

What do you guys think about this?
Any suggestions and help is very much appreciated.

Thanks!
-Will

A valance is the lowermost piece visible on the outside of the front end or the rear end. F valance would be the front valance. It's not clear whether it's talking about the 2-inch thick black chin spoiler, or the painted air dam above it; I'm betting it's the former. It's common for the chin spoiler to be loose, since that's what scrapes on some driveways etc; it's mounted with about 20 (?) screws and you can easily tighten it up. If it's damaged, a new one costs just over $100 but as long as it's in good condition, this is a minor issue. Just get some of the screws if any are missing, and you're all set.

It's hard to evaluate without seeing it in person. Sometimes photos give an idea of the damage, but not always; they're particularly difficult to see in photos of painted body parts (and silver doesn't make it any easier). Wheel scratches are usually easier to see in photos. Minor scratches are typical; however, gouges - often caused by "curbing" (getting the outer lip of the wheel really scraped to he**) are really ugly, to the extent that you might want to get them repaired (typical wheel repair costs are $100-200 per wheel). Small chips on the front bumper are common, particularly when mileage is fairly high. Dents can be anything from a "door ding", which can often be fixed inexpensively by a paintless dent repair specialist, to something that would require expensive body work to repair.

All in all, I wouldn't give up on the car for this reason, but I would want either (a) evidence that these items are really minor (again, photos would help, or maybe you can discuss them with the person who did the inspection), or (b) a second inspection by a reputable body shop (preferably one with NSX experience) who can evaluate these flaws and give you a better idea of how serious they are and what it would cost to fix them (not that you would, depending on what they are, but that will help you judge their severity).

If you're looking for a body shop in the Chicago area with NSX experience to look it over for you... Schaumburg Auto Body is in Schaumburg, not too far from Woodfield Acura, and has NSX experience; Highland Park Honda has its own body shop, is close to Pauly Acura, doesn't have NSX experience, but is very competent and could give you a good idea of the car's condition; Acura of Libertyville has its own body shop, but is further north from Pauly Acura; and The Last Detail, in North Chicago is the best, most perfectionist, and most expensive body shop in the area. But I would see if you could just talk with the person who did the inspection to find out more about how serious the problems are. They might be very minor, or they might not (as you can probably tell from these comments).
