optional NSXPO HPDE Event Registration Now Open

Thanks for clearing that up "SNELL" vs "SA"

Hi all. This is my first time for an HPDE. I've called around for the tech inspection and it ranges from $95-$135. Is this about right?

That seems high to me. Keep looking. Show the mechanic the tech form.

I have had my done for 50 bucks at my local mechanic. It should only take about 30 minutes.

thanks. I did show the tech form. Also, I checked 3 shops. 2 of them were "NSX specialists" listed on nsxprime... :( I'll keep looking...

To further clear things up....This applies to HPDE drivers only.
Snell is the Foundation that rates and classifies helmets according to standards.
SA standard was designed for competitive auto racing. They also recommending replacing your helmet every 5 years. Which is the norm in competitive wheel to wheel racing but not so much in HPDE situations.
http://www.smf.org/helmetfaq#aSAMKdiff

There was some debate on what we we're going to allow for HPDE. Obviously we want everyone to be protected and safe as much as we can ontrack.
As it is, an SA2000 helmet is already 15 years old. Going back any further or allowing M rated helmets we feel would not have been safe for anyone involved.

When it comes to ontrack safety equipment, your first question should always be, whats your life worth to you :)
Sorry for the confusion and misprint.

We are very sorry, there was a misprint in the HPDE introduction e-mail. The requirement is SA 2000 or later.

I'm not sure that makes sense unless you are requiring fireproof suits or roll cages. It's your right to make an arbitrary decision but it doesn't appear to be grounded in safety, according to how Snell describes the differences. http://www.smf.org/helmetfaq#aSAMKdiff

Maybe it's best to say you went with the same standard as nearly all the HPDE events.

The SA standard requires flammability test while the M and K standards do not.
The SA and K standards include a rollbar multi-impact test while the M standard does not.
The five-year replacement recommendation is based on a consensus by both helmet manufacturers and the Snell Foundation. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials. Hair oils, body fluids and cosmetics, as well as normal "wear and tear" all contribute to helmet degradation. Petroleum based products present in cleaners, paints, fuels and other commonly encountered materials may also degrade materials used in many helmets possibly degrading performance. Additionally, experience indicates there will be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a five-year period due to advances in materials, designs, production methods and the standards. Thus, the recommendation for five-year helmet replacement is a judgment call stemming from a prudent safety philosophy.

All decisions we made were grounded with safety in mind by us...when you are the HPDE Director of the event, deal with Track regulations, Insurance regulations, etc, etc, etc, then you can make the decisions.

Yes, that was my point. HPDE events, at least in my limited experience, do not otherwise require fireproof equipment and do not require roll cages. So both advantages of SA-rated helmets are largely irrelevant. I suppose you could say that some fireproof is better than none and I would agree. I just find it funny to say that an M helmet would not be safe.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, just being sassy. You came to the same place I indicated: that it's your choice and you don't need to explain it. I intended no ill will. I should have included emoji of some sort.

Correct. Sorry to intrude on your day. I'd make the same decision as you I just wouldn't have tried to justify it the same way. Hopefully nobody at the event ends up needing their helmet for any of its protective qualities.

No worries, have a nice day.

Check with me the morning of the event.

I totally missed this, feel so bummed. Please add me to the wait list if there will ever be a spot opens up. Thanks.

Would like to clarify arrival times for ALL HPDE Drivers and Instructors that are also driving their personal cars on track so there is no confusion.

We would like all the above to be at the track no later than 6:15 am, 6:00am would even be better.

The reason for this is we have a lot of cars that will be entering Thermal on the track day, 150+, between the HPDE and the Social event attendee's. We need to have all of the HPDE drivers staged and parked in their reserved area before the general attendee's start arriving at the facility at 6:30am. Because of the limited entry way and where HPDE drivers will need to park for quick track access, it will cause traffic backup if HPDE drivers have to stop and back up into they're spots while others are trying to enter the facility and be directed to they're parking area's. The idea is to have everyone in and parked by no later than 7:15am so everyone has a chance to settle end before the EVERYBODY must attend drivers meeting at 7:30 am. The drivers meeting includes AutoX and Skidpad drivers as well.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation on this matter, and get ready for a fun and exciting day on track !
I look forward to seeing you all out there !

If anyone that is in the Novice class would like to change their minds, I don't mind taking up your spot.

Most of you have already seen this...but wanted to post the schedule for the HPDE event since there has been a couple of small revisions and I wanted to make it clearer when the classroom session are being held for the Novice Group.
We will have schedule printed out and in your registration track pack when you register/sign in at the Palm Springs Air Museum.
We have the honor of Wei-Shen teaching the classroom. So it's sure to be very interesting and informative.

Does Thermal Raceway allow spectators? What about owners who are registered for NSXPO but not for the track event, can they go to Thermal and be spectators? What about other people not registered for NSXPO?

Only NSXCA members who have paid and are registered for NSXPO 2015 will be permitted at the track. Our entire group will be at the track on Friday not only for the HPDE but also the social activities which include autocross and skid pad driving as well as the chance to win a ride along with Peter Cunningham in THE NEW NSX!

Due to contractual requirements no one may enter the track grounds unless they are a paid and registered NSXPO 2015 attendee.
