Ok you wheel guru's out there, I'm looking at new wheels for my X. What is the difference between wheels that are 17x7.5 ET38 and a 17x8 ET40 and how might they look different once mounted?

A 17x8.0 +40mm will have the edge of the rim be "in" about 5mm from the fender from this pic. A 17x7.5 first of all have the outer edge be "in" 6.35mm with the exact same offset as an 8" rim, due to it being 1/4" narrower on each side. Now factor in 2mm lower offset, and it will bring it back "out" 2mm thus netting 4.35mm furthur "in" than the 17x8.0 +40. NOTE this is ONLY where the rim edge will be.
If you run the same 215 tire, the rim edge doesn't make much of a difference as to where the tire edge will sit. With the same tire, a +40 8"rim and a +38 7.5" rim, will only "look" 2mm different as far as the tire edge goes. The +38 will be "out" 2mm furthur to the fender than the 8" +40mm.
My guideline is to run a 17x8.0 +35mm to put the edge of the tire out to the fender as you can see in this pic.
