What is lo-jack?

Go here:
http://www.lojack.com/

It's basically a beacon transmitter that goes in your car. When your car is stolen, it can be activated by the police by providing them registration information (tag or VIN). It sens out a beacon which can be received by properly equipped patrol cars.

IMHO, this will be put out of business by OnStar, which uses GPS. OnStar is much more accurate in locating a vehicle, and it doesn't require equipment in patrol cars. The OnStar personnel call the police and tell them over the phone in real-time where the vehicle is.

However, if the vehicle can't see any satellites (with OnStar), it won't work properly. So... if you steal a car with OnStar, take it to a parking garage and then disconnect the battery. with LoJack, the system has its own power supply and isn't dependent on any other technology.
